Engen, also known as the Smiling Man, is the central deuteragonist of the manhwa, Hero Killer. He is the leader of the villainous organization known as the Nameless and the newest member of the Elders after defeating Reagen Sinclair.
Appearance[]
Engen is a handsome man with short light brown hair and grey eyes. He is a tall man, having stood over Jintae Yang, with light tone skin and large scar on the left side of his face which resulted in his moniker the "Smiling Man". The scar is stylized as red whenever he is going all out during a battle, and throbs with pain whenever he is reminded of the circumstances behind it.
Personality[]
Engen is a first-class villain with incredible ruthless as he won't hesitate to kill an opponent and isn't against harming bystanders when necessary. He isn't above threatening his comrades if needed, having once casually warned John Nash that he would kill him the next time he interrupted a conversion.
Engen is open to helping others, as he took in Rachel Sinclair to help her kill her father and routinely gave advice to Ihwa for her to become stronger. While remorseless, Engen is shown to honor all those who helped him along the way in the path of becoming powerful in his own twisted way but has no regrets in having used them.
Powers and Abilities[]
Engen is one of the strongest individuals in the series having stood at the top of Villains everywhere since his youth. He is a master in wielding his Gift, Hell, to the point that his natural weakness to the daylight barely bothers him and possesses a number of skills like swordsmanship, speed, and strength, and a century of combat experience. He is also a charismatic leader with his leadership attracting powerful individuals to follow him while possessing great intellect and deadly cunning.
Unlike most Gift users, Engen possesses high levels of EST. When unleashing Hell, he is capable of manifesting hideous creatures or creating entire armies to overwhelm his opponents. His army can also merge into one larger entities, taking the appearance of a large undead and manifesting it as a large executioner's sword that allows him to control his stronger techniques.
History[]
Early life[]
Early in his youth, Engen joined the ranks The King of Nera's followers and befriended another candidate by name of Chain. Eventually, the King's power reached its limit as his body could no longer handle the capabilities of The Torch, so he gathered his strongest followers, among them Engen, to make a proposition. Whoever conquered the most districts would inherit everything that he had, and the War of Inheritance had begun.
At the outset of the war, Engen forged powerful alliances with Chain, Abyss Dancer, and Nugal, earning their loyalty as they fought through countless battles. His prowess soon made him a leading contender for the throne, culminating in his conquest of Cloud Garden, which caught the attention of the Elder Bishop. As the war wore on, Engen emerged as a key figure in the conflict, and after the death of the king, he ultimately claimed the throne of Nera.
However, just days after his coronation, Engen was defeated by a mysterious woman known as The Steel Witch, who shattered the legendary Torch and left him with an iconic scar, marking him as the "Smiling Man." Undeterred, Engen sought to rebuild Nera’s strength, even as rumors of the Skysword—an increasingly powerful hero—spread. The Skysword’s rise eventually led to the formation of the Hero Clan, which clashed with Engen’s forces in what would become the Great War. Engen, now known for his ruthless battles and unyielding spirit, fought fiercely, but after suffering significant defeats, Nera was wiped from history.
Engen’s fate after the war remains shrouded in mystery, with many believing he died in the final battles, leaving behind a legacy of both tragedy and defiance in the Age of Heroes and Villains.
