Biography[]
Backstory[]
Vigarde was the monarch of the Empire of Grado, which he ruled with kindness and wisdom. His only child was a boy named Lyon, whom Vigarde deeply cared about. The Emperor befriended Fado, the king of Renais (the nearby country) and their friendship led to not only a long term peace between both countries, but also Lyon and Fado's twins Ephraim and Erika becoming best friends.
One day, while travelling across his country, Vigarde's procession was attacked by dogs. Two young brothers who were watching the procession, Glen and Cormag, realized that the dogs were scaring the horses drawing Vigarde's carriage. They threw stones at the dogs to make them flee, but hit the imperial guards, who arrested them for their actions. Fortunately, Vigarde knew that they meant well and the guards released them. He invited them to a feast and, in front of their skills, proposed them to join his army, which they agreed to. Glen quickly rose through the ranks and became a member of a team made of the three highest ranked generals of Grado called the "Imperial Three". The other two members of the team were named Duessel and Valter.
Another day, Vigarde sent to an impoverished town who needed food for Winter provisions, even if the inhabitants of said city could not pay their taxes, out of kindness. This led a young girl from that town, Selena, to gain utter respect for Vigarde, join the country's military and become a knight.
During a battle General Valter was forced to use General Duessel's cursed lance and lost his sanity in the process. This led him to harm innocents and heartlessly kill surrendering enemies. For these crimes, he was fired by Vigarde and replaced by the aforementioned Sir Selena.
One year prior to the game's debut, Lyon used his magical powers to predict the destruction of Grado by a natural disaster and advised his father to ask Renais for help. However, Vigarde refused out of pride. The latter fell ill around the same times and died from his sickness. Crushed by despair, Lyon used the sacred stone of Renais in an attempt to revive his father, but the Demon King trapped inside the stone took over Lyon's body and revived the Emperor as a mindless puppet. The undead ruler manipulated the imperial army into attacking the other countries of the continent of Magvel and destroying the other sacred stones, so Fomortiis could be restored to full power, while Lyon destroyed the stone of Grado around the same time.
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones[]
Vigarde "orders" to his troops to invade Renais, much to the surprise of the Imperial Three, and rehires Valter. After taking over Renais, killing Fado and destroying the stone of Renais, he reinstates Valter as a general, hires two more generals (Riev and Caellach) and orders his troops to attack the remaining countries, destroy the remaining stones, defeat the royal siblings of Renais, and protect Grado.
In front of Vigarde's sudden mood swing, Duessel turns on him and joins forces with Ephraim while Glen spares Eirika and plans on possibly defecting too, but Vigarde has Selena hunts down Duessel and Valter kills Glen. That said, Duessel, survives thanks to Ephraim's help. Ephraim later decides to attack Grado's palace and kills Selena during his assault. He then reaches the palace's throne room, challenges the Emperor and defeats him. After his fall, Vigarde's corpse disappears and Ephraim learns from an imperial scholar named Knoll that the Emperor was dead all along.
