Wilfred Norton

Wilfred Norton is a major antagonist in the Doctor Who story "Colony in Space".

He was played by the late Roy Skelton, who also voiced various Daleks, Cybermen and Krotons.

Biography[]

Norton was a member of the Interplanetary Mining Corporation crew led by Captain Dent, who played a key role in Dent's plan to force the colonists off Uxarius so it could be mined. Norton infiltrated the colony posing as the survivor of another colony on the planet. He claimed the colony had been attacked by giant lizards and all the other survivors had been killed by the native Primitives. He also tried to turn suspicion on the Doctor and Jo, who were newly arrived at the colony and queried the reports of lizard attacks.

Norton acted in a suspicious manner around the Primitives, pulling a gun on one who was accompanying colony leader Robert Ashe until Ashe told him to stand down. Colonist David Winton introduced him to the colony's only engineer, Jim Holden, who maintained the colony's power supply. Norton was surprised to see Winton was being assisted by a Primitive. He later came back, beat the Primitive to death with a wrench and killed Holden with a spear before destroying the crucial power junction box. He told Ashe and Winton that the Primitive had killed Holden and destroyed the power supply and he had killed the Primitive in self-defence. He pretended to try and fix the power supply but instead made the damage worse.

After Dent had revealed his presence on the planet to the colonists and the Doctor had told them the lizard appearances were faked by IMC, Norton radioed Dent to warn him that Jo and Winton were sneaking aboard the IMC ship to find evidence, leading to them being captured. Later, the Master, posing as an Adjudicator, awarded the planet to IMC. Norton tried to convince Ashe and Winton to abandon the planet but Ashe wanted to mount a legal appeal, while Winton wanted to disarm IMC, force them off the planet and declare themselves independent.

As Winton set up an ambush for IMC, Norton attempted to radio them a warning again but was caught in the act by a colonist, Alec Leeson. Norton killed Alec, but his radio was smashed in the struggle. Forced to join the colonists in setting up the ambush, he shouted out a warning to Dent and was promptly shot dead by Winton.
