4/5 “Deato mendea valus febletta. The Gods give every man a weakness.” Another amazing novel in a fantastic series. I seriously can't recomm 4/5 “Deato mendea valus febletta. The Gods give every man a weakness.” Another amazing novel in a fantastic series. I seriously can't recommend these books enough to fantasy fans. This is definitely my favourite novel in the series so far, however for me it still had some pretty minor flaws. The book is set four months after its predecessor. It follows Falcio, Kest & Brasti as they go on another adventure full of good shit. "Every village needs an idiot," After reading two books in the series and feeling kinda meh about them, I was relieved that I enjoyed this one from start to finish. The writing continues to be flawless, the action scenes are amazing and so well written. This time around I found the fights & action scenes less 'random'. Like I was only here for the badassery and fist fights, luckily I got both. One of my favourite things about this novel is that it's extremely fast paced, so I didn't have time to get bored while reading it, like shit went down on every page. So it's easily devoured, I'm a snail and read it in two days. One of the minor cons for me is the book is written in first person POV, this is definitely a matter of personal taste and it shouldn't effect anyone else's reading experience. But it ruined mine. I just wanted to be in Brasti and Kest's brains aswell, honestly I'm goddamn sick of Falcio & his bitching, That brings me to another minor issue I had with the novel, I can't stand the way Falcio is. his such a dick, the way he talks to his friend is depressing & tbh he is just a depressing sap and I feel because we read from only his perspective that the book takes on a depressing feel and kinda saps the fun out the book at times. But I still love the idiot, ALSO I hate the romance in this novel it feels so forced, so whenever the 'insta-love pair' were together I felt like headbutting a wall. Now all that shitty stuff is out of the way, I can outrageously gush over the things I loved about this book. I'm a sucker for a bromance and totally LOVE the bromance contained in this novel. It gave me all the feels. Instead of the Three Musketeers for me it's like the Three Stooges only with a swords & sorcery, they are all endearing idiots. The banter is amazing. Like I just want to embrace all three characters.. even Falcio who I think could out talk me in a talking competition. Like damn that guy never shuts up. But seriously they all need to become my friends in real life. I felt more emotionally attached to the characters in this book, so at some parts while reading dust flew into my eyes and made them water. The character development is amazing for all characters, especially one of the side character Valiana, imo she is one of the best developed fantasy characters ever and definitely one of my favourites. I also adore two new characters Aline because she has more balls then the men and she's a 14 year old girl & Tommer because his the bravest snowflake ever created. I totally missed Darriana in this book, I need more of her. A fantastic character driven novel with a fun and well thought-out plot. This book borderlines on grimdark and I love how savage it is. I definitely approve. P.s. Saint mercy would hate me because I'm as bloodthirsty as they come, plus I hate the bitch and want to stab her with a blunt rusted fork. 4/5 Buddy read with the Kings heart; Petrik . "To mayhem and fighting". I'm really struggling to write this review, due to the complexity o 4/5 Buddy read with the Kings heart; Petrik . "To mayhem and fighting". I'm really struggling to write this review, due to the complexity of the plot and of course how SPOILERISH my draft review was, so I'm just going to just write a short spoiler free review. Okay so despite feeling 'meh' about book one of this series, I went into this book with high expectations and I must say this is definitely better then the first. I felt this book had a lot more pro's then con's, and I'm FINALLY starting to see why everyone adores this series. Once again the book started extremely slow, I thought it was going to be another disappointment, however around 300 pages in shit got exciting and when I say exciting, I really mean it. This book did not slow down until the end, it's brutal, it's terrifying & just downright cool. I'm starting to very slowly become addicted to this series, this author knows how to bring the grim to the dark. I LOVE IT. Holy shit! some scenes had me CRINGING. For all you salty sea dogs that have read this book I will tell you that, THAT SCENE (you know the one I'm talking about) made me love this book, it was fucking amazing, terrible, brutal & savage as fuck, but so good. I'm fangirling over the savagery displayed in this novel. But it wasn't all rainbows & buttercups. I still find the writing kinda choppy and the world building definitely improved and is no longer a hinderance BUT I just can't look past how much I hated the start of this novel and I don't know why I didn't like it, I guess it just felt very similar to book one and the first 30% was boring. I couldn't stand Falcio at the start. So the ending definitely saved the book for me. Still not a favourite but a pretty cool book and I'm really excited to continue with the series. “He’d told me the world could be the most lovely place you could imagine, so long as your imagination was fueled by love.” The story follows Falcio Val Mond, first cantor of the Kings Greatcoats. After the murder of a duke and his whole family, Falcio is determined to find the culprits and bring them to justice, but Falcio is dying from a rare poison. He must not only save himself but he must also save the country. The plot was exciting, thrilling, captivating & fast paced. Definitely a fantastic sequel to an okay predecessor. Although I still don't love this series, I'm definitely enjoying it a lot more. My favourite thing is still Castell's flawless writing style. The magic system is better explained in this book but we didn't find out everything so it is still mysterious. I also really like that the Greatcoats didn't spilt up this book and love their bromance so much, did I mentioned that I laughed until I got a pain in my ribs during this book? No I didn't, but I am now. So make sure you have a change of underwear handy while reading this book because I guarantee you'll piss yourself. ALSO IM SO HAPPY KEST & BRASTI FINALLY GOT SOME PAGE TIME, but the real show stealers for me were the ladies Darriana and Valiana. Valiana is the most well developed character of the whole series & I love her. I also have a soft spot for Brasti, such a big soft dumb oaf that needs to join my harem 😉. "The problem with Brasti is that he's an idiot. He's handsome and charming, he can outshoot any man or woman with a bow, and he's an idiot." Recommended to all fantasy lovers, this series is definitely for ADULTS and only adults it contains ALOT of rape, violence, torture, swearing & badassery. You can find this review and my other reviews at Booksprens. P.s. I kinda wanna be a Greatcoat when I grow up. ...more |

2.5/5 "Fuck anyone who ever doubts the purpose of daring acts of heroism" Tyrants Throne is the last addition to the Greatcoats Series. I th 2.5/5 "Fuck anyone who ever doubts the purpose of daring acts of heroism" Tyrants Throne is the last addition to the Greatcoats Series. I think it is a very average conclusion to a good series. I found myself writing down all the things I hated about this series instead of the things I loved. So prepared yourself for a ranty review, because let's be honest this novel left a salty taste in my mouth. My main issue with this series is how overhyped it is. Please everyone calm the fuck down, this review is all a matter of personal taste (a very unpopular opinion). I understand majority of people love this series & have it on their favourite shelves. This is quite honestly the reason why I purchased this series, I was so excited to start it, honestly this was one of my most anticipated 'new series of 2017'. So when I finally got around to read book one, it was 'insta meh'. I had high expectations and the book fell flat for me. Don't get me wrong I liked book two & three.. ALOT. But book four was a waste of my time. The main reason why is because it's the same shit that happened throughout the series, I know what your thinking "what is this banshee talking about?", well let me YELL it at you (in a very angry voice). I hate samey sameness, it's one of my biggest peeves, I was tired of hearing the same jokes over and over again, I was also sick of reading the same arguments over and over again, it's gets old quickly. I found the humour in book one refreshing, by book two I was like okay haha.. Book three I thought okay these jokes are becoming annoying, by book four it was INSTA RAGE, stop with the overuse of the same jokes please "oh look at the expression on Falcios face.. he has a plan" or the "oh look Falcio is about to have another speech". It BECAME LAME.. Ok we get it Castell! Falcio is an annoying main character who never shuts up! Luckily Brasti was there to break up the boringness and samey sameness of this novel, If it wasn't for him I would have tapped out at around the 30% mark. So your probably wondering why I gave this book three stars if I hated it so much. Well that ending... It was so goddamn cute, my soul has been touched and my heart broken, atleast the author got one thing right and delivered a beautiful ending. "Because. I. Will. Not. Allow. Them. To. Forget. It" You know for a book about war there wasn't a lot of war going on, just a circulation of the same goddamn arguments over and over again. I love war and politics but this novel felt rushed and unnecessary, I would have preferred the author adding an additional 150 pages to book three and having a conclusion in that novel, but instead he wrote a 600 page book of boringness and fillers. I refuse to even acknowledge this books existence. Because I genuinely liked book 2 and 3. So I'm extremely disappointed. THERE WAS NO BADASSERY. Which is blasphemy. I'm not even done