A love letter is an expression of love in written form. However delivered, the letter may be anything from a short and simple message of love to a lengthy explanation and description of feelings. A love letter has no specific form, length, or writing medium; the sentiments communicated, and how, determine whether a letter is a love letter or not. The range of emotions expressed can span from adulation to obsession, and include devotion, disappointment, grief and indignation, self-confidence, ambition, impatience, self-reproach and resignation.
After the end of a relationship, returning love letters to the senders or burning them can be a release to their recipient, or intended to hurt their author. In the past, return could also be a matter of honour, as a love letter, particularly from a lady, could be compromising or embarrassing, to the point where the use of "compromising letters... for blackmailing or other purposes" became a Victorian cliché.
While scented stationery for love letters is commercially available, some writers prefer to use their own perfumes to trigger emotions specifically associated with being with them.

Trivia[]
- One of Maika's hobbies on the Grimoire Public High School is secretly sending love letters from people who didn't have the courage to deliver their love letters themselves to their lovers. According to her future dreams in Chapter 80, Maika even wants to develop an app that would send out e-versions of love letters that where otherwise undeliverable. As revealed in Maika's omake, after her consciousness was sent back to the normal world in Chapter 80, the idea to this app became a realistic project in development, when it turned out that Maika's boyfriend is a very skilled computer programmer.
- Papi once attempted to write a letter to Kimihito, but her poor literacy rate and struggles with gripping a pencil meant that she had to ask for help from Lala. The end result was a letter that - while worded correctly - sounded nothing like what Papi would write.[1]
