Forgive me! Désolé! I cannot argue wiz ‘im!
~ Jean Armstrong

Jean Armstrong is a minor antagonist featured in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations case "Recipe for Turnabout". Armstrong and Viola Cadaverini were both accomplices to Furio Tigre's murder of Glen Elg. They then try to pin the blame on Maggey Byrde.

In the Ace Attorney anime, he was voiced by Fukushi Ochiai; in the English dub, he was voiced by J. Michael Tatum.

History[]

Jean Armstrong is the owner and chef of Trés Bien. However, his restaurant became unpopular for overpriced and terrible tasting foods. He later took out a loan of five-hundred-thousand dollars from Furio Tigre, and due to the low number of customers in the restaurant, he was unable to pay the loan and had no choice but to work with Tigre. After the murder happened, he tried to steal the lottery ticket that Glen Elg had. However, the one he got was worth a dollar instead of the five-hundred-thousand dollars that Glen had won.

When first meeting Phoenix, he questions him about Maggey's motive is; Armstrong both declines to answer and also steals Phoenix's Magatama. After Phoenix figures it out, Jean tells Phoenix about his debt, and, on the final day of investigation, he punches Phoenix for figuring out the crime (after being ordered to do so by Tigre). Thankfully for Phoenix, Dick Gumshoe appears to deal with him and Tigre while Phoenix escapes.

Armstrong then testifies in court about the incident only to get caught lying about listening to the radio with a ruptured ear drum and Victor Kudo seeing the murder in the mirror's reflection. He then admits that he was forced to cooperate with Furio Tigre for the loan in order to save his restaurant.

Despite being an accomplice to the murder of Glen Elg, it seems no punishment was given to Jean Armstrong.

Personality[]

Jean is extremely flamboyant and performative, chewing the scenery whenever he is given the chance. He seems to be unaware of how terrible his cooking is and is an impulsive man, stealing items without giving it a second thought.

He is attracted to men like Phoenix Wright, becoming flustered when Furio Tigre flirts with him in court in an attempt to defame Phoenix Wright.

It is unknown if he is French or not, but he tries to give off the impression of being French, peppering his speech with butchered French words. He also seems to have a fluid gender identity, referring to himself as a girl multiple times throughout the chapter.

Trivia[]

  • A lot of Jean's character comes from many contradictory occurrences. He's gay yet runs a maid cafe with provocatively dressed women. His restaurant also has a French ambiance, yet it's implied he cannot properly speak the language.
