~ Zeus gets excited after learning about Völundr of the Valkyries, which made Ragnarok that much more interesting.

Zeus is the main antagonist of the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok and the overarching antagonist of its manga spin-off Record of Ragnarok Forbidden Legend - Apocalypse of The Gods.

He is the secondary antagonist of the First Round, the main antagonist of the Second Round, a minor antagonist in the Third Round and a major antagonist in all other Rounds of the Ragnarok Tournament.

Zeus is the King of the Greek Gods, the leader of the Twelve Gods of Olympus, a Chief God and the Chairman of the Gods' Council, as well as the younger brother of Hades, Poseidon and Adamas and the last son of Kronos. He is also the Gods' representative of the Gods Fighters during the Second Round, where he faces Adam as the Humans' representative of the Einherjar.

He is voiced by Wataru Takagi, who has also voiced Obito Uchiha in Naruto, Bellamy and Vander Decken IX in One Piece, Chaka in Black Lagoon, Hammerhead in One Punch Man, Rubeus in Sailor Moon and Tatsumi in Shiki, in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime adaptation. He is voiced by Chris Edgerly in the English dub.

Appearance[]

Zeus has the appearance of a very frail old man, with black eyes and yellow pupils that appear only rarely, especially when Zeus expresses his emotions. He wears a long beard gathered most of the time with an elastic band, and on his chin he has a conspicuous scar caused by his father Kronos. He wears a long white toga and is barefoot. When he inflates his muscles, Zeus takes on a larger and more menacing appearance, and increases in height. However, when he assumes his Adamas form, Zeus compresses his muscles until he becomes all bony and with wrinkled skin.

When he was young, Zeus did not yet have a beard and possessed long blond hair.

Personality[]

When addressing his other Gods, Zeus is exceedingly calm and authoritative, with a formal and knowledgeable demeanor.

His true nature, however, is that of a maniac obsessed with fighting, taking sadistic pleasure in crushing his opponents with all his might. While he admits that swords are cool, he prefers to fight with his fists. His hunger for battles made him feel excited at the possibility of a betrayal by Brunhilde, and allowed Adamas to stage a rebellion, all for the chance of another war. This obsession of his also led him to organize the Apocalypse Tournament solely to dissolve the taboo according to which the Gods must not clash with each other, not caring if Valhalla was destroyed in the meantime or whether the victor can limit the decision-making power of the Gods.

Zeus is likewise an eccentric character, having spontaneous dramatic emotional outbursts, bursting into a dance in front of everyone present before the commencement of the Second Round of the Ragnarok Tournament, and being branded the most despicable God by Hermes. Furthermore, Zeus can be quite proud and arrogant, proclaiming himself to be the "God Father of Cosmos" and boldly asserting that he will annihilate Adam. However, after multiple rounds of Ragnarok, Zeus became more modest, even admitting Humanity's strength. Even before this change, Zeus knew when he had underestimated his opponent, especially among the Gods.

Zeus, like other Gods, holds his own people to a superior and exceedingly high standard, always expecting them to win regardless of the odds and enraged when they lose to Humans. He also has a strong belief in the Greek Pantheon. Despite Poseidon's defeat against Kojiro Sasaki, Heracles will not lose simply because he is not the sort of guy to do so.

Biography[]

Zeus was the youngest of the offspring of Kronos, the brother of Hades, Poseidon and Adamas and Hera's husband. When Zeus creates his final form, Adamas, he names it this way in honor of his brother Adamas, since Poseidon, seeing him in that form, accidentally mistook him for Adamas.

During the Titanomachy Tournament, Zeus manages to defeat and kill his father Kronos, thus becoming the new Leader of the Greek Gods, ruler of Olympus, King of the Universe and Chairman of the Gods' Council. The Primordial Goddess Gaia, not accepting the appointment of Zeus as ruler of the Gods, unleashes a war against the Greek Gods using the Giants. Zeus fights supported by the other Greek Gods, and in the end the war, renamed Gigantomachy, is ultimately won by the Greek Gods, with Zeus managing to defeat all the Giants.

He then learned from Hermes that Adamas, Zeus' older brother, who didn't like Zeus the youngest brother becoming ruler, was plotting to overthrow him using the Titans and Giants, along with the Demon Typhon. Zeus instead of being fearful, he found the idea of a new war exciting and decided to let Adamas do as he please. However, the plot fell apart once Adamas was mortally wounded by Poseidon, and immediately afterwards taken to Helheim by Hermes, at Hades' request, and transformed by Beelzebub into the Cyborg Adamantine.