ranting yet & I'm sorry to everyone who enjoyed this novel, but I'm salty. [image] This novel takes off from where book three ended, Falcio (the most annoying character in the universe) is trying to keep the peace in Tristia. The Kings heir Aline is soon to be crowned as queen and return the law to Tristia. But nothing ever goes to plan in this world and the Greatcoats are faced with a few new enemy, it seems like everyone is out to get Falcio. Obviously I understand the authors reluctance to let Falcio just live his life, but seriously how much torture does one man need to endure before he can have his peace, I feel like the author tortures his characters for fun. Don't get me wrong I live for torture in books but it gets to the point in these novels that I just started to roll my eyes. Seriously. I just don't care anymore, I kinda dislike Falcio. I was over his POV, I genuinely hate first person perspective with a passion. So annoying MC + first person perspective = terrible experience for me. I wish the author decided to make this series a multiply POV, that way I would have been less inclined to rant about this novel. Also some of the ways Castell dealt with the 'bad guys' pissed me off, I was all up for this idea "I'd rather rip out that little bitches cunt with my bare hands" . I wanted savagery and got none. But like I said earlier it wasn't all bad. There was a beautiful ending and some of the side characters are truly amazing. I loved the display of friendships throughout the series (even tho Falcio treats the people who love him like shit). A few things I loved about this novel; I love Brasti, I wish he was my friend in real life and the main character of the series, the sweetest cinnamon roll to have ever existed as a fictional character. I love Kest, another character I want to adopt and I also LOVE Darriana, SHE IS THE BEST.. But once again she got 0 page time, I was only here for her and I left feeling disappointed. But other then those things and that ending, this was not a pleasant experience. I just don't care about the story or Falcio anymore. There was a few plot reveals that I saw coming from book one, so they didn't affect me at all. Like I seriously must be a heartless bitch but i just didn't care, I had pretty much 0 feels throughout the entirety of this novel (except the last 50 pages which pulled on my heartstrings a little bit). I do however like the authors writing style but even found a few issues with that, the author uses the most overused unoriginal sentences in book history "I let out the breath I didn't even realise I was holding in". Recommended to all fantasy fans, you will all probably enjoy it more then I did. Ps. Mega fans please don't stab me. I'm actually a precious petal. I'm just feeling salty for wasting a week of my life on this novel. ...more |

4/5 Buddy read with this champ. Okay, so I'm going to start this review by saying this book is a hidden treasure. Seriously, if you haven't read it I su 4/5 Buddy read with this champ. Okay, so I'm going to start this review by saying this book is a hidden treasure. Seriously, if you haven't read it I suggest you do, if that gorgeous cover isn't enough to get you to purchase this book then you deserve a punch in the face. The book is set in a fantasy world in the late 19th century, if your a hardcore fantasy fan and only like EPIC fantasy or grimdark this book will not be for you, it is a low fantasy with only a tiny bit of magic. We follow our main character Emily Marshwic who I absolutely adored. It is a first person POV, which I normally don't enjoy but I feel it suited this story. Chapter one was extremely exciting and I thought I was reading a fast paced book, however chapter two goes back a few years to before the war and I realized I was reading a slow burn fantasy. The first quarter is quite boring but the rest of the novel is absolutely amazing. The story itself is basically about a war, the people of Lascanne were promised it would be a quick fight but it has dragged on for years and the towns have been left devastated by all men young and old being sent to the war, after a few years of the war going on they run out of men for the front line and start recruiting women, our MC Emily who has never even held a gun before is sent to the front line. This is where shit gets real and I swear I couldn't breath the whole time Emily was fighting in the war, it was so devastatingly sad and realistic I think the author did a fantastic job of showing his readers how the war does change people, because Emily is no longer a precious peach or a gentlewoman she is now a killing machine who can handle a gun better then most men. I can't say much more about the plot because everything will be considered a spoiler but I will say it is definitely worth reading, it is breath taking & absolutely beautiful. If your looking for a more detailed review please check out tadiana night owl review. Recommended to all Jane Austen fans as the writing is very similar and everyone who loves a good fiction book about war. ...more |

Another buddy read with my besties at BB&B 5 BRIGHT STARS ★★★★★(ง •̀_•́)ง [image] 'DEATH TO OUR ENEMIES, TRUTH AND COURAGE' [image] ‘I’m coming for yAnother buddy read with my besties at BB&B 5 BRIGHT STARS ★★★★★(ง •̀_•́)ง [image] 'DEATH TO OUR ENEMIES, TRUTH AND COURAGE' [image] ‘I’m coming for you, Lykos,’ Maquin bellowed through cupped hands, ‘and neither demons from the Otherworld nor flesh and blood will stop me.’ Seriously how does one right a review for such an incredible book? This book has changed my life and this review will be emotional mess with a lot of word vomit. This book was so brutal I can't even believe I got through it, do not read this book unless you are a blood thirsty little petal like myself, it is hectic and probably the most brutal/badass book I have ever read in my whole entire life. So here we go for a debut series, I am so impressed. John Gwynne is an amazing author & an amazing person. He had everything in this series; awesome characters, awful bad guys, Giants, wyrms, draigs, wolvens, demons, Angels so basically you name it, I bet it was in the story. He definitely has a fan for life and I'm proud to say I'm one of his biggest fans. Yay. But I must say you have killed me and it hurts so much. ‘This day,’ he cried, shouting now, ‘we will live or die, but whatever the outcome, this will still be the day we avenge ourselves for those we’ve lost, the day we right the wrongs done to us, or die in the trying. It will be a dark day, a bloody day, a proud day, for this is the day of our wrath.’ ‘WRATH,’ the cry went up, ringing and echoing through the branches. ‘WRATH.’ [image] One of my most anticipated books for the year and I was not disappointed at all. and it was basically just one big battle. I literally wish I could give this book one thousand stars, seriously what a fantastic ending to an awesome series, I am so impressed by this book I can't even breath when I think about it. I am going to try my hardest to not burst out crying while writing this review, this book was an emotional rollercoaster to say the least and it did kill me. I have never felt so hurt after reading the last book to a series, normally the last book is rainbows and kittens. This book certainly wasn't, everyone I love either died or was badly hurt, there were points were I couldn't even keep reading because my heart was so heavy and I literally had no more tears left to cry. I have never been so emotionally drained after a book in my life. But in saying that it was FUCKING EPIC & I don't have words to tell everyone how much I LOVED IT. That ending omg, I just want to scream and cry tears of joy/sadness. ‘Yes. So don’t go getting carried away and running off to stab people.’ ‘This is a day for stabbing people.’ This book is definitely going on my favorites shelf, I found this book to be the best of all four and probably my second favorite book ever, so YES I LOVED IT THAT MUCH. I had no issues with the writing, I did however find five spelling mistakes but I'm going to totally let them slip because the story was so amazing, I also didn't like the overuse of the word 'Ach' it annoys me but it was still so brutal and badass. Wrath was extremely fast paced and all questions us readers had were answered. The last 30% of this book is seriously probably one of the best endings to a series I have ever read and the greatest thing I've ever read aswell. I'm not going to go into details because the whole review would be spoilers. ‘The enemy of my enemy,’ Corban shrugged, remembering Balur had said those same words to him in Murias. ‘That’s no answer,’ Ildaer rumbled. ‘What do you fight for, if not Elyon?’ ‘For my kin and loved ones. So that we will not be enslaved or murdered. I’ve seen the Kadoshim, seen only a brief glimpse of what they would do, and it is terrible. I fight against that. I fight for my freedom.’ I love all the character development in this book, especially Corban. I honestly can't believe how strong his character has become. All he cares about is his friends and family and I love that. I found Corban less childish in this book and feel like he finally fits the boots of the Bright Star. The warrior’s face filled her mind, beaten and scarred. Proud. Fierce. Maquin & Fidele, I don't want to say to much but I love them so much. They are my favorite book couple ever and Maquin is one of my favorite male characters ever, my old wolf <3 he did a complete 360 in this book and turned into a fucking psycho I loved it so much. I could literally write my whole review just on Maquin. Like seriously how many warriors can kill everything and everyone even with their bare hands.. None except for my old wolf.Ahh Maquin *dreamy sigh then bursting into tears* In half a dozen strokes of his sword four men were dead or bleeding out on the floor. Maquin screamed wordless joy as the battle-rage took him and he strode through them like death itself, parrying, chopping, stabbing. He left one of his swords stuck in an enemy’s spine, drew a knife and fought on . My favorite part of the whole book; *heart eyes* You are precious to me,’ she finished, her courage fading at the last, her eyes dropping away. A silence settled on them. The chattering of the stream, the sounds of Veradis’ warband making ready for their expedition, all faded around her. Maquin moved, suddenly close to her, a handspan between them, and her heart was racing. He leaned closer and kissed her lips, a soft caress. ‘I came back from death for you,’ he said, his voice a whispered tremor. ‘For me it was always forever, however long that may be. And those words you just spoke, they are the greatest gift I’ve ever been given. They are written upon my heart and soul.’ ‘Then let me give you another gift,’ she said, smiling, her heart soaring, grabbing his leather jerkin Thanks for melting my heart and making me cry tears of blood (pun intended) Coralen impressed me throughout the series and it's safe to say she's so badass. Cywen is another character who impressed me from beginning to end. She's so fierce, passionate, caring & badass. She's the whole package. I thought I felt sorry for Nathair ... Turns out I didn't haha. 'Nathair considered his allies. A drunken pirate. A demon-possessed attraction to flies and a half-burned Kadoshim. How have I sunk so low?' Brina was so amazing in this book, she's an incredible character that I will never forget and Craf <33 he was so polite in this book lol. 'Brina, are you sober?’ ‘What?’ ‘You don’t usually appear to like anyone, is all.’ ‘I like Storm,’ Brina said and poked him with a bony finger. ‘Make the most of it,’ she added, ‘I doubt it’ll last.’ There was some EPIC battles in this book, like some of the best I've ever read in my life. Move over George RR Martin you are no longer king of writing battles that title goes to John Gywnne now :) If you guys wanna no more I suggest reading the series because my lips are sealed on this one :D Right now I'm just going to go and ugly cry for eternity. Yep seriously. Bye. [image] ...more |

4.5 BLACK FEATHER STARS ✺✺✺✺✺ Another buddy read with my chums at BB&B 4.5 BLACK FEATHER STARS ✺✺✺✺✺ Another buddy read with my chums at BB&B
[image] Another fantastic book by Jen Williams, well done Jen & thank you for writing the Copper Cat Trilogy, I enjoyed every second spent reading it & can't wait to read it again. I can honestly say that this book is a very special treat and not only this book the whole entire trilogy is awesome. I loved reading them all but I enjoyed this one a tiny bit more. I felt it had action from the very start and was really fast paced. The others were the same but the first two slowed down in the middle of the story. This one didn't, the action didn't stop. I felt sick/nervous/scared while reading it, it was fucking intense to say the least. But I was happy with the outcome and ending. A few times in this book there was some "omg" moments that left you feeling like shit but that's how good books make you FEEL. It was definitely a great conclusion to the series. I didn't have any issues with the writing, it was well written and the plot was well thought out, interesting & moved smoothly. I have now adopted Wydrin's vocabulary because I love her so much so Fuck me sideways that was a bloody great book. It had a bloody great happy ending so go read it you bastards xD “I am the Copper Cat of Crosshaven, she told herself. I am the daughter of Devinia the Red. I can take this bitch.” I didn't think Jen could think of anything else to put in her novels like she has given us everything good from zombies, dragons, mages, giant spiders, mountain monsters, sea monsters, crazy gods, demons, Griffins haha you name she's thought of it but this book is about something else I absolutely adore.. TIME TRAVEL. I loved it ! I didn't see it coming and I absolutely enjoyed reading it. I really wish this wasn't the end of the series. But it's safe to say I'm a fan of Jen Williams forever now and can't wait for her to release more books ! [image] I'm so sad to be ending my journey with the black feather three, I don't know if I want to do a happy dance or ugly cry. I truly love my three babies and hate that I have finished this trilogy. I WANT MORE “Sebastian’s blood soared with the silver tide.” The characters in this story were amazing, I had some issues in the beginning with Sebastian, he acted like a sooky teenage boy and it disgusted me. I understand he was heartbroken but he made me so angry with how childish he was being, but I'm glad he came back to being my precious cinnamon roll. Dragon rider and full time badass gay knight. Haha so I liked the decisions he made at the end and I'm so happy for him. Oster was amazing and I ship him & Seb so much. [image] Frith is a character that really grew on me throughout the series I didn't like him very much. After reading this book I love Frith so much he was so consistent throughout this story and I ended up loving him so much, I love his new magic and thought it was very unique. I think I liked him in the last book but not as much as I like him now. Lord Aaron Frith of Blackwood <3 Wydrin is my favorite female character ever, I love her so much ! She is so badass & outspoken, I can honestly say I've never liked a character as much as I like Wydrin. She is the breath of fresh air for this series she makes every terrible situation funny. [image] “I saw her murder and eat people, and she would not have stopped, not until every human was a dusty black mark on a rock somewhere. I saw that, while you were sitting out here in your commune for weirdos.” Her one on one fights in this book were absolutely amazing. She is so hectic. Stronger than a man and swears like a sailor xD “Somehow she had lost Glassheart too, but the Tower Gauntlets were there, lying amongst the broken glass. Stumbling slightly she snatched them up and slid them over her bare hands. There was a sensation, like plunging your hands into hot water, and she made a pair of fists in front of her. The gauntlets were over-sized but beautiful, and she grinned, tasting blood in her mouth. STOP READING! SPOILERS BELOW FOR THE WHOLE SERIES; “Don’t lose my dagger. I’m very fond of it.’ This book gave me the FEELS, Frith & Wydrin's romance was so heart melting. Seriously I don't know when I turned into a cheesy loving romance kinda person, I have never liked romance but lately it has been melting my heart.. Especially Frith & Wydrin, seriously they are my favorite ever book couple. I can't get enough of them. Their romance didn't overpower the plot at all but it was there and it was beautiful. “Yes. Well. I can say now that I’m really glad you weren’t stabbed to death by that bitch, because I fucking love you, Lord Aaron Frith.” [image] I recommend this book to everyone who loves Epic fantasy & everyone else :D ...more |

5/5 "And so it goes, thought Clay. Life was funny, and fickle, and often cruel. Sometimes the unworthy went on living, while those who deserved5/5 "And so it goes, thought Clay. Life was funny, and fickle, and often cruel. Sometimes the unworthy went on living, while those who deserved better were lost." This was a buddy read with everyone. Well, I’ll be a kobold’s cock ring, this book was so incredible. Kings of the Wyld made the inner rocker in me want to go to a heavy metal concert and headbang until I get a headache because I'm hardcore. That's seriously how good this book is. I was meant to be in a 35 year book slump but my slump lasted approx one second and vanished on page one of this novel. It was love on page one. I just love this authors writing style so much and believe it or not THIS IS A DEBUT NOVEL! I still can't believe it, this author is so talented. I loved everything about this book especially the humour. "I know the whole ‘gorgons turning men to stone’ thing is a myth,” he said quietly, “but I’m hard as a rock right now.” It was hilarious, I understand this book wouldn't be everyone's humour, it was pretty goofy however for me I was actually laughing out loud, the inner goof in me went into berserker mode. The book is not only humorous but it also is very emotional, I cried at some parts. You know the author is extremely talented when your laughing at one sentence then crying like an ugly savage clutching your heart because of the feels the next. This book is totally a special hidden gem and should be on every monster lover, rock music lover & video game lovers shelf! There is so many references to Rock n Roll (lucky I got most of them because let's face it I'm a total headbanger. like you will find me fighting people in the mosh pit) & it also has a lot of video game references mainly D&D and Final Fantasy (0 knowledge in this compartment) but it didn't affect my reading experience because I googled all the monsters 🤓. It's just a huge monster mash. "What Clay mistook for the mating cry of some forest creature turned out to be Moog’s quiet cackle." The story is written in a singular third person perspective, which I found refreshing and I actually really enjoyed the way the story was told. I feel like all characters got enough page space and I had time to fall inlove with every member of Saga. I really enjoyed the plot of the story aswell, basically it's about a band of five men. Not your traditional band of rockers but instead a band of mercenaries who hunt and kill monster, Saga once the toughest band alive. broken up 19 years later, now the members are washed up old, fat and drunk (I imagine smelly aswell) legends of the past. An old band member shows up on Clay Coopers doorstop begging to get the band back together to save his daughters life, for one more tour across the dangerous monster filled Heartwyld. This book reminded me of a battle of the bands kinda set up with its heavy musical influence. Every character played their part in the band, Gabriel/Golden Gabe = main singer/front man. Gabe once the prettiest one of the band. Now a tired old man. His an old badass with an even older cool sword. Clay Cooper/Slowhand = Bassist. our main character and the spine of the band, like the only thing I can think to say about clay is "his a good man". Matrick/Matty Skulldrummer = drummer. One of my favourite characters. Matrick was once a savage street brawler, who named his knifes after the first