Deadpool & Wolverine is an American superhero comedy film based on the character of the same name. It serves as a sequel to Deadpool 2 and the second season of Loki. It is the thirty-fourth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fourth film of Phase Five. It was directed by Shawn Levy and written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Ryan Reynolds, and Shawn Levy. It was produced by Marvel Studios, Maximum Effort, and 21 Laps Entertainment and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was released on July 26, 2024.
Synopsis[]
Wade Wilson lives a quiet life, having left his time as the mercenary Deadpool behind him, until the Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline, pulls him into a new mission. With his home universe facing an existential threat, Wilson reluctantly joins with an even more reluctant Wolverine on a mission which will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Plot[]
In a flashforward sequence, Deadpool travelled to North Dakota, where he finds Wolverine's grave and digs it up, trying to see if he actually died or not. Much to his disappointment he finds his corpse and cries in anger. The Time Variance Authority minutemen find Deadpool and begin attacking him. After a failed plea, Deadpool kills the minutemen using Wolverine's adamantium bones and skull.
In 2018, Wade Wilson uses Cable's time-travelling device to travel Earth-10005 to Earth-616, where he meets Happy Hogan to discussing about joining the Avengers. He desperately is trying to use his abilities properly, and a place where his life would matter, but Happy declined his offer, citing that his past actions deemed him irresponsible in regards to teamwork, and tells him that that joining the Avengers should not be because he needs it, but because others need him.
Six years later, Wade has retired his superhero life as Deadpool, and he is now working as a failed car salesman at Drive Max with Peter Wisdom. After returning from work, he was surprised to find out that his friends had thrown a surprise birthday party for Wade. It is there that it was revealed that Vanessa Carlysle had broken up with him and she's dating a guy named Dermot.
After hanging out with Dopinder, Blind Al, Peter, Vanessa, Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, Buck, and Shatterstar, he thanks everyone for sticking up for him. Suddenly, the TVA minutemen arrive at Wade's apartment and capture him.
Wade then wakes up from being unconscious, where he meets Mr. Paradox, a TVA agent who was tasked to apprehend Wade and offer him a proper place in the Sacred Timeline with the Avengers. So eager to finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wade breaks the fourth wall by criticizing 20th Century Studios and that he would go to Disneyland. After the TVA provided the brand-new Deadpool suit, Paradox explains his universe was in the brink of dying due to it losing its "anchor", said anchor was none other than Wolverine, who died protecting X-23.
Paradox expressed dissatisfaction and frustration with the current leadership TVA after the events of the second season of Loki, and says that he was planning to speed up the destruction of Wade's universe using the Time Ripper.
Horrified by what was just said, knowing that he would lose his entire world, Deadpool takes matters on his own hands and steals Paradox's TemPad, and goes off to find Wolverine, with Paradox ordering minutemen to go after him. Traveling across the multiverse, Deadpool finds multiple variants of Wolverine, including: a comic-accurate short Wolverine, the one-eyed Patch, Wolverine in the iconic brown suit where he was seen fighting Hulk briefly, Old Man Logan, a variant which was crucified in a giant X statue, a variant with a glam-rock hair and one arm, a Wolverine variant played by actor Henry Cavill, before eventually going to a universe where he finds a beat-up, tired and drunk Wolverine in a bar.
Deadpool asks Wolverine to come with him to help him out, but Logan was not interested whatsoever. Deadpool then threatens Logan that he would shoot him if he would not comply, with Logan smiling knowing that he would not be killed so easily. As they were about to fight, Logan passes out.
Deadpool then brings the unconscious Wolverine into the TVA headquarters, where Paradox was baffled and tells Deadpool that he was deemed "the worst Wolverine" variant to ever exist, and that this Wolverine failed to save his world and lives in guilt. Deadpool finds out that Paradox was operating without the TVA's authorization and had gone rogue, that's when Wolverine wakes up and Paradox prunes Deadpool and Wolverine into the Void.
Wolverine gets angry at Deadpool and they start fighting each other. They fight for some time until Deadpool pleads and tells Wolverine that if they went back to the TVA, they could change Wolverine's past and prevent the catastrophe that happened to him. Wolverine begrudgingly agrees, before they are stopped by a mysterious cloaked person, in which Deadpool assumed it was Steve Rogers/Captain America, but was later revealed to be Johnny Storm/Human Torch, with a group of scavengers led by Sabretooth and Pyro. Pyro depowers Human Torch and all three get captured, and bring them to their base which was the giant corpse of an Ant-Man variant.
