~ Richard Wellington's stance in life.

Richard Wellington is a minor antagonist in the second Ace Attorney game, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice for All. He's the main antagonist and the culprit of the first case The Lost Turnabout. He's a pretentious con-artist that scams people and uses the money to inflate his own ego. When a police officer named Dustin Prince gets a hold of his phone after a bumping incident, he panics and murders him out of cowardice and pins the blame on Prince's girlfriend Maggey Byrde. In spite of gloating about himself, he's less intelligent than he lets on.

In the anime, he was voiced by Daisuke Kishio in Japanese and Ricco Fajardo in English.

Biography[]

Wellington was a con artist, part of a larger ring. While walking through the park one day, he lost his phone. The phone was found by Maggey Byrde and Dustin Prince, who agreed to meet him and give him back his phone. When Richard entered the park, he saw Dustin in his police uniform and broke into a panic. Since his phone had the names and numbers of other con artists, he realized he and the group would be finished if the police got a hold of it. He killed Dustin by shoving him off a ledge, breaking his neck. He then tried to pin the murder on Maggey.

Shortly before the trial, he found Maggey's attorney, Phoenix Wright, holding the phone. He picked up a fire extinguisher and hit Phoenix on the head, knocking him out and causing him to develop temporary amnesia. By mistake, he stole Wright's phone rather than his own (since both of them looked the same). Phoenix later used this to catch him, calling his own phone to prove Richard tried to steal it, which in turn proved his guilt to the crime.

Breakdown[]

Wellington nervously mumbles to himself, then suddenly bursts into a piercing scream while choking himself with his own scarf. He continues doing so for several seconds while his face loses color, until he faints from oxygen deprivation.

Personality[]

Wellington is a pompous, rude, arrogant, and egotistical person. He is about as talkative as Wendy Oldbag. He will often make various expressions designed to call something to mind without mentioning it in an explicit manner to historical figures. He will also point out the resemblances to himself and others to them. Before he appears in the court, Winston Payne informed the judge in advance that Wellington had an inclination to say things that would "rub people the wrong way." His overreaction towards Prince seems to point out he was overly paranoid and cannot make any acts of rational consciousness.

Trivia[]

  • He is absent from the first season of the Ace Attorney anime, the only villain of the first two games to have that distinction, but he appears in the premiere of its second season, which is mainly adapted from the third game. This was mostly due to fan outcry over his exclusion from the first season.