prostitutes who had a threesome with him. (Roxy and Grace). Now a fat father of five kids, who he didn't unzip his pants to make. Arcandius Moog = Keyboard. A gay wizard who wears onesie pajamas. My absolute favourite character, I honestly love him so much. You know Moogs my favourite character when during a fight he throws honey ham hocks and hard cheese out of a magical hat. Ganelon = Lead Guitar. So obviously our badass hot guy, who likes to shred. His still the exact same as he was. He hasn't changed one little bit in 19 years. Ganelon is the bands professional killer & quite possibility the reason why the book washed me into the abyss of badassery. [image] Image found on authors blog. Artist is Mike Solomon. Aside from the fact that the book is in a series, it reads like a standalone, this book concludes the story of Saga, I'm unsure if they will be featured in the future novels however I'm so happy with their conclusion. But kinda want more Saga? Anyway the plot itself is pretty much a slow burn, the humorous tone of the story kept me reading and happy until the action began. Definitely a fantastic debut novel and I'm looking forward to the authors future books. Especially because Rose was the queen of badassery, so I can't wait for her story. One thing that didn't impress me was there was ham hate contained in this book. HAM HATE. "Ham.” "Ham,” the woman growled, as though uttering the name of a bitter enemy." I know what your thinking. Why am I getting worked up over ham? Well I'll tell you why it's because I am a ham enthusiast. This story needs to be read by every epic fantasy fan out there! Don't dismiss it as cliche as soon as you hear it has monsters, because the author definitely puts a spin on the whole monster theme. Definitely to be read by all gamers & music fans, plus it's front cover is absolutely needed on every shelf. It's so badass. P.s the whole time reading this story I was just expecting Alice Cooper to conjure himself out of the book and start singing poison to me. [image] 😂 Seriously this added to the humor because I literally imagined saga like a glam band. P.s.s. Everytime I look at the cover and see the quote "the boys are back in town" the song by Thin Lizzy plays on repeat in my head for hours. It's actually driving me mad. 4.5 STARS ✩✩✩✩ Buddy read with my homies at BB&B
This book gave me the feels & made me want to do a happy dance after finish 4.5 STARS ✩✩✩✩ Buddy read with my homies at BB&B
This book gave me the feels & made me want to do a happy dance after finishing it. So here's my happy dance, I kinda wanna sing "I loooove everything I l-l-love everything I do" while doing it! [image] Okay so I'm going to start this review off by talking about my rating, so I absolutely loved this book.. Why didn't I give it 5 stars than? Well firstly it isn't one of my 'favorites', I can't compare this book to some other books I've read this year because they were just unbelievable but in saying that this book has three of my favorite characters ever. The story is awesome it just didn't blow my mind! From now on I'm saving my five stars for those books that change my life in some way and this book just didn't do that for me. I had my issues with this book, even tho it is much better then the first I did struggle a tiny bit while reading it, I'm not sure if it is because I've been super busy lately or if I'm in abit of a reading slump. But with all that aside I enjoyed this book, I loved nearly everything about it. The authors writing skills have improved so much since book one, I am truly impressed. The first book was abit choppy and hard to read because it was a bunch of short stories put into one big story, so a lot of the time it just didn't add up. In this book you don't get that! Thank god, it actually reads like a normal novel. The story itself is amazing and really unique and different, the author certainly hasn't ripped anyone's ideas off, it is a super original fun read and guess what it is totally fucking weird... But in a good way! IT is a great refreshing read for all fantasy lovers. Okay so in my opinion this book was super creepy, like some moments I was scared... It had demon possession, ghosts, dragons, zombies, mountain creatures, spiders, centipedes... So anything epic.. This book has it! [image] "He made a pact with a demon, and through that made his greatest and most terrible works. He crafted the Edeian, as well as wielding the powers of a mage. But one day he asked to see the true form of the demon, for he had grown fond of it. When he saw its real face, he went insane." The shape of the prophet was very still now, and the clacking of the bones had stopped. Nuava swallowed hard, wondering if she should keep talking." It was terrifying, they said, and ugly beyond anything mortal. They said that if he were a normal man, he would have been struck blind aswell. They said-" I found this story wasn't as fun as the first one, some really sad shit happened and I did cry more then once while reading it. I cried at the sad parts and I also found myself crying because I didn't want it to end, I could read about the black feather three for eternity.. Haha. But even if it was grimmer & a lot darker then the first it had a lot of relief; it had funny moments, pure badassery, romance & a lot of fun times for the three besties (the comradeship is actually amazing in this book, it feels so real and unforced) Okay so now I'm going to talk about my babies and there could be some MAJOR spoilers so don't read any further unless you've actually read the book. (view spoiler)[ So let's start with Lord Aaron Frith. In book one I found his character frustrating and selfish, but in this book you totally see a different side to him and guess what? HE TURNED INTO A FUCKING BADASS - don't get me wrong in book one he had his badass moments but he was an ass, in this book all of his selfishness is nearly gone (when I say nearly I mean it he only had one moment in this book where I questioned him as a character) he killed a man to activate his machine.. An innocent man by that but I get it he is a character who is driven by revenge and yes he gave the guys wife a pension and looked after his kids but it was still a shock, I'm glad he felt bad about his actions even if he is doing something for the 'greater good' it still sucks to hurt innocents and it sucks to be the reader and feel guilty! But with all that aside he really grew on me and I'm pretty much inlove with Lord Frith now he is our little princeling. Oh and I got my dream ending at the end of this book so Bravo Jen William's for giving me the feels.
Sir Sebastian was fucking great in this book, I loved the flashbacks to Seb's past, it made me cry... Poor Seb. The whole thing with him seeing his mother and her turning her back on him actually broke my fucking heart like my poor cinnamon roll! He doesn't deserve that shit he is truly an awesome guy and lives to save the innocents. I really loved Dallen & Seb, I honestly wanted more but didn't get it. The development with Seb and the brood sisters was my favorite part of this story. I love the fact that very one in the book mistook Seb's kindness.. There was one point where someone was like "your too soft to kill me" next minute he has a sword through his throat... Don't underestimate my baby.. He is a born killer!!! Seb is a peach and I feel super protective over him he is probably one of my favorite characters ever, he is so beautiful :') “You are too merciful. You are the good one, the honourable one. You would not—’ The brood army; holy fuckery... I love them so much, my green lizard babies!!! Everything they do makes me smile, I'm going to contradict myself and say that even when they killed innocents I didn't really care, I know what your thinking I just bad mouthed Frith for killing innocents but that is different he isn't half dragon! I just love them so much, I found myself fan girling over them and crying because I just can't get enough! Ephemeral is seriously the best ever <333 Wydrin.... I LOVE HER!!! She is my baby she is literally my favorite female character ever, the things she says has me laughing out loud, she is a total badass and I love her so much !!! If anyone thinks they know badass females characters, you haven't met Wydrin yet... She is the definition of badass, I couldn't ask for more from a character. She is my lethal petal, there was a moment in this book where she was afraid to show her true feelings.. When you have a strong character like Wydrin that's what you expect, she is very realistic and very relatable for me. Oh and did I mention how much I love her... LOL! Oh and her overuse of the word bastard was amazing! “They tore around another corner, and now they were very close. Wydrin could see that the long, horn-like barbs on the centipede’s rear end were flexing at them aggressively, and there was some sort of dark fluid oozing from the pointed ends. Joah demonsworn was a worm and the cruelest most powerful character I have ever come across, I really truly hated him so much !!!!! Beezcavar is one of the most terrifying characters ever, why won't he just die? Lol (hide spoiler)] There she was, standing in the dark, lit in shades of grey and orange by the moon and their dying fire; a girl, taller than he remembered, wearing leathers and furs, her long brown hair brushed back from her face and secured into a braid. Her eyes were filled with blood, and her hands were red to the wrists. Who would I recommend this too; everyone! So go read it people, you won't be disappointed, it's a warm, happy (sometimes) awesome read & if you don't I will throw it at you & it will hurt because its a big ass book. [image] ...more |