During the 2000 B.C. Gods' Council, with the majority of the votes, deciding to spare Humanity from destruction but not without punishment which was the destruction of Thebes in which Ares, the Greek God of War, and his army was sent to destroy the city. Zeus intervened during the fight between Ares and Alcides who noted that the latter drank his blood and offering him to become a God and ascend to Godhood. Alcides agreed so long that Gods won't erase Humanity to which Zeus agreed to and Alcides would later become the God of Fortitude Heracles named after Zeus' wife Hera.

At the end of the Gods' Council of the XXI Century, it is decided by the Gods that the Humans must be exterminated, but before Zeus can give the final sentence Brunhilde intervenes and convinces the Gods to give the Humans one last chance to survive through the Ragnarok Tournament. Zeus accept to show Humans the power of the Gods. During a later meeting of the Gods' Council, Zeus shows all the Gods the names of the Gods he has chosen to be the Gods Fighters who would fight in the Ragnarok Tournament representing the Gods against Humanity's fighters, the Einherjar. Many Gods are angry at the absence of their name on the list, but Sun Wukong points out that a name is missing from the list, and Zeus then announces to everyone the Apocalypse Tournament, during which 16 Gods would face each other to obtain the last place in the Gods Fighters.

At the conclusion of the meeting Zeus, Hermes and Ares are approached by Ra-Horakhty, who accuses Zeus of having transformed Valhalla into his amusement park and, after knocking out Ares, prepares to face it. The two are interrupted by Cú Chulainn, who demands the throne of Zeus if he wins the Apocalypse Tournament. Also given Ra's insistence on a further prize for the winner of the Apocalypse Tournament, Zeus decides that the winner will also have the opportunity to insert a new law into the Constitution of Valhalla, and pits Cú Chulainn and Ra against each other in the first match of the Round of 16.

Zeus then, together with Hermes and Ares, attends the various matches of the Apocalypse Tournament in the stands of honor. In the end, it is Zeus himself who takes the last place in the Gods Fighters, planning to fight in the last match. Some time later, as soon as the Ragnarok Tournament begins, Zeus watched the First Round between Lü Bu and Thor, with the latter winning the fight.

After the fight, he would force Shiva to wait due to his excitement to fight and the two supreme Gods prepare to fight, only for Shiva to back down and let Zeus fight instead. As Zeus partake in the Second Round representing the Gods against Adam representing Humans, the father of Humanity much to the surprise of everyone as he couldn't wait any longer. Adam and Zeus begin to battle with Adam who used his Divine Reflection to dodge all of Zeus moves and copy them and strike back. But Zeus decides to transform Adamas states and figuring out Adam's Divine Reflection's weaknesses decides to go for a war of attrition and eventually manages to win the Second Round and kill the opponent, but Zeus acknowledged that if it were a contest of endurance than Adam would have won.

In the infirmary, Zeus witnesses the Third Round where in the end Poseidon is defeated and killed by Kojiro Sasaki, which is why he immediately afterwards prevents Shiva from fighting in the Fourth Round as it is up to a Greek God to avenge Poseidon. Which is why Zeus makes Heracles fight in the Fourth Round, who is however defeated and killed by Jack the Ripper, which upsets Zeus quite a bit. During the Fifth Round, where Shiva defeats and kills Raiden Tameemon, Zeus together with Odin intervenes in the Arena garden and stops a battle between Buddha, Loki, Kojiro Sasaki, Soji Okita, Isami Kondo and the Seven Lucky Gods, inviting them not to fight outside the Arena, and before returning to watch the Tournament fights on the stands he warns Odin that the Ragnarok Tournament is not going as they had planned.

After Shiva warns Zeus that he now considers Humans fantastic, Zeus decides to have Buddha fight in the Sixth Round, earlier than expected, and when Buddha decides to fight for the Humans during the match Zeus sends the Seven Lucky Gods, which merge back into the original Zerofuku, against him. When, during the match, Zerofuku is absorbed by Hajun, who takes his place, Hades reaches the Arena and warns Zeus, Hermes and Ares that Hajun is the Demon Lord of the Sixth Heaven who nearly destroyed Helheim millennia before. After Buddha's victory, to Zeus' great surprise it is Hades who decides to take Buddha's place in the Gods Fighters by fighting in the Seventh Round to avenge Poseidon. In the end however, it is Qin Shi Huang who defeats and kills Hades during the match, which depresses Zeus.

