Nectar is a sugary fluid made by flowering plants. Primarily meant to attract pollinators, nectar is often stored deep in the middle of the flower, under the petals and just below the stamins, the stalks that contain the pollen of the plant. Nectar serves as a source of food for many animals and, along with honeydew, is the raw material from which bees produce honey.
Nectar secretion increases as the flower is visited by pollinators. Pollination occurs when pollen gets caught on a pollinator that drinks nectar and is then carried by that animal to another flower, bringing together different pollen genetic material. These pollinators are primarily insects such as bees, but hummingbirds and some bat species can also pollinate plants. After pollination, the nectar is frequently reabsorbed into the plant. The amount of nectar in flowers at any given time is variable due to many factors, including flower age, plant location, and habitat management.