The title is very accurate and this book will RUIN you. You have been warned. 'Two for vengeance. One for love.’ [image] This part of the review does not contain *spoilers* but could have some cussing This series really means a lot to me, I literally love so many things about it. This book was definitely my favorite out of the three but I do need to mention that I hated that ending. It honestly came close to ruining the ending for me and this series but I will not be stubborn just because of my broken heart and will continue reading books by this author plus the rest of this book was awesome. I loved the character development and adored the world building I must say after the last book I will definitely miss The banished lands and our friends from there.. I am upset at the author for that ending and a few other things but I am willing to forgive him for letting most of my other favorite characters survive. I swear I will die a little inside if any more of my faves die. [image] Ruin was a brilliant book that I really enjoyed :D it was filled with pure badassery and a lot of EPIC battles. This book actually has some of my favorite battles. Seriously some of the battles are so detailed and good I felt myself squirming just by reading them. This book was mind blowing, fantastic, epic and just simply a great read. Dammit now I have to wait for the next book !! "Corban, I’m scared," Cywen said. He gripped her hand and squeezed. "So am I," This is exactly how I felt while reading Ruin.. I was scared. I was scared and nervous because I know the author doesn't mind killing off his characters - this is the thing that makes me most nervous.. After reading two HUGE books that are both 700 plus words, it makes it hard to lose the characters you have grown to love. John Gywnne does a phenomenal job of making you have a lot of feelings about his characters, even makes you feel sympathy for the bad guys at times because his characters are so deep and well written. Most characters I love and by love I mean can't cope if anything bad happens to them, and everything bad happens to the characters I love so the whole book I pretty much couldn't cope and was close to hyperventilating. John Gywnne definitely does not go easy on his characters.. They always seem to die in the most horrible way possible, which is terrifying if you are an emotional reader like me lol. I felt like I was unable to devour this book due to being terrified of its brutalness towards my babies, sometimes I was actually nervous to continue lol. ‘It is a serious thing,’ Laith said, ‘taking a life. A sad thing, I think, though better to take another’s than to lose your own. Many of my kin consider the thorns a badge of honour. I suppose it is that as well.’ ‘It is,’ Cywen said. ‘But something can be many things, or can mean many things, not just be confined to the one. Like us.’ Laith looked at her intently [image] ****WARNING!! The rest of the review CONTAINS *SPOILERS FOR BOOK 1, 2 & 3 SO BEWARE* so only read if you have read the books or do not plan to read the books ever.. Please don't say I spoiled you, you have been warned :) I actually expected the second half of the book to go the complete opposite way to what it actually did it has really shocked me. It all started going sour for me when Jaels warband reached Gramms hold. I knew it was going to be bad but I didn't think it could have been as bad as it was.. I didn't expect a man to be impaled on a wall with a knife through his wrists then have his belly eaten by a bear while he was still alive, WHILE HIS SON WATCHED. Now don't get me wrong I love sick shit, i thought Ramsay Bolton was a bad guy but honestly he doesn't have shit on the characters in this book.. Flaying & castrating.. Pfft that's child's play compared to the torture scenes in this book. This book actually gave me chills at times I was CRINGING through most of it, but in saying that I loved it haha. Corban was like a different person in this book, his character development over the series has really impressed me. Like I have said in previous reviews he has gone from crybaby who needed his sister to bash his bullies to bad ass warrior but now he has turned into something completely different.. He is now a worthy leader in my opinion he is still my cinnamon roll but he has balls now and is a great leader to the people who are following him. At the start of this book I found him annoying now I think he is brave and definitely the best character in this series now. The twist that Meical reveal towards the end was huge and I really don't know how this character will come back from it so I certainly look forward to this particular character in the next book. I'm also excited to see how Corban & Coralen interact in the next book. I feel like they would make a great couple and I would adore them together. [image] There was a part in this book were Coralen was mad at Corban for not acknowledging her kiss, her anger made the relationship feel real to me. ‘I am not your enemy,’ he repeated, ‘and I do not wish to die whilst training on the weapons court.’ ‘Sorry,’ she muttered. She’d been first on the weapons court this morning, expecting to see Corban, fully intending to give him as many bruises as was physically possible during a morning’s training. When he had not turned up it made her angrier, her only option to take it as a personal insult. He is avoiding me. Akar had been the first unfortunate man who had asked her if she wished to spar with him. This is not working. I need to see Corban and tell him what I think of him. What I think of a man who gets kissed by a woman and then avoids that woman for a ten-night. And especially when that woman is me. Me, who’s punched and kicked and bitten a score of men that tried to kiss me, and now . . . She screamed internally. Coralen strode from the court, slamming her practice blade into a wicker barrel as she left. Coralen is another favorite of mine. She is fierce, passionate, sassy and a weapon in herself. She would have to be one of the most skilled characters in the book and she is female.. Yay ! She has impressed me from the start and continues to do so. She has certainly claimed Corban as her own lol. The new friendship being forged between Cywen and Coralen is amazing, it feels real & genuine and I love it. ‘What would you like in return?’ Coralen asked her. ‘A trade.’ ‘Teach me how to use that,’ Cywen said, pointing to Coralen’s sword. ‘All right then,’ Coralen said and held her arm out. They gripped and shook forearms. I like her a bit more, already. Every Time I think of Cywen I smile, I love her! She is my favorite character in the whole series, she has been from book one and will continue to stay that way. Her character growth has impressed me so much and I am so proud of the resilient woman she has become. I totally felt for Cywen through the whole book, her feeling not included made me sad. I really appreciated what Brina did for Cywen making her feel needed and thought the growth between their relationship was beautiful :') I feel like nothing would go smoothly without Brina lol, Brina intrigues me, I love her but feel there is more to Brina then we know so far. This is another character I'm excited to see in the next installment. I'm so glad Craf has survived as long as he has he is the funniest thing in this book, hands down, he amuses me so much. Veradis has completely changed my mind on him again. I hated him through most of the book, again. But loved him the last half. He has definitely become a character I have a lot of feels for. I would be shattered if anything was to happen to him in the next book. Camlin went through hell in this book, I felt so sorry for him but it made me love him even more. I really enjoy camlin's character throughout this book he has been amazing from the first book and is even better now. He has become so loyal, his loyalty to Edana is swoon worthy. I think they have feelings for each other and would love to see a relationship between the two. Edana is another character I have started to really love, she has developed into a strong honorable leader, she is also turning into a fantastic warrior which I love ! She's not weak anymore, yay ! Maquin is my guy. I love this character so much. He melts my heart.. Seriously! He gives me the feels and he is so special he needs one thousand and two cuddles, John Gywnne has been cruel to my precious & it has killed me :'( 'In the Pit I was called old wolf, the only name I've gone by for a good long while. I am a trained killer. Have become that which I hate I still don't really have words to describe I feel about what this character has gone through. It makes me cringe & gives me anxiety everytime I read a page of his POV. I was close to hyperventilating and on the verge of ugly crying through this whole entire part in the book. I swear there was one part where I held my breath and I couldn't even keep reading but couldn't stop, lol. I was so glad for the romance in this book (even tho it didn't last many chapters, it was still so good) it melted my heart and gave me the feels big time. She has reminded me what it is like to be a man, not just a trained killer. That feels good, too [image] Fidele & Maquin are my ship and will forever be my ship. I fell inlove with the both of them while they did, it really felt like a real relationship to me not forced and I absolutely adored them together. (view spoiler)[ I’ll not give you up,’ she said fiercely. ‘I returned from death to life for you. Rumours aren’t going to scare me' Maquin grinned. (hide spoiler)] I will never ever forget my queen and my pit fighter these two will go down as two of my favorite characters ever. In the first book I didn't even notice either of them and now I'm saying this. LOL ! I'm so nervous for the next book if anything happens to my ship I will probably sink with it. [image] I feel like I don't hate Nathair as much as I did considering what happen to him in this book, I feel like he is just another pawn in the game to the g-ds. But in saying that I can't wait to see him die. Calidus is the reason for all my hate now. I hate him more then anything, he is literally a demon in every possible way. What happened in this book with him mortified me and I can't wait to read what happens next lol. I did feel sorry for Nathair when(view spoiler)[Calidus and uthas cutting the lock from nathairs head to control him. My sympathy for nathair has risen and now I actually feel sorry for him, he honestly thought he was the bright star & now he is not. I also think calidus has just taken over everything even with Nathair still controlling himself he is scared of calidus now, I can't believe some of the choices he has made by himself and the ones with calidus controlling him. (hide spoiler)] A few likes/dislikes: (view spoiler)[ °what happen to alycon was not ok. But it was a great twist in the story, I knew they were controlling him somehow. °the duel ch 80 - was so epic, one of the best story battles ever in my opinion! I was on the edge of my seat. °when the giant do the thorn tattoo everytime they take a life. °storm and buddais Cubs are so cute °what happen to storm is NOT OK °that ending tore my heart out, I hated it so much! 5/5 “Revenge is a bittersweet fruit that leaves the foul aftertaste of regret.” THIS BOOK WAS IMPECCABLE. Like how dare it be so perfect! 