She is the agoraphobic but fun loving diving instructor at the St. Mathilda boarding school who develops an obsessive and violent crush on her new student Fiamma Corona, the story's protagonist.
She was portrayed by Eva Green, who also played Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, Ava Lord in Sin City:A Dame to Kill For, Milady de Winter in The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan and The Three Musketeers: Milady, Angelique Bouchard in Dark Shadows, Eve Connors in White Bird in a Blizzard and Artemisia in 300: Rise of an Empire.
Biography[]
Past[]
Gribben grew up as a student at St Mathilda's and had aspirations to travel the world and explore after graduating. Unfortunately for Gribben however, she developed agoraphobia (fear of the outside world) at some point during her youth - making her unable to go any further than the village the school was on the outskirts of, this led to her staying where she grew up and gaining employment as the diving instructor for the school. She built up a façade of being a grand adventurer overtime however and used this to impress her students.
Cracks[]
At the start of the story Gribben is still working as a diving instructor and is adored by her students, especially Di Radfield who is completely smitten with her. In return Di is her favorite student and the two had an almost friend like relationship, with her usually taking Di on canoe rides, giving her books and constantly complimenting her during diving lessons.
Soon however things change between the two when Fiamma Coronna an Italian (Spanish in the film) aristocrat's daughter, Gribben finds herself completely smitten with her new student, driving Di down a path of jealousy and resentment, while Gribben grows more and more obsessed with Fiamma in spite of the latter's clear disinterest and dislike for her. After Di forces Fiamma to run away this becomes even more clear, with Gribben uncharacteristically snapping at Di upon her importance to the team. Once Fiamma is returned however she is overjoyed and immediately rushes to embrace the girl.
As time goes by Fiamma and Di start to begin a genuine friendship, culminating in Fiamma suggesting all of the girls have a midnight feast, something Gribben gives permission towards and even supplies alcohol for. After Fiamma ends up having too much to drink and passing out however, Gribben intervenes, telling the girls to clean themselves up while she hides Fiamma in her bedroom to avoid suspicion, from the staff. This however was a ruse in order to give her the opportunity to molest Fiamma, who is left enraged and distraught from be awoken. Unbeknownst to both of them however, Di actually saw this happening.
After Fiamma leaves storming off Gribben is left desperate and runs after her pleading with her and trying to get her to stay, however she snaps back, telling her that she wants all of the girls to know what her true colours really are. Broken and humiliated Gribben confides in Di about her predicament, lying by telling her that Fiamma intended to spread lies about her to everyone, sending Di into another fit of blind fury and jealousy.
Di and the other girls from the diving group chase Fiamma down and beat her to a pulp, triggering a devastating asthma attack in the process. The group panic, Di demanding the others to go back to the school for help while she searches for her inhaler. After finding it, she's met with Gribben who tells her to go back to the school so she can take over from there.
In spite of her desperate pleas for help and to be given her inhaler, Gribben simply holds Fiamma in her arms, telling her that she's too good for the world and allowing her to die. Leaving everyone in complete distraught. After this Di tells the diving group the truth, finally letting go of her own idolization for Miss G, and they all resign from her class, leaving her in a broken fury.
Gribben then gets fired from the school, and moves into an inn, presumably staying within its walls for the remainder of her life.
Personality[]
Gribben was a complicated and mentally unstable woman, struggling primarily with agoraphobia and apparent but unconfirmed anxiety issues. She was also fairly eccentric and somewhat childish, likely attributes of her isolation to most of the outside world. She enjoyed fashioning herself as an exciting and experienced traveler however, in spite of all of her stories either being fabricated or stolen. However, her charisma and friendly demeanor hid all of this from those around her, especially her students. Upon meeting Fiamma slowly but surely all attempts to hide her true nature drops with her becoming completely infatuated with the girl to an unhealthy degree, on top of this she became extremely moody, rude and surly to everyone else, all the while ignoring Fiamma's clear disdain for her. In the end she was completely willing to rape Fiamma and goad her students into attacking her, showing no remorse or care for her part in the girl's death or what she did to her prior.
Appearance[]
Gribben was an attractive young woman who has a tall and slender build with extremely pale skin and shoulder length, wavy, dark brown hair who usually wore prominent amounts of makeup, until the film's climax where she neglects her appearance entirely. She was a very extravagant woman as well, always wearing fancy and snazzy clothes, usually formal or flashy in appearance.
Trivia[]
- Over the course of the film, Miss G's appearance grows more and more dishevelled and her clothes take on a darker colour pallet. This is most likely a symbolic representation of her darker sides becoming more and more apparent to both the audience and the diving team.
- Miss G wears fourteen different outfits over the course of the film.
