We are at an opening of a luxury retreat style hotel in Dorset. We know that something terrible happened, people died, there was a massive fire and there were birds.
The story goes back and forth, using journals from the past, first person accounts in the past and present, there is some mysterious magical elements, and some Blair Witch vibes (because woods) and some new age woo woo jargon rounding off the atmosphere nicely.
I didn't mind the birds. And i liked how the stories from the past and present intertwined and provided the resolution for so many wrongs and justice for lots of local folks. Again, highly recommended for those of you who enjoy True Crime full cast of characters. I might make a new shelf just for these! ...more

It's now 20 years later, and the podcast is interviewing the kids of the family (3) and the mom about what really happened to Bradley. They find out. And uncover a couple more murder culprits in the process.
With actual pop culture references and many real reality tv stars mentioned, this read felt very current and captivating. Again, this is really written for the audio performance with a cast of characters. Highly recommended for fans of True Crime podcast format books!

Incredible audio read. There was certainly a good portion of "right book at the right time" in the mix, But i loved spending time in 1500s Scotland, at Incredible audio read. There was certainly a good portion of "right book at the right time" in the mix, But i loved spending time in 1500s Scotland, at the time of the witch hunt hysteria, when people (men) were so afraid of others (women), and things they couldn't explain or understand, that the female population was stripped of not only their right to utter defence again ludicrous accusations, but basically their humanity and right to coexist.
Men could be hateful creatures in the past. Not one man pictured as intrinsically good in this story, and hence it is a story of female strength, friendship and trust.
We meet Jura, a young healer who goes into employ of a Baillie as a maid. She loves doing charm magic and ribbon protection magic. She means only to wish well. We also meet Anna, Danish princess embarking on a journey across the seas to her betrothed, King James (what a zealot), reluctantly. Along Anna brings Kirsten, her maid in waiting. Fate and men bring the 3 women together in unexpected way.
For people who, like me, almost gave up because they couldn't handle the suspense, the story ends well - though not everyone gets what the reader wishes for them.
An enchanting and magical (not literally) historical tale with at time horrific details of witch hunts and torture, highly recommended for lovers of historical fiction. ...more

Not sure if it's the setting - Atlantic City, the gambling, all the side characters - but the plot cacophony made for a very entertaining listen.
Finlay, Steven and Nick are the same as they were in the previous instalments, but their character development is taking hyperbolic form - Finlay loses all sense of self when in presence of Nick, which is all the time, because he turns up EVERYWHERE where Fin is, Steven is so obnoxious it's absurd, and won't let the idea of them as a family go..

For me, this author hasn't written anything worth while since Don't You Dare and i keep trying to catch the same high and it just doesn't materialize.
Kason has a stupid name, he is a jocky jock jock, and i didn't really care about him in the second book. Hayes had the potential but since they made this biiiiig deal about the whole Demi thing, which i don't even ... seems to scare him even, i was just mainly bored and waiting for it to end.
some spice was hot, but most of it was very mid. ...more

For a series where a crime author turns amateur sleuth, women stick together, men are thoroughly villainous, and the story just writes itself this was a banging first instalment. I was a fan from the first chapter and started on the next one right away.
Finlay is a young (early 30s) mom of 2, maybe that's what makes it easier to empathize? Anyway, the central murder in this book and the side characters were suspicious and I was rooting for Julian the whole time...more

This is a story about Saffy (Saffron), her younger sister Poppy, and Saffy's old friend Leona. Saffy is struggling with her mental health (to which the author refers to as her 'crisis' which I guess is the modern way of saying 'mental breakdown' which to me sounds even more outdated but okay), and her ex husband who has custody of their son. There is also her younger sister Poppy, who was assaulted by an unknown individual some time ago. There is Leona, her daughter and husband whom Saffy dislikes very much. Oh and of course the main problem, Leona disappears. With her daughter. And Poppy and Saffy (what stupid names) are left guessing.
The police who gets involved right away seem completely unmotivated to investigate properly. Maybe this is how I felt because this mystery is told not from police POV. Saffy starts sleuthing by herself. There really isn't all that much more to it. The suspense is there but it's all a bit overdramatized and not deep. Just a peddle puddle of personal connections, bad men and mistrustful women all over, with 2/5...more
