I actually didn't know, and once learned also immediately forgot, that this was YA. So even the fact that Cassie is 1**** 4 not too shabby for YA stars
I actually didn't know, and once learned also immediately forgot, that this was YA. So even the fact that Cassie is 17 (or whatever) didn't alert me to the fact that it is. I don't like YA (mostly) for romance, but will accept for adventure and Sci-Fi.
Having said that, at about 50% i knew how this was going to end, and who will make it to the finish line.
The aliens were creepy and the waves were exactly as i imagine the world will end, so yeay for that. Probably will not be continuing with the series, but as a stand alone this works for me just fine....more
Not quite sure what to rate this really, so 3.5 seems like a safe bet. This story had more plot holes than my pasta strainer. BActual rating ⭐⭐⭐.5 / 5
Not quite sure what to rate this really, so 3.5 seems like a safe bet. This story had more plot holes than my pasta strainer. But then, suddenly, at the end, they were all neatly patched up. How did the author do that?
The story is about a small group of people waking up in a weird room after an event dubbed 'The Fall' has effectively ended the world as they knew it. What commences after is a step by step reporting of an escape room, which then transforms into a scavenger hunt adventure. Sounds fantastic in theory, but the execution, and the pacing were juvenile and read like a young YA (not a fan).
The entire novel is interspersed with philosophical and patronizing statements (which I frankly didn't mind) - like this gem:
"[...] We don't always remember what people do to us, but we remember how they made us feel." - hard to argue.
Looking back, this book was like a crockpot full of everything an apocalyptic story might have: drones, toxic storms, nano technology, genetic manipulation, a virus and its cure, androids, government and terrorist groups and reciprocal espionage, climate change and subsequent world extinction, AI and human goodness at the heart of the solution.
We explore themes like friendship, trust, care and mutual reliance. Paradoxically, I felt more for the androids in the story, than the people. The people were okay. The androids however, said things like
"[...] We're apocalyptic androids, not fashion innovators" --- valid, but unfortunate, imagine if you were both!
Recommend if you want an easy-breezy YA read about a world that is ending with a nicely tied up conclusion with a twist....more
