"Greetings from my world! The world of the pigs! I am a pig."
Leonard, The Angry Birds Movie
This article is about the group. For other uses, see Bad Piggies.

The Bad Piggies (also known as Pigs or Green Pigs) are the main antagonists of the Angry Birds series and the main protagonists of the 2012 spin-off series with the same name. They are the rivals of The Flock, who plan on stealing their three unhatched eggs, desiring to cook them and feed them to their king. In order to prevent the Birds from taking back their eggs, the King Pig commands his army of pigs to construct many buildings and structures to keep the birds from reaching him.

All of the pigs are green in color and come in several variations. First, there is the basic Minion Pig that comes in three sizes, small, medium, and large. There is a militaristic pig that wears a helmet, referred to as Corporal Pig, the second in command pig with a mustache called the Foreman Pig, and finally, the final boss, the King Pig.

Starting from the fourth episode, The Big Setup, the pigs will begin to wear different hats and/or accessories, including hard hats, pumpkin hats, pumpkins, ghost sheets, winter gear, Christmas hats, cowboy hats, sombreros, and bows. Despite these hats being placed on the pigs, the pigs still remain the same species, as they can be hit without the hat being destroyed, or vice versa.

Every pig knocked down in the game awards 5000 points as shown, but slightly more (40+) on the score counter, and 100+ if the accessory it is wearing is also destroyed in the process if any is present.

They are only playable characters in the King Pig Level in the original Angry Birds, certain Pig Days levels in Angry Birds Seasons and in the Frenemies, Enter The Volcano, The Frozen Heart and Birdnapped episodes in Angry Birds Reloaded.

On September 27, 2012, Rovio released a new game featuring the pigs.

Personality

As stated by Rovio, the pigs have very little intelligence, easily mistaking a bubble for an egg.[1] The pigs usually are focused on the topic of food and eating. However, their building skills show improvement as the game progresses.

History

Past

The Pigs have been on Piggy Island since ancient times. The games and extended media seem to imply that Pig society has gone through many drastic shifts over its history. Piglantis and El Porkado were the oldest known Pig civilizations on Piggy Island, with El Porkado still housing Ancestors to modern Pigs in the present. At some point, a collection ancient Piggy laws were written to govern how pig society would function.

While ancient Pig law governed that the King Pig, the largest capable pig on the island, should eat eggs, there was a period in time where the Birds and Pigs lived in peace. The old nesting burrows found outside of Pig City are proof that there was a short period of peace between the species. This time period is depicted in the Moon Festival Comic, where we see a presumed ancestor of Chuck find a job within Pig City, and is very well liked by the King who, while still gluttonous, shows no sign of wanting to eat eggs. Also unlike his successors, the King Pig of this time period seems to genuinely care about his subjects, and even starts to miss them when he's sent to a paradise on the moon.

This time of tranquility eventually ended, and by the Ham'o'ween Comic, the two parties are back in conflict. After the fight for the eggs is rekindled, certain offshoots of Pig society begin cropping up. A group of Pigs fail a submarine launch so spectacularly that it sends them into space. This group's descendants would eventually form into the Space Pigs.

While Pirate Pigs have sailed the world as far back as Angry Birds: Treasure Island's Long John Smooth Cheeks and his pirate crew, there was no indication that Pirate Pigs have split from the Piggy Kingdom until recently. At some point before the events of the first game, but while King Smooth Cheeks was in power, a contingency of Pig pirates founded Portuga, a port city entirely independent and resentful of the Pig monarchy.

Present

The current King of Pig City is King Smooth Cheeks. Despite how obliviously he lives, his kingdom seems to be crumbling around him. Contingencies of pigs are beginning to split off, such as the previously mentioned Portuga, or the group of Pigs banished to the Golden Island, and even members of his own government are plotting to overthrow him (namely Chef Pig). The King isn't popular with his subjects either, with almost all of them living in squaller and only being either too stupid or too afraid to stop following orders.

The King's only hope to cement his legitimacy is to steal and eat the last three remaining eggs on Piggy Island. Unfortunately for the king, these eggs are under the protection and supervision of the island's Current flock of birds, and they are willing to go to as extreme lengths to protect them as the Pigs are to steal them. Thankfully for King Smooth Cheeks, he essentially has infinite solders and resources to carry out his diabolical egg-snatching plans. To this day, the current monarch of Pig City is in a fierce conflict with the flock over the three remaining eggs.

Trivia

  • Interestingly, there are pig hoof-prints on the ground during the cutscenes and the cinematic trailer when the pigs steal the eggs,[2] even though they have no hooves, let alone any legs. Very rarely, but not in the game, players can see a pig hand, hanging in mid-air. They can see it in the cinematic trailer when King Pig holds knives and forks in the air imagining himself having the eggs.
  • The pigs were first redesigned in Angry Birds Chrome.
  • In Angry Birds Space, they show more complex emotions and expressions. For example, if a Bird is about to hit a pig, it will have a scared expression. If the bird fails to defeat it, the pig will sigh in relief or giggle. If the bird successfully defeats it, the pig will be heard grunting or squealing. Furthermore, the pigs will snore and pretend to fall asleep in an attempt to taunt the player.
    • In the World and Level selection screens in Angry Birds Space, pigs inside bubbles can be tapped, which pops the bubble, freezing the pig, causing it to explode. This has no particular benefit, but rather, is meant to provide comic relief.
  • Angry Birds Space is the first mobile app version of Angry Birds in which the Pigs are given the Google Chrome Design, instead of the normal design shown in mobile versions of Angry Birds Games.
  • According to The World of Angry Birds Official Guide, the pigs are terrified of Terence, and even light Jack-O-Lanterns to try to ward him off (unsuccessfully).
  • In Angry Birds Toons, many of the pigs' snorts were provided by actual pigs.[citation needed]
  • According to Rovio, the real reason why all of the villains of this game are portrayed as pigs is that while the game was still in development, several reports concerning the outbreak of the swine flu epidemic started to show up in various news media. Hence, they ended up making the villains pigs. The swine flu is also the reason why Rovio decided to make the pigs green, since the first signs of the flu were green spots all over the bodies of real-life pigs.[3]
  • The Angry Birds Seasons episode Go Green, Get Lucky is the first episode that uses the Google Chrome Designs of the Pigs in cutscenes, including King Pig.
  • Corporal Pig is the only pig who's plush is shown to be hurt and to have no ears. However, in areas such as Korea, there is an official Corporal Pig plush that still has one crack but he doesn't appear to be injured. It can also be seen in some pictures.
  • In Angry Birds Seasons, the old pig designs still appear.
  • The way the pigs love to eat is a reference to real-life pigs, which are shown to eat anything.
  • The pigs love to eat Tofu Hot-Dogs, ham, sausage and other types of fake meat. This is to prevent cannibalism (this is when species eat the same species' flesh.)
  • It seems that older and bigger pigs have spots, in contrast, Minion Pigs have none (But very rarely).
  • in Angry Birds: Treasure Island, Matilda claims that the first sandwich was invented by the Pigs when Captain Long John Smooth Cheeks and his crew got stranded on Easter Egg Island.
