Albert "Mister" Johnson is the main antagonist of the novel The Color Purple, and its adaptations of the same name.
In the 1985 film, he was portrayed by Danny Glover, who also portrayed Colonel Johnson in Shooter and Bob Goodall in Switchback. In the 2023 film, he was portrayed by Colman Domingo, who also portrayed Victor Strand in Fear the Walking Dead, William Burke in the remake of Candyman, and Unicron in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Biography[]
Albert had a family and he needed a wife, since he was widowed. Albert was going to marry Nettie Harris, however her stepfather refused, so her sister Celie became Albert's wife. Celie wanted to live with Nettie, but one day, Albert tries to rape Nettie and she escaped from Albert. He gets mad and kicks Nettie out, and prevents Celie from having any contact with her sister. If Celie didn't work, he bullied her and hurt her. Also, Albert loves the singer called Shug Avery, He wanted to marry her, but she was already married with another man called Grady.
When Shug and Grady visited Albert's house on Easter day, she and Celie discovered that Albert hid Nettie's letters. As Albert had a meal with them, Shug tried to talk Albert into letting her take Celie with her. But he said no and Celie told everyone that Albert took all of Nettie's letter.
Albert annoyed Celie again. She gets very mad and was going to kill Albert but Avery stopped her. Albert gets mad again and was going to hurt Celie, but she stopped Albert and left, becoming free.
Albert lives alone again, regretting what he did to Celie. So he wants Celie back, but she ignored him. He winds up going to the Naturalization office to help bring Nettie home from Africa. Albert took Nettie to home to Celie and reunited the two sisters.
