Colonel Mustard is a major character in the 1985 film Clue, appearing as a supporting character in Endings A and B, and a supporting antagonist in Ending C.
He was portrayed by the late Martin Mull, who also portrayed Gideon Hutton in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Willard Kraft in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Vlad Plasmius in Danny Phantom.
Biography[]
Colonel Mustard served as an actual colonel in World War II. He was also secretly a war profiteer, who stole radio equipment from the Air Force to sell on the black market, earning a fortune for himself. At some point afterward, he became involved with a top secret fusion bomb project. Wadsworth found out about Colonel Mustard's war profiteering and, as Mr. Boddy, started blackmailing him.
Wadsworth invited Mustard to a party using the dirt he had gained on him as bait, along with five others (Mrs. White, Miss Scarlett, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, and Mr. Green) to blackmail them all for large sums of money. But things go awry when Mr. Boddy gives the guests lethal weapons and victims start racking up as the night goes on, starting with the cook getting stabbed by Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Boddy getting killed by Professor Plum, and finally Mustard's victim arrives at the mansion they were in, claiming to be a random motorist whose car broke down outside.
Mustard recognized the man as his driver during World War II, who was also an accomplice in his crimes, and decided he had to kill the motorist to protect his secret from getting out. He then pickpocketed the weapons cabinet key from Wadsworth and suggested that the 8 of them split up. While split into pairs, he separated from Miss Scarlet, unlocked the weapons cabinet and took the wrench, went into the lounge using the secret passage behind the fireplace, and then killed the motorist with a blow to the back of the head.
By the end of the film, Wadsworth deduces who all of the murderers were and reveals himself as the person who killed the singing telegram woman who appeared at the door, revealing his true identity as the real Mr. Boddy. Mr. Green then takes out his own revolver and kills Wadsworth with a shot in the abdomen. Mustard is then promptly arrested after Green reveals himself as an undercover FBI agent that was sent to stop Mr. Boddy and allowed the FBI to storm the mansion.
Other Endings[]
Not much about Mustard's character changes between the two alternate endings. He is still a war profiteer, however while he admits that the motorist was his driver in these endings, he wasn't the one who killed the man and in fact had never even considered doing so, arguing that he was only ever a thief at worst but never a murderer. However, Mrs. Peacock argued that he was still guilty of mass manslaughter, as many Allied airmen died as a result of their plane radios being sabotaged.
In Ending A, Miss Scarlet is the one who killed the motorist, and in Ending B it was Mrs. Peacock.