Deadpool and Wolverine are introduced to Cassandra Nova, the evil twin sister of Professor X, who was banished to the Void by the TVA, much to her satisfaction. Johnny keeps insulting Cassandra, in which she kills him by skinning his entire body using her telekinesis.
Cassandra then incapacitates Wolverine by burying him to the ground, and then forcefully hijacks Deadpool's mind. She manipulates his memories with Vanessa, where she was says that he will always be a nobody. After Deadpool and Wolverine recover from her powers, they try to attack her, but Cassandra effortlessly brushes them off to get eaten by Alioth, but they managed to escape.
After escaping, they decide to find the Resistance that Human Torch told them earlier and to get out of the Void, while walking Deadpool keeps annoyingly asking Wolverine about his suit and why he's wearing it. On their way, they meet two Deadpool variants: Dogpool and her owner Nicepool. Despite Deadpool's jealousy of Nicepool, the latter gives them directions to the Resistance base and provides them a car to get there.
While driving, Deadpool accidentally slips up that he wasn't certain that the TVA would fix Wolverine's world and it was merely an "educated wish". Wolverine is enraged at Deadpool and lashes out, leading to what felt like a never-ending fight inside the car, and that it actually lasted a whole day.
Both being exhausted, a person finds their car and drives them to the Resistance hideout. There they find variants of Elektra Natchios, Blade, Gambit, and X-23, who had been banished to the Void by the TVA. Deadpool convinces the Resistance to join them and take down Cassandra and avenge Johnny's death, while leaving out the reason why he died. Wolverine tells them that their plan is doomed to fail, and refuses to join them.
Later that night, X-23 talks to Wolverine, where he admitted that in his universe, he abandoned his fellow X-Men, which resulted in them being killed by the anti-mutant vigilantes, much to his horror and despair, so he keeps wearing the X-Man suit since then. Laura tells Logan that regardless of what he did, and what he felt, he's a good person at heart and always will be.
Pyro follows Deadpool and Wolverine's tracks and contacts Paradox, telling him to strike a deal with him and says that Cassandra is too dangerous and must be eliminated. The Resistance plan to steal Juggernaut's helmet so they could neutralize Cassandra's abilities. Deadpool, Elektra, Blade, Gambit, and X-23 drive up the Ant-Man base, where they were ready to face off.
Much to their surprise, Wolverine tagged along and decided to help the team out. Cassandra knocks out Deadpool and subdues Wolverine, taking over his mind and urges Logan to give in to his berserker rage and primal instincts. However, Wolverine snaps out of Nova's powers and Deadpool puts Juggernaut's helmet over her head that was provided by X-23.
Suddenly, Pyro comes in and shot Cassandra in the chest, and Wolverine tells Deadpool to take off the helmet so they can save her, claiming that Charles Xavier would never want to see his sister die. Deadpool finally obliges and lets go of the helmet. Cassandra eases off and uses a Sling Ring that she acquired from a Doctor Strange variant and opens up a portal for Deadpool and Wolverine to escape the Void, but tells them to hurry before Alioth comes.
Cassandra then forces Pyro to admit that he was working with Paradox behind her back and that he tried to kill her, despite them making a prior arrangement. Deadpool and Wolverine make it to Earth-10005, where Paradox finishes preparing the Time Ripper, and Nova follows suit.
Cassandra then briefly incapacitates Paradox, letting Deadpool and Wolverine know that she was planning to use the Time Ripper to destroy every single universe that exists and only let the Void be its sole land, because she had grown accustomed to it. She then opens up a portal where Pyro comes in to warn Paradox, but not before Cassandra kills him and flung him back to the Void. She captures Paradox and goes to the TVA headquarters.
Then the Deadpool Corps arrive through the portal consisting of multiple Deadpool variants including: Dogpool, Nicepool, Lady Deadpool, Cowboypool, Headpool, Kidpool, Babypool, Roninpool, Deadpool 2099, Canadapool, Welshpool, Scottishpool, Samurai Deadpool, Golden Age Deadpool, Chinese Deadpool, and Iron Deadpool.
Nicepool talks to Deadpool that he wants Dogpool back, with Deadpool not really liking him. The Deadpool Corps start attacking and shoot Nicepool multiple times in the back, while Deadpool uses him as a human shield. Deadpool asks Nicepool how long does he have time to regenerate, in which we he then finds out that he was the only Deadpool variant who does not regenerate and then bleeds out. Deadpool then assures Nicepool that everything will be okay, before Nicepool's brains being blown to bits, and Wolverine blaming Deadpool for his idiotic behavior.
