The Indigo Wisp (インディゴウィスプ Indigo Wisupu?) is a creature that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a breed of Wisp that grants the Indigo Asteroid Color Power.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

Baby Indigo Wisp SR

An infantile Indigo Wisp, from Sonic Runners.

The Indigo Wisps have sphere-shaped heads with one violet eye each. They also have three round tentacles stemming from the bottom of their heads, and a small round-tipped antenna on top of their heads. Most noticeably, they have a indigo ring, similar to an planetary ring, around their heads.

Infantile Indigo Wisps have shorter and rounder tentacles and a larger eye. Their ring also encircles the tip of their antennas instead of their bodies.

Characteristics and culture[]

Being Wisps, the Indigo Wisps are halcyon, social, bright, energetic and pure of heart.[1] They are likewise peaceful, playful, non-hostile and friendly of nature, and enjoy spending most of their time playing with others. Due to their overall good nature, they easily get along with everybody, except bad guys.[1] Also, rather than aliens, with their floaty movements, they are more like fairies.[1] Additionally, while they are not necessarily fighters, they are nonetheless brave and very helpful towards their friends and allies.

Powers and abilities[]

The Indigo Wisps are able to levitate in midair at will, which serves as their main method of transportation.

They are able to generate and store their own unique variant of a powerful energy known as Hyper-go-on inside their own bodies, which is their life source. It is unclear to what extent they can use their own Hyper-go-on.

The Indigo Wisps are able to pass on a fraction of their Hyper-go by phasing into the recipient. When organic beings or robots receive their Hyper-go-on, they can transform into the Indigo Asteroid which enables gravity manipulation. Alternatively, the Indigo Wisps are able to manifest the Indigo Asteroid's power themselves without phasing into a recipient.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Lost World[]

The Indigo Wisps made their debut in the Wii U version, PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World. In the gameplay on all versions of the game, the Indigo Wisps appear as Item Box power-ups that enable the Indigo Asteroid. The player encounters the Indigo Wisps exclusively in Windy Hill on the Wii U/PC version, and in Windy Hill, Desert Ruins (where they are first unlocked), Frozen Factory (Extra Zone only), Sky Road, and Lava Mountain on the Nintendo 3DS version.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, the Indigo Wisps returned as Wisp Capsule power-ups for the Avatar's Asteroid Wispon, which is the only Wispon that will accept them. With the Indigo Wisp, the Asteroid Wispon is able to perform its special action for a limited time. The player encounters the Indigo Wisps in Spaceport, Prison Hall, Arsenal Pyramid, Park Avenue, Aqua Road, Capital City, VS. Infinite, Red Gate Bridge, Imperial Tower, and VS. Death Egg Robot.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Runners[]

In Sonic Runners, the Indigo Wisps play supporting roles to the main cast. Here, it is revealed that some Indigo Wisps chose to stay on earth after the events of Sonic Colors because they liked it there, and that they have established their own small colonies on the planet. Over the course of the game, Team Sonic comes across the Indigo Wisps several times, whom they often end up saving from Dr. Eggman and/or his lackeys. Occasionally, the Indigo Wisps will also ask the team for help solving different problems, whether it be either Eggman-related trouble or more personal issues. Sometimes though, the Indigo Wisps will help Team Sonic as well, usually by providing information or handling smaller tasks.

In gameplay, the Indigo Wisps appear as a part of the Indigo Asteroid Equippable Item which the player can use during the stages to transform into the Indigo Asteroid.

IDW Publishing[]

After the events of Sonic Colors, a bunch of Indigo Wisps and other fellow Wisps settled down on Sonic's world where they would help out the residents of Sonic’s world whenever they could.[2] Near the end of the Eggman War, Barricade Town, which served as a hub for Wispon distribution, was saved and subsequently conquered by mercenary duo Rough and Tumble. As a result of the duo taking over, many Wisps, including several Indigo Wisps, were hoarded in Deployment Pods and Wispons by the two skunk brothers.[2]

In Barricade Town, the Indigo Wisps found salvation when Sonic and Knuckles arrived to stop Rough and Tumble. During the heroes' subsequent fight with Rough and Tumble, the Indigo Wisps and their fellow Wisps were convinced by Sonic to not let the two villains boss them around. As such, the Wisps in Rough and Tumble's Wispons left them, leaving their arsenal powerless and allowing Sonic and Knuckles to defeat them. Afterward, the now-liberated Indigo Wisps decided to stick around and help the villagers defend their town by powering their Wispons.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The Indigo Wisp is the only Wisp first introduced in Sonic Lost World that appears in the main campaigns of both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of said game.
  • In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the Indigo Wisp is the only Wisp to appear exclusively in a world's Extra Zone.