5/5 “Revenge is a bittersweet fruit that leaves the foul aftertaste of regret.” THIS BOOK WAS IMPECCABLE. Like how dare it be so perfect! Seriously it gave me all the FEELS possible. Like I need a feel doctor, up in here to fix this shit, this book made me melt into a pile of goo, I HATE ROMANCE WITH A PASSION. I'm like the love grinch, I'm a dedicated, pure and total romance hater. I hate all soppy shit & secretly hate all things cute. However this book was so terribly cute that i need to grow my nails long and rake them down my own face. I loved everything (especially the romance). I loved Royces changes. I loved how Hadrian stayed the same. I loved Arista's development. I loved Myron from the beginning. Favourite Quote and of course it came from Myron "Life is only precious if you wish it to be.’ I look at it like the last bite of a wonderful meal—do you enjoy it, or does the knowledge that there is no more to follow make it so bitter that you would ruin the experience?” But most of all I loved the bromance, yep folks I finally get it and am currently the driver of the hype train because this series is amazing. I genuinely love a slow burn fantasy and this series is exactly that. First book imo was pretty average, second book was pretty good it was slow and I felt something was missing, book three was exceptional. It had the missing thing and that was emotion, I was finally emotionally attached to the characters, I immediately saw the bromance and I was gobsmacked at how much I loved it's HEA ending. Even the romance gave me the sniffles, because it was so annoyingly adorable. Oh and did I mention the romance? (Yep 3 times already). So it's confirmed folks I'm not a weirdo and I finally discovered what a gem this series actually is. Each book gets better and better. [image] The writing is sensational and I think Michael J Sullivan is extremely talented. One thing I really loved in this book was the things that happened in the characters past was all a big build up to the end, I'm so glad Michael managed to tie everything together and I thought he did a fantastic job of keeping me entertained throughout the series. Looking forward to reading the authors other books. A satisfying end to a wonderful and FUN series. Recommended to all fantasy lovers, I also think this would be a great introduction for someone wanting to read epic fantasy. One last thing.. The dedication page destroyed me;

4/5 Stars I really enjoyed reading Rise of Empire, I definitely enjoyed it more then Theft of Swords. This book certainly picked up the pace from book 4/5 Stars I really enjoyed reading Rise of Empire, I definitely enjoyed it more then Theft of Swords. This book certainly picked up the pace from book one, seriously interesting things actually happened in this book. The plot was fast paced and stimulating. I believe there was a fair bit of badassery going on. I didn't even notice the weird emotionless POV much this time, like yeah it was obviously still there, [image] but it's more bearable because I've finally warmed up to the characters. This still isn't my favourite 'bromance' ever, I really like Royce and Hadrian and enjoy their banter. But for me the bromance just isn't there yet, like I feel I'm missing something. ARE WE READING THE SAME BOOK?!? [image] Once again this book is two novels in one. This time around we get Nyphron Rising and The Emerald Storm. All stories are a continuation of each other with a connected plot, so it flows really well. Michael J Sullivan is a fantastic writer, his books are easy to read, his a great vivid world-builder and its definitely a humorous and fun read. I found the pacing better in this instalment then Theft of Swords, the overall storyline was once again unoriginal but good. In my opinion this book was a little more my cup tea. Theft of Swords was very "classic" fantasy, it didn't have much violence. Whereas this book Rise of Empire was a little more dark, we got to read about the darker side to Royce, Hadrian and Arista. I really enjoyed the overall vibe in this book, we witnessed a few brutal barbaric acts like floggings and the fight scenes which might I add were next level to what I saw in book one, they were fantastic, a certain fight scene was so amazing, I was on the edge of seat while reading it, while having heart palpitations, so yeah that was pretty fun. This book was also more complex then the first, it had a few major twists, aswell as castle intrigue, court politics, love and relationship secrets, *sounds of amazement* finally getting some good stuff out of Michael J Sullivan's novels. Its definitely safe to say I'm a fan of The Riyria and want more! I can't wait to finish the series. [image] Seriously I love Arista so much. I just low key wish I was her so I could turn people into frogs. I didn't like Nyphron Rising as much as The Emerald Storm, only because it wasn't as action packed, other then that it was a really good book. I liked it a lot. I love Arista so was happy to have a story with her POV, as one of the main POV's. This story is set a year after the last book, and is basically about the beginning of a war. Hadrian and Royce are now both retired but go on their 'last mission' (they're always saying, every mission is their last lol). Arista sets off on a mission to save her brothers empire and takes Hadrian and Royce with her. The story was thrilling and engaging enough, I just wanted more action?! Luckily The Emerald Storm delivered me a lot of violence so I'm now a happy camper. My favorite out of the two stories was definitely The Emerald Storm, it was so EPIC. This book is what I was waiting for, seriously thank you Michael J Sullivan for finally showing me your potential as an author, this book definitely exceeded my expectations and I loved it! Seriously, it was so bloody good. It was your typical action packed Pirate story, we follow Royce and Hadrian as they go on a journey to find an object. Of course the journey doesn't go to plan and they find themselves in a deadly location. The rumours are definitely true folks, this series gets better with each book. The twists and reveals at the end were mind blowing and IT ACTUALLY HAD AWESOME FIGHT SCENES. This was an action packed, fun, exhilarating book that I absolutely loved reading and I just need to fangirl over Hadrian, Royce & Arista. Seriously they are all awesome. I really missed Myron this story but found Hadrian's POV to be my relief this time around. I really love Hadrian now, he is so amazing, clumsy, funny, dopey and he is very badass and handsome. Definitely swoon worthy, when he withdrew his Spadone sword shit got hectic and a lot of people died(yayayayaya). But I can't chose if I like him more then Royce or not. Royce definitely had a few standout badass moments in these books and I have a new level of respect for him. "Oh, sir, you have no idea what Royce is like. I'll grant you that his association with Hadrian Blackwater has tempered him greatly. Twelve years with that idealistic dreamer have made him practically human, but I know him. I know what lurks beneath. I've seen things that make even my hardened heart shudder. Get his anger up, and you'll unleash a demon that no one can control. Believe me, he's like that and so much more. Nothing is beyond him" I recommend this book to all fantasy lovers. Although I must say if you are looking for a blood bath or a high violence fantasy, then keep on looking this is a more humorous soft fantasy, with classic themes. Definitely a fun filled read that I'm sure most fantasy fans would love. Nyphron Rising - 3.5/5 The Emerald Storm - 4.5/5 Total Rating - 4/5 ...more |

So first thing I noticed after purchasing theft of swords, was the hideous cover.. Yuck! I hate it. Seriously the description in the book of what Royce & Hadrian look like is nothing like the cover, for one Hadrian is a gorgeous blondie, why for the love of God does he look like a bald cretin on the cover? Seriously the cover did leave a sour taste in my mouth. Apart from the ugly cover i also hated the name of the book, "Theft of Swords" its just so un creative and blah. So basically in this one book you get two different stories "The Crown Conspiracy" & "Avempartha" which ironically are both much better names then the actual title that was chosen. Anyway I didn't hate reading this book it was well written and had a good plot, it just had so many issues, like for one the strange POV that it is told in. My friend Petrik said it is omniscient third person POV. Okay don't get me wrong i did end up getting used to the POV it just struck me as strange and annoying. It was seriously like reading a script for a movie, there was 0 emotion. But what I hated most about this POV is it prevented me from having insta-love for the characters, I didn't no what they were thinking or feeling, so it felt cold to me and I can't possibly love characters if I can't dissect their mind. In my personal opinion the main characters were kinda lame in the beginning I just didn't understand the bromance, they spoke a lot about things that happened in the past to give them a badass reputation, like hello am I missing something? Seriously where even was the bromance or badassery? Also don't do what I did and start your Riyeria journey with Theft of Sword, I suggest reading the prequel first, so you actually understand the bromance. In the plot there was 0 action, I'm blood thirsty and there's no blood. Like