After the Eighth Round, won by Beelzebub defeating and killing Nikola Tesla, Zeus decides to deploy Apollo in the Ninth Round, which ultimately succeeds to win by defeating and killing Leonidas. After this, Zeus directs a meeting between all the remaining Gods Fighters in which it is decided to quickly obtain the last two victories that the Gods need to win the Ragnarok Tournament. Anubis offers to fight in the Tenth Round, but is overtaken by Susano'o no Mikoto who decides to fight in the Tenth Round, although Susano'o was ultimately defeated and killed by his opponent, Soji Okita, bringing the score back to a tie at 5-5.

Powers and Abilities[]

I really want to hear the sounds your bones make when I grind them to dust, see~
~ Zeus to Adam during the Second Round.

Divine Physiology: Being a Supreme God of Greek Pantheon, Zeus possesses unfathomable amounts of physical power, likely being the most powerful God in existence. He was able to defeat his father Kronos, the personification of time, and wields the power to wipe out Human civilization from the face of the Earth. As a God, Zeus possesses physical abilities far beyond those of any ordinary Human, is unable to die of old age (he's older than the Big Bang) and his body cannot be harmed by deadly weapons. However, he can be injured and killed by physical attacks with superhuman strength or by Divine Weapons.

Body Manipulation: Unique among the other Gods, Zeus is able to alter his own body structure, increasing or decreasing his height, volume, mass and density to his liking. He is also able to expand and stretch his individual body parts, such as limbs, for amplified amount of damage. He is also able to manipulate his bone structure, snapping and twisting his neck in unnatural manners throughout his fight with Adam.

Divine Strength: Zeus possesses extreme amount of superhuman physical strength, surpassing all other Gods. Even in his primary form, Zeus was able to crush his massive pet dragon's skull with a single hand, overpower and hold back Shiva, stop a punch from both Ares and Heracles at the same time, and even defeat his father Kronos. Additionally, Zeus can control his level of strength by manipulating his own anatomy, spontaneously developing a massive amount of thick muscles all across his body. He is able to deliver a single powerful punch or a continuous barrage of rapid-fire punches, with the speed increasing tenfold with each strike. His immense strength also extends to his legs, allowing him to bisect his opponents with a single swift and powerful kick.

Divine Speed: In addition to his monstrous strength, Zeus is capable of moving, reacting, dodging and attacking at the speed of light. He was able to dodge a continuous barrage of rapid-fire punches from Adam, whose speed was measured at 0.01 seconds at the time. His own punches and kicks grew faster during his match, eventually reaching the speeds of 0.00000001 seconds. His ultimate attack, The Fist That Surpassed Time, is a single punch containing all his respect and resentment towards his father Kronos, and like its name suggests, surpasses the time itself in terms of speed, making it seem as through it stopped.

Divine Durability: Like all Gods, Zeus is impervious to all types of man-made weaponry and can withstand prolonged fights with beings comparable to him in sheer strength and speed, such as Kronos or Adam. He was able to withstand a direct hit from The Fist That Surpassed Time during his fight with Kronos, although it resulted in him getting his lower jaw broken. He can survive a vacuum of space, as shown during his fight with his father, unaffected by extreme temperatures and cosmic radiation.

Adamas Form: By compressing all of his muscle mass to its very limits, Zeus can archive his Adamas Form to concentrate all his divine might into each and every movement. In this state, Zeus is nigh-invulnerable and immune to being replicated by Adam's Divine Reflection, eventually causing his opponent to become blind as a result. However, the incredible stain it puts Zeus' body through resulted in his collapsing to his knees after the fight, and can only be maintained for five to twelve minutes.

Ambrosia: When fused into an unknown red liquid, Zeus' blood possesses special properties, allowing mortals who drink it to attain immortality and Godhood. However, this process only works on "true heroes", as anyone else will die instantly. This way, both Achilles and Alcides both became Demigods with strength to match that of Ares. Later, Zeus would propose Alcides to become a God, with the latter becoming a God of Fortitude known as Heracles. Raw Zeus' blood can cause death even to mortals comparable to him in power, such as Adam, causing him to profusely bleed from ears, nose and forehead when only a single drop of it fell into his eye.

Trivia[]

  • Although Zeus in Record of Ragnarok is the Chairman of the Gods' Council, and consequently the most important God of the series, if we considered all the real Mythologies present in the series Zeus would be inferior to many other Gods also present in Record of Ragnarok.