Deadpool and Wolverine then agreed to team-up and take on the Deadpool Corps, with Wolverine donning his cowl and Deadpool delivering his well known catchphrase "Maximum Effort". They fight through the hordes of Deadpool variants, who keep coming back due to their regeneration, however, they all cease fighting once they see Peter who was dressed up with Deadpool's old suit, was deeply loved by all Deadpools.
With all the variants being distracted, Deadpool and Wolverine head to the TVA headquarters to stop Cassandra. They meet up with Paradox, who tells them that Cassandra had already taken control of the Time Ripper, and is preparing to unravel the entire Multiverse. The only way to stop her was to short-circuit the chambers of matter and anti-matter that powers the device, however, it was but guaranteed that the power was too great and that it could potentially kill them even with their regeneration abilities.
Wolverine volunteers to sacrifice himself, claiming that he was nothing left for himself anymore, and that Deadpool deserves to life a happy, normal life with his friends and loved ones. Just as Wolverine was about to enter the chambers, Deadpool briefly attacks him and locks him out of the bunker, and prepares to sacrifice himself instead.
Despite Logan's protests, Deadpool decided to do this himself and protect his loved ones and to make his efforts matter. Wolverine persists and breaks open and connects the chamber with him. The Time Ripper gets destroyed and Cassandra Nova dies from the explosion.
Hunter B-15 and the TVA agents investigate the incident, Paradox tells them that Cassandra was solely responsible while mourning the "deaths" of Deadpool and Wolverine. However they managed to survive by sharing the energy burst they had with each other.
Paradox gets arrested, and Deadpool asks B-15 to do good by the Resistance who were still in the Void and to help them save their universes, and also fix Wolverine's reality. B-15 promises to consider the former but notes that Wolverine's unfortunate circumstances were what led him to save the Multiverse.
Wade and Logan then head together to eat shawarma, which Wade jokes how the Avengers had eaten shawarma together. They get reunited with Dogpool, now that Nicepool got killed in the battle. Wade takes both of them to his place with Blind Al, inviting their friends and X-23 to hang out together, and Wilson rekindles his relationship with Vanessa.
In the post-credits scene, Deadpool is at the TVA looking over at footage of Human Torch actually cursing out Cassandra Nova, proving that he did not lie or set him up to be killed.

On December 27, 2019, Ryan Reynolds confirmed to Variety that a third Deadpool film was in the works at Marvel Studios.[1]
On November 20, 2020, Deadline reported that a third film in the Deadpool franchise is officially in the works.[2]
On January 11, 2021, in an interview with Collider, Kevin Feige confirmed that the film will be rated-R and a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[3]

Reception[]
On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 78% of 402 critics gave the film a positive review and an average rating of 7/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Ryan Reynolds makes himself at home in the MCU with acerbic wit while Hugh Jackman provides an Adamantium backbone to proceedings in Deadpool & Wolverine, an irreverent romp with a surprising soft spot for a bygone era of superhero movies." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 56 out of 100 based on 58 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale, while those surveyed by PostTrak gave the film a 96% overall positive score (an average of 5 out of 5 stars), with 85% saying they would definitely recommend it.

- On July 2, 2020, Morena Baccarin, who played Vanessa Carlysle in the previous two films, stated to Entertainment Weekly that she did not know how big her role would be in the third installment, but she knew that the film was already being written and was expecting being approached about it, saying that she wanted her role to be as big as possible.[28]
- This is the fourth film in the MCU to feature Marvel characters from universes outside of the MCU, the first being Spider-Man: No Way Home, followed by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels.
- The film ties in with Loki, as it features Alioth and the Time Variance Authority.

- This is the third film in the Multiverse Saga to feature multiple variants of one character, following Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
- Chris Evans returns to the MCU, reprising his role as Johnny Storm/Human Torch from the Fantastic Four. duology from 2005 to 2007. This is the first time Evans has returned to the MCU since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, which marked the final appearance of him portraying Steve Rogers in chronological order.
- This is the third time Nathan Fillion is in an MCU movie after Guardians of the Galaxy, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He was meant to play Wonder Man in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but it was cut (he did voice Wonder Man in M.O.D.O.K.). Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Wonder Man in the series. Also, this is the first time Nathan Fillion is in an MCU film without any involvement with James Gunn.
- This is the third time Disney or Disneyland have been mentioned. Iron Man previously mentioned Disney, Howard Stark is an expy of Walt Disney himself, and in Black Panther, Shuri suggested T'Challa they go to Disneyland.