I literally didn't see any badassery from either of the two Main Characters in The Crown Conspiracy or any good proper fights in either book *snorts* boring, [image] I feel book two did pick up the pace and was more interesting but it was still just cliche and abit boring. I was patiently waiting through a whole book to be wowed and I wasn't once. Yep not once.. Differently not a favorite. And to be honest I couldn't give a shit about the 'bromance', I didn't really get their 'inside' jokes either. It is nowhere near as good as Wax and Wayne (Mistborn era 2) bromance for me. But it was a good book, I did smile while reading it and loved two of the background characters. The idea of two unlikely heroes saving the day, a thief and a trained killer, was one of my favorite aspects of the story. The Crown Conspiracy didn't interest me until the last few chapters and I got a taste of some action (finally), also it was pretty much focused on Alric and I did not like Alric. The plot was about Hadrian and Royce being framed for the Kings murder then escaping and kidnapping Alric the heir to the throne and they go on an adventure. Sounds awesome but my personal opinion is it was pretty boring. So to my surprise I liked Avempartha, I literally had so much fun reading it, the banter improved in the story aswell as plot pacing. It had a very typical fantasy plot with a monster and a extremely cliche ending, but it was hilarious. The handless wizard made me laugh, 'If this hast been done to language, I fear to know the fate of all else.' Royce really grew on me, I loved finding out about his past! He is so cool and smart. I love how he is always grumpy one of my favorite parts “I hate dwarves.” Arista was a favorite from the start, I love strong females. I also did start to like Hadrian he is just abit soft for my liking, honestly for a big badass mercenary with a killer past, he was pretty boring. I just wanted him to bash someone and prove how good he was with weapons like his reputation says, sad to say it folks, there was no badassery from this guy. The only part I really enjoyed was when he was teaching weapons to a certain someone. I did however find Hadrian to be quite funny at times and I can relate to being pretty dopey and accident prone, one of my favorite parts, "You might want to clear it some. A single stone can ruin a night’s sleep. I ought to know; it seems whenever I sleep outside, I always end up with a stone under the small of my back.” This is me also and this is why I hate camping. [image] Time to talk about my favorites, Myron, seriously I LOVE HIM. He was so funny, i swear I only continued reading book one because of him and the things he would say. So basically Myron is a forgotten child who was sent to a monastery. He hasn't ever really been outside, cries over burnt books (totally relatable If there was a house fire here I would grab my son and my books.) he has also never seen a horse or a woman before. So as you can imagine he was an interesting travel partner. One of my favorite parts, "This is a beautiful place,” Myron declared, his eyes darting about the room. “There is so much going on, so many conversations. Speaking at meals wasn’t allowed at the abbey, so it was always deathly silent. Of course, we got around that rule by using sign language. It used to drive the abbot crazy because we were supposed to be focusing on Maribor, but there are times when you but there are times when you simply have to ask someone to pass the salt.” He is talking about a pub lol. I will continue reading this series as I'm interested in seeing how it will progresses. I have been told the books improve with each one so I'm excited to find out. I recommend this to people who are not looking for a blood bath and instead would prefer a nice fantasy read with a HEA ending. Also there is no swearing and basically no violence, this could be a great introduction into Fantasy for younger readers (15+). If these were two separate books I would have rated as follows; The Crown Conspiracy - 3/5 Avempartha - 4/5 [image] ...more |

1000/5 "The Age of Kings is dead . . . and I have killed it." [image] I.AM.DEAD I haven't had the FEELS like this while reading a book in a su 1000/5 "The Age of Kings is dead . . . and I have killed it." [image] I.AM.DEAD I haven't had the FEELS like this while reading a book in a such a long time. I swear, I had the feeling I had when I first read mistborn.. wait okay, maybe not that amount of feels but it was close. I love when you find a book you can't put down! Every chance I got to read this book I would drop all my other priorities. Even eating! This is my favourite read of 2017 so far. [image] "He had to do it the old fashioned way. One bullet at a time. No, he realized. He was Taniel Two-Shot. He'd take two at once." So this book is the debut novel from Brandon Sandersons writing student Brian McClellan. I definitely saw the similarities in the writing style & honestly it made me so goddamn happy. I've been waiting forever for an author like Sanderson, his writing is so unique and simple. Brian's is very similar but it was still different. In my honest opinion Sanderson is still the king and I don't think his student will ever surpass his awesomeness (obviously, no one can). But Brian McClellan has a new mega fangirl. This book is amazing & I am so impressed that this masterpiece is a debut novel. Basically the plot is about Field Marshall Tamas who has just killed the King of his country to help the citizens of his country. But in doing so he has provoked a war with the Nine Nations. Tamas is stretched to his limit and only has his Powder Mages to protect him. This is a compelling & beautifully written, Flintlock Fantasy with one of the coolest magic systems ever. People are comparing it to Full Metal Alchemist and I think that's a perfect comparison for the magic system, so if your a FMA fan, you'll love this series. The feels were so strong with this one, it literally had everything I love in a story; Main Characters who are tortured by their past, friendships, bromances, badassery, sass & heartbreak. The story is told from three main POVS, Tamas, Taniel & Adamant. It also features another POV from Nila but she only had a few chapters. I enjoyed all POVS in this book & wasn't bored once, I definitely had my favourite point of views & that was Taniel's & his dad's Tamas. I thought Adamants POV was less exciting, his meant to be a detective but he wasn't a very clever one imo. I also didn't enjoy Nila's mainly because, i hate her guts, but hers was still more exciting then Adamants. Some of the side characters were absolutely amazing Olem, Sabon, Gavril, SouSmith, Vlora, Mihali, Bo & my second favourite character in the whole novel Ka-Poel. She's now one of my all time favourite female characters ever. Like this chick is the definition of badass, she's also a very special snowflake because she's a mute. Somehow she still managed to be hilarious & captivating, without even saying a word. My favourite was Taniel, I love Taniel so much. My beautiful, troubled, sweet, black powder sniffing babe. "I need to get me one of those," Taniel said. "What?" Gavril asked. "A harem?" "Yeah," Taniel said. it's official guys, I'm joining Taniel's harem. If I only had five words to describe this book I would use: fun, thrilling, unique, badass & amazing. "You the toughest one here?" Definitely a must read for all fantasy fans and all Sanderson fans. I expect great things from this author in the future and I am officially addicted to the Powder Mage series & I can't stop snorting gun powder in the hope of becoming a Powder Mage. Buddy read with my favourite Privileged; Wifey, Dr Petrik,Haifa,Terry,Stefan & Twila. P.s. when I die please bury me with Mistborn, Stormlight archive & the Powder Mage series. I'll be fangirling from the grave. P.s.s. my soul has left my body from that ending. ...more |

It can keep you strong through dark times, but it can also cripple you, keep you locked in a moment that no longer exists.” [image] Bravo to Mr John Gywnne for writing another fantastic book! This is what happens when Lord Of The Rings meets Game Of Thrones.. THIS BOOK IS BRUTAL & I LOVE IT [image] I thought Malice was good.. This book is even better! Shit got real and hectic on page one! I absolutely adored this book and pretty much devoured it, I couldn't take my eyes away every POV chapter ended on a cliff hanger. Like I was ready to fucking combust. This book literally consumed me. I described this story to a friend as a car crash it is so horrible but you can't stop looking, and by that I don't mean the writing is horrible, nearly everything that happens to the characters I loved was horrible from wars to being tortured. So pretty much just an emotional rollercoaster haha. But in saying that I loved this book, I loved how my favorite characters grew, I pretty much loved everything and yes I LOVED ALL THE GORE & DELICIOUS DEATH. Yummy yummy, keep quenching my bloodthirst John Gywnne. This book was better then Malice, it is full of action and the prophecy is explained better. We found out who was the champions for good and evil in book 1 and in book 2 the prophecy is explained we find out who true heart is (I was right, yay!) and who the other players in the game are. *gives stink eye to all baddies* Okay everyone says this book is cliche, well um back the fuck up, it Ain't. Sorry but not sorry I disagree it is NOT CLICHE, yes the plot may not be original but it is the best book I've ever read in regards to a god war. DID I MENTION I CRIED THE WHOLE TIME READING THIS... Yep I'm a sook..but I had so many feels for the goods guys I just literally wanted to give them all a cuddle and tell them everything would be fine. my emotions consumed me with this one I felt the good guys were my friends lol and I did not want anything bad to happen to them. (Even tho everything bad happened to them) the friendships between the good guys is what relived me from this dark grim fantasy read. THIS BOOK HURT MY HEART ESPECIALLY THAT ENDING [image] I love John Gywnnes writing style so much he doesn't spend two pages explaining land scape or what a saddle looks like he is a no bullshit writer and I love that, I still cannot believe these are his first books he is such a fantastic writer it's like he has been writing forever. I did however not like the fact that I didn't even no what Corban or Cywen looked like until the middle of book two, I was also disappointed to find out Veradis was the opposite to what I imagined, so I think in future the author should describe his characters at the beginning even if it is brief. And that is literally all I didn't like about these books lol. John Gywnne is very descriptive when it comes to battle scenes and does not hold back. He has shocked and made me cringe on more then one occasion. I personally think the battles in this are better then GoT, but that's just me. Another thing I loved about this book, if your reading a book about war you know it's gonna to be bad and John Gywnne absolutely delivers. Can't wait for book 3&4 I need my precious NOW ! [image] So pretty much to sum up the story.. This happened (beware hectic gif's usage) [image] & this [image] & more of this [image] Then everyone got their witch on [image] You tamed a wolven?" "She's not tame!!!" I need a bottle of wine after this one lol [image] Ps. Maquin is the stealer of my soul and the reason for my whole existence ...more |

