Rhino (2010 Marvel Animated Universe)

Alex O'Hirn, better known as Rhino, is a supporting antagonist in the Ultimate Spider-Man series.

Alex was an ordinary student at Midtown High who was repeatedly bullied by Flash Thompson, causing him to become violent and eventually steal an Oscorp transformation serum and become Rhino. He eventually becomes a member of the Sinister Six and later of the SHIELD New Warriors.

He was voiced by Bob Glauberman.

Personality[]

Alex is initially accepting of abuse and bullying when it happens to him, but becoming Rhino changes him to become aggressive, violent, and having no remorse for causing destruction and even wishing to kill. When Spider-Man convinces him not to be violent he decides to change and eventually succeeds in controlling his temper. He has shown that despite his tendency to be deceptive he's still kind at heart.

Biography[]

Alex is a prodigy student and scientific genius at Midtown similar to Peter Parker, the superhero known as Spider-Man. Peter's previous bully, Flash Thompson had also bullied Alex. He however now bullies Alex due to Peter previously standing up to him (more accurately, Wolverine attacks Flash when he's placed in Peter's body). Alex visibly takes the bullying and despite Peter's protests Flash refuses to stop, driving Alex to rage. Flash mysteriously finds his car destroyed along with a death threat. In the meantime, Spider-Man and Powerman are appointed by Director Fury to stop thefts directed at Oscorp. They find a powerful superhuman called Rhino robbing Oscorp shipments to steal Octavius' animal transformation serums. Spider-Man becomes suspicious of Alex one day and follows him. It's revealed Alex had a previous job at Oscorp and managed to steal his first serum then, taking them regularly to turn into Rhino. Alex no prepares himself to kill Flash. He attacks Flash's home at a gas station but Spider-Man manages to calm Rhino down and convince him killing Flash will make him a monster. Rhino is arrested by SHIELD but Spider-Man promises a reversal to the serum will be found.

At an unknown point, Octavius breaks Rhino out of custody and asks him to kill Spider-Man in exchange for a cure. Rhino joins the Sinister Six alongside Kraven, Beetle, Electro, and Lizard. They fight Spider-Man and his team but are strategically defeated. Rhino among other villains becomes a reoccurring foe bend on revenge against Spider-Man until after Flash becomes Agent Venom. Curt Connors, who was cured as Lizard identifies that Alex is permanently Rhino. This in addition to finding out Flash was rewarded despite being a bully causes him to go mad. He angrily attacks Manhattan causing a fight with him against Spider-Man, Agent Venom, and Hulk. When the heroes are in trouble Rhino is convinced to value life over destroying it so he helps stop a tunnel from collapsing. After this he becomes a student at SHIELD Academy, a school meant to train and teach young superhumans. He initially has a rough relationship with Flash and Spider-Man but eventually controls his temper, becoming frenemies with the former. He serves SHIELD in many missions including combating the rest of the six and eventually Octavius when he allies with HYDRA. Rhino is eventually revealed to be a traitor, as he helped Octavius capture Flash once again in exchange for a cure. He however refuses to see Flash die and saves him, but this leads to him being captured.

Octavius manages to brainwash Rhino and turning him into a weapon, but in the finale, Spider-Man uses Oscorp serums to generate an antidote, curing him. Afterwards, Alex rejoins SHIELD Academy and assumingly redeems himself.

Powers and Abilities[]

Alex is a smart child prodigy, and as Rhino, he has immense superhuman strength, endurance, and durability. He has been strong enough to demolish buildings and SHIELD's Hulkbuster armor, even being strong enough to defeat Hulk in a fight.

Trivia[]

Contrasting from the comics and many other versions, this Rhino is a high school student who transforms into his alter-ego, as opposed to being an adult criminal with an armor.