- Tom Holland's younger brother Harry Holland made a cameo as one of the Deadpool variants.[30] This is the second time he had a cameo in a Marvel film, following Spider-Man: No Way Home, which starred his older brother, Tom. Harry's scenes were shown in the "More Stuff" edition.
- Henry Cavill immediately agreed to appear in the film when Shawn Levy asked him to, and it was Ryan Reynolds who named him Cavillrine.[31]
- The film currently holds the record of the most number of times the F-bomb was dropped, with a total of 116 times, while also having the most number of variants for one character, with there being at least 100 variants of Deadpool.
- Robert Downey Jr. was originally supposed to make a cameo as Tony Stark, but he declined due to him being cast as Doctor Doom.[32]
- This is the first R-rated Disney film to make a billion dollars at the box office.
- This is the first MCU movie to use the exact same Marvel Studios logo that the 3D version uses, the 3D version has Captain America's Shield flying out of the logo. But here, after it flies out, Deadpool can be seen getting up as if he were dodging it.

- Nicepool is credited as being portrayed by Gordon Reynolds instead of Ryan Reynolds. This is referencing a sketch Ryan uploaded in 2021, where he was interviewed by a twin brother named Gordon Reynolds.
- There was going to be a female variant of Juggernaut, but the character did not make it into the final film.[34]
- The film features Kidpool, making it the second MCU project that includes a kid variant of a character. The first project to include this was Loki, which featured Kid Loki.
- Rob McElhenney filmed his cameo as the TVA agent who gets killed by Alioth, but it was cut. The scene was shown in the trailer. If you look closely, when Deadpool Wolverine and Human Torch are in the convoy, there's a handcuffed figure. This is supposed to be Rob's cameo. Ryan Reynolds confirmed the TVA agent who got pruned by Deadpool in the opening credits was Rob McElhenney.
- A kissing scene between Hunter B-15 and Peter was deleted from the final film.[35]
- This is the first time in cinematic history where Deadpool is referred as "The Merc with a Mouth", like in the comics. Not counting the Deadpool rap song from the first movie, with this lyric: "Merc with a Mouth, I can't die One foot in the grave, but I'm still alive".

- Deadpool calls Wolverine “Peanut" throughout the movie, referencing Cassie Lang's nickname.
- The scene of Wolverine trying to fight Deadpool and Deadpool dodging the punches is the same fight sequence as Peter Parker avoiding Flash Thompson punches in Spider-Man (2002).
- When Wolverine stabs Deadpool in the chest, if you look close to the left, there's a Secret Wars comic book lying on the ground, the inspiration for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars.
- Various former MCU heroes appear through archival footage, such as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Bruce Banner/Hulk, and Thor Odinson. These shots are taken from past Marvel films, specifically Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, and Avengers: Endgame.
- Cassandra Nova's base is the body and skull of Ant-Man, which was later confirmed as the body of Scott Lang, when Deadpool making a joke about Paul Rudd.
- Happy Hogan appears and the date reveals to be March 14, 2018, which is before the snap which took place in May 2018. The Avengers would still be spread out across the world, following the events of Civil War, two years earlier. Both Scott Lang and Clint Barton would still be under house arrest, Wanda Maximoff and Vision would still be in Europe, and Steve Rogers, Natasha Romonoff and Sam Wilson would still be fugitives from the law.
- There are three nods to Ryan Reynolds' wife Blake Lively:
- At the beginning, Deadpool mentions Gossip Girl, which stars Blake Lively.
- After escaping Cassandra Nova's base, Deadpool says "I'm telling Blake!"
- Nicepool mentions that Ladypool recently had a baby, referencing Ryan and Blake having a new baby back in February, 2023. The baby was Olin Reynolds who plays Babypool.
- In Happy (or Tony Stark's) office, there are several items from past MCU films:
- The Forbes magazine which featured Pepper Potts from Iron Man 3 is behind Happy.
- The Prototype Captain America's Shield from Iron Man 2.
- Tony's Iron Man Mark II helmet, before it was painted red and gold.
- Tony's original arc reactor which Pepper framed, which said "PROOF THAT TONY STARK HAS A HEART". This would eventually be used five years later in the timeline, during Iron Man's funeral at his and Pepper's lake house, which was shown in Avengers: Endgame.
- Captain America trading cards are behind Happy, which look like the ones that Nick Fury took from Phil Coulson's locker following his death in The Avengers.
- Tony's mark V suitcase suit from Iron Man 2 is seen on the floor.
- There is a poster for the 1974 Stark Expo which Howard Stark promoted like Walt Disney in archival footage in Iron Man 2.
