In 1995, DC enters into an exclusive contract with Diamond Comic Distributors to oversee the distribution of their comics to the direct market. Image, Dark Horse and Valiant Comics follow the same year. Marvel Comics, after filing for bankrupcy in 1996, strikes a deal with Diamond in 1997, giving Diamond such a large share of the market that they essentially hold the monopoly on comics distribution in the United States. This monopoly would last until 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic lead to a brief halt in distribution and forced DC and Marvel to look for other channels.
