Cerberus Guard: Sir, one of the men is not responding. We have to move you somewhere more secure.
The Cerberus Leader: I want that asshole's head on a spike, sergeant!
Cerberus Guard: It will be a pleasure, sir! Escort him upstairs.
~ One of the Cerberus informing the Cerberus Leader of the dire situation.
Nothing more dangerous than a lunatic with nothing to lose!
~ The Cerberus Leader on James Earl Cash.

The Cerberus Leader is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Ramirez) of the 2003 controversial Rockstar video-game Manhunt. He is Lionel Starkweather's right-hand man and the leader of the Cerberus unit. The only times he's seen in person are in the concluding cutscenes to the missions "Road to Ruin" and "Trained to Kill", as well as in "Key Personnel", where he serves as a boss.

He was voiced by Brian Maillard, who has also voiced one of the other Cerberus members.

History[]

He first appears in the concluding cutscene to the The Hoods' final episode "Road to Ruin", where he arrives to the exit point of the location on a black van along with four other Cerberus, an elite group designed to transport Cash to Starkweather's desired locations and protect the director at all costs. He pulls a handgun on Cash just as he's about to leave the area, allowing his men to ambush the protagonist and savagely beat him. He then orders them to load the barely conscious Cash into the van, on which he's transported to the territory of the next gang, The Skinz.

When James Earl Cash escapes from Ramirez and the CCPD in "Trained to Kill", the SWAT surrounds and tries to kill Cash, however, the Cerberus appears and kills every single SWAT member. The Cerberus Leader shows himself again and tasers Cash while he's being held at gunpoint by a couple of his subordinates, taking him to Starkweather's estate.

Some time later, the Cerberus bring him to a garage and are about to execute him despite Starkweather's orders, but the psychotic Piggsy, who goes on a rampage and massacres a number of the Cerberus members, interrupts them and allows Cash to escape. This new development prompts the Cerberus Leader to oder his men to lock the elevator leading to Starkweather's location, the attic, and turn off the motor in the basement. Cash witnesses the Cerberus Leader receiving the key to the elevator and goes after him.

The Cerberus Leader starts out in one of the rooms on the first floor, but once a certain amount of his men is killed, one of his subordinates will inform him of the silence on their end and order the others to escort their leader upstairs to a safer place. Thus, Cash is presented with the option of intercepting him and his companions on their way there or fighting him to get to the Head Security Room on the second floor, where he will be waiting for the protagonist along with several other guards, training their weapons on the only door leading into the room. Regardless of the player's approach to the fight, Cash restores the power to the elevator and mows down all the Cerberus infesting the mansion, including the Cerberus Leader, obtaining his elevator key.

Appearance[]

The Cerberus Leader's armor is similar to the standard Cerberus armor, however, the Cerberus Leader lacks a right eye, having a digital eye-patch over it instead of a complete helmet and sports a vertical scar over his left eye. He wields the Assault Rifle during the "Key Personnel" fight and is seen using a Taser in the cutscene of "Trained to Kill" and a Heavy Handgun in the cutscenes of "Road to Ruin" and "Key Personnel".

Personality[]

The Cerberus Leader is a brutal, yet disciplined and hardened professional who's fully engrossed in his work, favoring clean and well-thought-out operations over the messy violence gallores. He's always seen in a company of his subordinates and usually leaves most of the job to them, but is eager to participate in the action when the need arises and is not afraid to come face-to-face with a man who singlehandedly slaughtered hundreds of unhinged thugs and trained law enforcers, though he's fully aware of the threat he poses, being extra careful in his presence as a result. He's quite harsh towards his men, as he's often heard hurling insults at them and openly questions their competence the longer they fail to eliminate Cash.

He seems to have a personal vendetta against Cash, most likely for killing many of his own men, as well as strong contempt for Starkweather during the final episodes, thanks to his lack of foresight and unstable nature that have caused two dangerous killers to run amok in the estate, to the point where he considers bailing, but proves himself to be loyal enough to not do so before killing Cash, doing everything in his power to protect the mad director and even willingly makes himself the protagonist's main priority by concealing the key to the elevator to Starkweather's hideout on his person, causing Cash to actively hunt him down, which might be in part due to a large sum of money Starkweather pays him to keep him safe rather than genuine respect.

Despite all of the traits above painting him as a cold-blooded professional who does his job dispassionately, this couldn't be farther from the truth. In reality, the Cerberus Leader is far more depraved than he initially appears, possessing a strong huntsman spirit, while treating the targets of Starkweather's assignments as sport; a number of crucified bodies and severed heads impaled on the gate and balcony spikes can be found all over the estate, implying that he and his men collect their victims' bodies as trophies. According to his exchange with one of his subordinates in "Key Personnel", he was planning on adding Cash's head to his collection once he was done and over with.

Trivia[]

  • The Cerberus Leader's minions can be seen as a cameo in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
  • Interestingly, the Cerberus leader can be executed, unlike Ramirez, despite both having extensive combat training and experience. This is most likely a developer oversight.
  • In a way, killing the Cerberus Leader is actually more difficult than killing Piggsy or Ramirez because the Cerberus Leader uses the most tactics out of any enemy in the game. He stays in a single room with four other Cerberus members, all with fully automatic assault rifles, and they keep their guns pointed at the only door at all times. This forces the player to carefully take them out one at a time and not go into the room too much and be shot to pieces. Most players even believe this is a bug because of how difficult it is.
  • Due to an oversight, despite having unique dialogue, he uses standard Cerberus voice lines, although all of it can still be found in the game's files.
