“Not all of us get happy endings. Some of us are destined to crash and burn. You and me? We’re a disaster waiting to happen.”
I hadn’t felt anything in a long time.
Not since the day my soul reached out for a certain blond-haired Nephilim. One I could never have. One who was my sworn enemy.
And one I had no choice but to someday destroy.
The truth? I dared not even speak it into existence. It was better for both of us that way. Better to live in the safety of denial than to jump freely into a life that would only end in tragedy.
I thought back to the night Lazarus came for me. Beneath his cold exterior, I had sensed kindness, albeit small. “He saved me.”
My brothers made everything better, making me smile even when I didn’t feel like it. Just like they’d made it better thousands of years ago when we were young boys. I’d been so lost. Hollow. They had given me a home—a family—and filled that emptiness in my chest.
My eyes found Bellamy’s. He glared at me with the fire of a thousand suns. So much scorn in that one glare. Something else lingered in those depths too. Something neither of us could deny but both of us refusing to accept. A thing we couldn’t accept.
I tore my gaze from his and followed Asa from the cell.
“What do you want me to say?”
“The truth.”
“And what might that be?”
Bellamy grabbed the wedge of bread and took a bite, gaze unwavering on mine as he chewed. “You tell me.”
“When I eventually get free, you better run, demon.”
“Me? Run from you?” I leaned in closer. “Never.”
Bellamy’s scent crashed into me, like rich bourbon mixed with the citrusy notes of bergamot. His lips softly parted, though his gaze remained hard. Piercing. He wanted me and hated that he did.
Well, that made two of us.
“I’ll tear you apart,” he said, voice low with a raspy edge. His warm breath feathered across my mouth.
“I look forward to seeing you try.”
“So you see? I don’t save people. I hurt them.”
“You saved me,” Bellamy whispered.
“I’ll always save you.” My chest got tight with the confession. “Only you. I don’t care about anyone else.”
He nodded to the mug in his hands. “This is a bribe for Daman.” His Russian accent was thick as he spoke. “Coffee in the morning makes him less grumpy.”
Bellamy snorted. “He’s such a damn diva.”
Lazarus spun around, whip in hand, and didn’t hesitate before hurling it toward Asa. Something in his expression stopped me in my tracks. He looked… terrified. I had never seen him like that before.
Alastair stared at them in stunned silence.
“Has the regret kicked in yet?” he asked against the top of my shoulder.
“The regret kicked in the second I kissed you.” But damn if I wouldn’t do it again. I knew I’d always choose that kiss. Always choose this moment, even if everything that came next destroyed me.
“Don’t make me teleport you into a volcano and leave your ass there.”
I snorted. “I have wings, dummy. I’d just fly out. But nice try.”
“The lava melting away your flesh would hurt like hell though, even if you could instantly heal yourself. So I’d still win.” Then he added, “Dummy.”
He braced an arm on the cage for support as he got to his feet. “Don’t expect me to save your ass next time.”
Yet, I knew he would. Just as I’d always save him.
It was our curse to bear.
“You’re an idiot,” he said, his voice cracking. “Self-sacrifice isn’t like you at all. Where’s that annoying, cocky-as-fuck demon I love to hate?”
“He died that day on the beach when you held a blade to his throat,” I said. “I still remember the way you looked, covered in blood and sweat. Messy bangs falling into your face. You were beautiful and devastating. I knew right then you’d be my undoing.”
And I had been right.
“Don’t flatter yourself, sweetheart,” he said, voice low. “I don’t care about you. My soul might reach out for yours, but you’ll never have my loyalty or my heart.”
“Your heart? Fine with me.” A pang hit my chest for some reason. “I have no use for it.”
“You saved me.”
“I’ll always save you. Only you. I don’t care about anyone else.”
“You know, I’ve heard stories of men burning down entire cities… worlds… just for one last kiss.” Phoenix ghosted his lips over mine. “I think I get it now.”
I knew I wouldn’t lift a finger to save the world. But I would burn everything down to save him.
“I would destroy anyone for you. Anyone and everyone who hurt you. I’d kill them all and not think twice about it. Your enemies are now mine.”
“Out of everyone in this world, you’re the only one I don’t ever want to hurt.”
I couldn’t give two shits about the fate of mankind. But walking away from him now would crush me.
“It’s too late for me to walk away from him. Not without tearing my heart from my goddamn chest.”
“Then I suggest you learn to live without it,” Galen said.