I actually devoured this book and enjoyed doing it, I can't remember the last time I read a book this size in four days. I have been really busy lately but made sure I had time to read this beauty because I literally had to know what happen next. I loved it. I've just finished it and am already looking for any excuse to do a re-read. [image] I'm actually really surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, it had everything I look for in a fantasy book. There were times while reading the Copper Promise that I thought to myself 'was this book actually written for me?' It had everything I love in a good fantasy book, some might say the things I love are cliche and well used & I agree they certainly are (dragons, mages, gods & Demons) but if it is well written it stands out from the rest of the cliche type books, this book was certainly well written and very enjoyable. I have been reading a lot of heavy, grim, dark fantasy lately so reading this book was certainly refreshing and it was actually fun to read, I laughed so much through this book and I also LOVED the bad guys like so much I think the 'bad guys' were my favourite thing about this book and I hardly ever say that. I found the battle scenes descriptive and brutal. There was a part in this book were a child was abused and it made me sick to my stomach, a few of the torture scenes were very brutal and horrible reminded me of my old pal Glokta from first law. And guess what !? I didn't cry for once, yay! I really wanted to give this book 5 stars but it did have a lot of issues but I guess you can expect that with any debut novel, a friend told me that this was a bunch of short stories put into one big story and I guess you can tell that with some of the chapters but it is still readable and a great story. There were times in this book were I honestly was like "this shit is so weird" but not the weird were you feel repulsed it was the type of weird that you have never read before, something you can't quite get your mind around but enjoyed reading, if that makes any sense lol. Okay now a few things I didn't like; I feel like some things in this book just didn't add up. Another thing I didn't like was in the middle of the book it went off to completely random shit that really had nothing to do with the story, like really why did Wydrin go to her home town to kill a bunch of pirates it just had nothing to do with the plot. Also this book was a little slow after that amazingly EPIC start, I felt a little let down, but I didn't skim the boring parts I actually continued reading because I liked the characters and loved the plot and idea of this book. I feel like the author could have left a few of the chapters out, but I still loved it. "I changed my mind. It's been a slow morning and I am easily bored. You, fresh - meat. Who would like to die first?" She held up one of her daggers, showing it to the youngest guard. "This one is called frostling, and the other is ashes." [image] Kindle cover with our MC's on it. I loved Wydrin so much, i found her character very likeable and relatable for me, I swear we could be twins. Wydrin is not your typical sassy sell sword MC, she is like a man but she is still feminine, like she can make jokes with the boys, burp louder then a boy and she's a pig but still a lady. The witty comments that Wydrin say left me in stitches she is so rude and it is hilarious she has no filter (like me LOL). She is so loveable I just want to cuddle her. She is totally my number one favourite female book character ever now & she's a crazy brutal warrior who isn't afraid of anything except maybe losing her bestie Seb. Sir Sebastian is another amazing character, and guess what HE IS A GAY KNIGHT, I no right, coolest shit ever. Like I've never read about a gay warrior before and I was so impressed with how the author portrayed this character. He is not weak or feminine he is a man who is very strong so I'm really glad the author made it realistic. Seb goes through a lot of heartache through this book and on more then one occasion my heart broke for him. HE IS MY PRECIOUS CINNAMON ROLL, I felt so protective over Seb. I really truly love him so much and will always remember my gay knight in shining armour *heart eyes* Seb goes through some interesting situations in this book, I would love to see what happens in the next book in regard to his broken pact with bezcavar (the prince of wounds) Lord Aaron Frith (little princeling as Wydrin likes to say) I had my issues with this character, I found him selfish and an ass throughout the book but couldn't help myself liking him. There was one point at the start were I wanted him to die but he made up for his shitty actions and showed the reader he actually has a heart. The things that Frith went through made my blood boil, he was blood thirsty for revenge and I felt it too. When he actually got his revenge I was cheering out loud, he really FUCKED everyone up and it was amazing. Basically my favourite chapter was when he got his revenge. "'I love the stories like that' said Wydrin. 'Kings hidden under hills, magic in the ground.' She went quiet for a moment. 'Although the it's less entertaining when it's actually happening to you'" The brood army is another favourite of mine. Yes they are the bad guys and yes they did horrible things, but I loved them. When they first found the books and were fighting over the words, I fell inlove even when they killed the innocent people wondering if they had 'words' on them I actually laughed out loud. Oops LOL. I love the names they called themselves so much (ephemeral, crocus, toast, talisman, ennui, glorify, belonging & maelstrom) and cannot wait to see how they develop in the next two books. [image] Y'Ruen my baby, I hated the ending but loved it at the same time. Y'Ruen hands down was my favourite character I LOVE dragons! I like how the author thinks of dragons as evil, huge, intelligent creatures because that's what they are. She isn't like the dragons in GOT (small/useless) she is huge like I mean can burn down one town in one breath, this is how I imagine dragons, so she was spot on for me. Oh and I nearly forgot to mention it had a bird man & Griffins ! That's how epic this book actually is. It is so magical with lots of magic and explosions, read it now please ! There are so many other characters but I won't mention them because I really couldn't careless for them. I really feel like I should write more for this review but my Brain is not working right now, so I may add more lately or re-edit in a few days. I recommend this book to everyone who loves classic fantasy and wouldn't mind reading something a little different! So everyone enjoy reading it :D ...more |

Another buddy read with my fantasy addicted pals at BB&B 4.5 BRUTAL STARS ★★★★ 'even the brave will fall' Warning this book is not for the lighthearte Another buddy read with my fantasy addicted pals at BB&B 4.5 BRUTAL STARS ★★★★ 'even the brave will fall' Warning this book is not for the lighthearted I can't even count the amount of times I was shocked and saddened in this book. [image] I heard this is the authors first book... Umm wow what a great start to no doubt a wonderful career for John Gywnne! This is another great fantasy read that I throughly enjoyed. I did however find the story extremely dark with little relief but it was a good read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed the plot the beginning was very slow (all us fantasy readers know that a good book always starts slow) but halfway through it picked up and I have to say I was not bored once in the last half. There is nothing better then reading about a god war, I love John Gywnne's idea and cannot wait to see what the other books revel. I love the mythology used in this book it has made this an extremely interesting read for me. I must add that the battle scenes were so good and so fucking EPIC!! [image] I love the characters and found them all really well developed. There is a few characters who I ABSOLUTELY LOVE.. Cywen was amazing and such a badass (I love strong female characters), Corban who is a cinnamon roll (and a badass too, I felt so proud of him during this book) and then there was VERADIS omg he is so amazing & honourable *heart eyes*(but he is blinded atm) I also loved storm, shield, Gar & Brina <3 There were a lot of bad guys too (fuck you guys suck) [image] Who would I recommend this to: I think this book would only be suited to adults who have a heart of steel. There are a few parts in this story that are brutal and I literally cried my eyes out. This is also not for the faint hearted a lot of killing, blood, guts and grim shit lol. I'm so keen to read the other books and find out what the prophecy means & then there was that mind blowing ending.. Wow I still am not sure if I want to celebrate or hide and ugly cry lol ...more |