- On the shelf, Tony's picture with Peter Parker from Avengers: Endgame is seen, but Peter is blocked by the same toy Iron Man helmet that young Peter Parker wore in Iron Man 2. This isn't because of Doctor Strange's spell from Spider-Man: No Way Home, due to this scene taking place in 2018. It is because of Sony owning the rights to Spider-Man and Disney did not ask permission from Sony to use Spider-Man in the film.
- Wade suiting up for work, parallels him suiting up as Deadpool later in the film when he arrives at the TVA.
- There are several Easter eggs in the Void:
- There is a buried 20th Century Fox (the former name of 20th Century Studios) statue. This could be a nod due to the fact that Disney bought Fox back in 2020 and the studio changed its name.
- Buried in the sand, Thor's helmet is seen.
- Captain America's USO shield.
- A corpse of a Chitauri leviathan from The Avengers.
- Red Skull's car from The First Avenger.
- A S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.
- Star-Lord's ship from Guardians of the Galaxy.
- The Q-ship from Avengers: Infinity War.
- In the Resistance hide out, a stone carving of Scarlet Witch from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness can be seen.
- Cassandra Nova's throne in her headquarters is the same one Thanos had when he spoke to Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War. This means that Cassandra killed a variant of Thanos during an infinity war from another universe, which got pruned to the Void. This also happens to be at least around the same time Cassandra killed a variant of Doctor Strange as she mentioned having worn his skin around for a few days, and already having the time stone and reality stones.
- Cassandra is also seen using Charles Xavier/Professor X's chair, meaning she must have killed him.
- The Resistance mentions a deceased Quicksilver, but it is unknown exactly if it is Aaron Taylor-Johnson from the MCU or Evan Peters from the X-Men franchise that got killed. However, it is more likely that it is Evan Peter's Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver since the dead characters that are mentioned, seem to be all from the Fox franchise.
- Blind Al asks Wade if he wants to build a snowman, referencing the Frozen song with the same name.
- Also it's a callback to the second movie, where Wade notices "Do you wanna build a Snowman?" sounds just like "Papa, can you hear me?" from Yentl.
- The way Wade says "I....am... Marvel Jesus", is the same pace Tony Stark said "I...am....Iron Man" in Avengers: Endgame.
- Human Torch's jumping down from a great height and the landing, is the same one Angel Dust did in the first Deadpool film.
- Deadpool says "I am Marvel Jesus, you dull creature" to a Hulk variant, which is a reference to the first Avengers film, when Loki Laufeyson said "I am a God you dull creature", to the Hulk. Both characters get knocked out by Hulk as a response.
- Deadpool says Chris Evans' Human Torch is not his favorite Chris, Breaking the Fourth Wall and referencing Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth.
- During the car fight, when Wolverine is banging Deadpool's head on the radio, "The Greatest Show" from The Greatest Showman plays for a brief second, and features Hugh Jackman singing.
- Deadpool says Wolverine can do musicals, referencing Hugh Jackman's movie The Greatest Showman, which also starred fellow MCU star, Zendaya.
- Deadpool refers to Nicepool as "Van Milder" which is a reference to Ryan Reynolds' movie called Van Wilder, which had a school like Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and a bulldog named Colossus sharing the same name as Colossus in the X-Men film franchise and comics, after Deadpool calls Nicepool "Van Milder" Nicepool looks directly at the camera, breaking the fourth wall, referencing The Proposal, where Ryan Reynolds played the male lead.
- During Deadpool and Wolverine's fight with the Deadpool Corps, a bus ad features a cameo appearance by the late Stan Lee for "Stanlee Steamer" (parody of Stanley Steemer), the catchphrase "your friendly neighborhood cleaner" (a reference to one of the catchphrases of Spider-Man) and his birth year of 1922. Archive footage of Stan Lee also appears during the credits of the film in a proper send-off to 20th Century Studios' X-Men film series.
- Deadpool says "On your left, baby girl" which is a reference to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when Steve Rogers said this to Sam Wilson as they were running in Washington DC, and also a reference to Avengers: Endgame, when Sam made a callback to that running scene by saying "On your left" to Steve during the battle of earth.
- Vanessa tells Wade that his crazy matches her crazy, which is the same thing he told her when he proposed to her in back in the first Deadpool movie.
- The giant dead corpse of Ant-Man (a.k.a. Giant-Man when he's giant) is a reference to the Old Man Logan comics, where a dead Ant-Man corpse was lying down on a highway. Only it was Hank Pym in the comics who was the dead Ant-Man corpse, not Scott Lang, like in the film.