Daman walked over to me, shooting Phoenix a cautious look. He then hugged my side. “We’re not abandoning you, B. When I struggled with my feelings for War, you were there for me. I’m gonna be here for you too.”
I pulled him into a full hug. “Thanks.”
“Aw, you guys.” Raiden jumped up from the couch and wrapped his arms around both me and Daman. “Family hug.”
“Get off me, you big ape.” Daman tried to wiggle free. He was like a cat that only liked to be touched on his terms.
“Me next!” Gray pounced on my back and leaned his head on mine. “I love you, Bell. Sorry we hurt your feelings.”
“Yeah.” Daman’s arms tightened around me. “This isn’t your fault, and we’re all assholes for not seeing that sooner.”
Galen met my eyes from across the room. “I’m not hugging you.”
I hadn’t felt anything in a long time. Not since the day my soul reached out for a certain blond-haired Nephilim. One I could never have. One who was my sworn enemy. And one I had no choice but to someday destroy.
As Bellamy moved from my neck and kissed me, the taste of my blood on his lips, I knew I wouldn’t lift a finger to save the world.
But I would burn everything down to save him.
“What are you waiting for, a fancy invitation? Stick it in or I’ll find someone else who will.”
“Someone else? They won’t fuck you like I can.”
Humor danced in his eyes. “Prove it.”
“They’ll know I’m yours. My mark is on you, but yours is on my soul.”
“You’re such a damn cheeseball.”
“But who saves the hero?”
“I save myself.”
“You don’t have to.” […] “You can stay with me and watch everything burn.”
“Would it be corny for me to say my heart’s desire is always where you are?”
Phoenix rolled his eyes. “Extremely corny. Don’t say it again.”
“But if you die, I’ll never forgive you.”
“And if you die, I’ll find a way to resurrect you and then kill you myself for pissing me off.”
“You’ll marry me?”
“I must be out of my goddamn mind, but yes,” Phoenix said. “I’m not saying cheesy shit in front of your brothers at the wedding though. That’s where I draw the line.”
“I hate you, Phoenix.” Another tear fell. "But I need you."
"Yeah." I swallowed hard. "I need you too."
"I need you," he repeated. "I don't want to. But I do."
"We're both screwed, then. Because I feel the same."
I rarely laughed. I wasn’t sure I knew how to.
I felt empty on the inside. Hollow.
"What would I do if I did stay, Bellamy? I'm not like you. I'm not a hero."
"I'm not asking you to be." He pulled back to meet my gaze. "All I'm asking is for you to stay by my side."
“I break beds, not hearts.”
If they hurt a single hair on his head while I was gone, I'd bash all their skulls in.
My entire life, I'd looked after myself because it wasn't like anyone else gave a damn about me.
"I would destroy anyone for you." I touched his cheek. "Anyone and everyone who hurt you. I'd kill them all and not think twice about it."
Strange how I'd destroyed so much in my life, but he was the one thing I never wanted to break. The one thing I wanted to protect.
Me: Hey, bitch.
Daman: Love you too
I needed more coffee. One cup wasn't enough to deal with this bullshit. God, I sound like Daman. (I'm the same phahaha)
“Dummy.”
"You know, I've heard stories of men burning down entire cities… worlds… just for one last kiss." Phoenix ghosted his lips over mine. "I think I get it now."
When he kissed me, a small, pained whimper escaped me. Unstoppable, just like this ache in my chest.
And then he disappeared.
"I feel nothing for humans and don't care about their fate. But you can always trust me to be by your side. I'll always protect you."
He looked… terrified. I had never seen him like that before.
“I do want to kill you. Someday.”
“But right now? I want to fuck you.”
Asa chuckled… and then backhanded him across the face. My fucking heart leapt into my throat. Worse? My body moved forward on an impulse. Not far. But enough for Belphegor to notice.
Gosh, Pheonix was down bad for Bellamy, he can’t even fake it that he didn’t care 🤣🥵
My eyes found Bellamy’s. He glared at me with the fire of a thousand suns. So much scorn in that one glare. Something else lingered in those depths too. Something neither of us could deny but both of us refusing to accept. A thing we couldn’t accept.
”When I was ready to die down there, you wouldn’t let me give up. So how can I let you?”
“Before I throw everything away, I needed to know.”
“Needed to know what?” My voice broke on the last word.
“What it was like to taste you,” he whispered. “To feel you.”
My heart broke reading that…
“I would destroy anyone for you.” I touched his cheek. “Anyone and everyone who hurt you. I’d kill them all and not think twice about it.”
