I love all of the Monstrous couples so of course I enjoyed this. It is mostly just the couples doing silly things and then have sex. So obviously, if you like the couples and Lily Mayne's writing, you'll probably just enjoy them. I do so love HEA and seeing what comes beyond it.
There is also Orlith's letters and the Ruke Novella.
I love Orlith and I think he's hilarious. Seeing his interactions with Wyn is so fun. The novella itself is very short and sweet. It goes into the beastie who got his arm unfortunately ripped off in Gloam by Mary's pet.
This entry is definitely the most different out of all of them! It sets up a lot of stuff for what will become book 8 of the Monstrous series.
This boThis entry is definitely the most different out of all of them! It sets up a lot of stuff for what will become book 8 of the Monstrous series.
This book starts from before the rift opens and what could be the first discovery of the rifts. We get to see more of Vint culture and the city that Wyn and Danny visited during the novella, Wyn. It really feels more like a fantasy entry rather than sci-fi / post apocalyptic this time! It's a nice change of pace even if I'm dying for the 8th book now.
There is a bit in the beginning where Jugs and Lor cannot communicate due to language difference. Here comes in Deus Ex Machina to progress their relationship. I'm never too bothered about these things but it's always hard not to notice. A side tangent, but I thought how the English was transcripted to Lor's ears was really funny. It became a game of me trying to figure out what Jugs was saying.
I really loved seeing Lor and Lyri's relationship although Lyri seems 100% more interesting. Lor is a bit flat for me. I think I can really boil him down to, he is the Moric, he's young and kind of naive, and he's a twink with the hots for humans. I love the moments where Lor shows a lot of compassion and life in the beginning. After though, almost all of it just becomes pining for Jugs.
Don't get me wrong, the progression of their relationship is really cute. They become each others safe spaces as they try to navigate their own hectic lives.
I almost wish we could've seen a bit more of Jug's personal life because there were some really interesting conflicts. This book being set in the 80s, there is a certain societal expectation of him. He finds himself in another world where he can be more himself, and he dives into it. He was running from his problems.
However, due to how the plot progresses, (view spoiler)[Jugs will never be able to resolve those problems. (hide spoiler)]
Here is a big spoiler block because that latter end of the book...whew.
(view spoiler)[Lor waiting 30 yrs for Jugs. God. My freaking heart. I have a crippling fear of loneliness so it really spoke to me. Lor really blames himself for what happened to Jugs and does everything in his power to help him. Then, even 20 yrs down the line, Lyri ends up leaving for what is the best for the kingdom. While Lor shuts down when Jugs is in the coma, he shuts down even more when Lyri disappears. He becomes a husk of who he used to be. Just the Moric and nothing more. The scene where he blows up at Lillian for being unable to save Jugs...I totally understand. I've had those days, you've had those days. Days where it feels like nothing will ever be okay ever again.
So god. I am so happy Lily Mayne gives me HEA because I WOULD'VE BEEN A BROKEN MAN. (hide spoiler)]
Okay spoiler over. Anyway, please give me more blueberry twinks Lily Mayne thank you I am so excited for Lyri....more

This book was a bit different from the others. There isn't much new world building but some of it does expand on existing things that we knew. A lot of relevant information from book 3 comes back and we get to see all of the other couples. While I love seeing our previous main characters, I appreciated that most of it was used to bolster Seraph and Lilac.
The book is a bit slower than the others but the pay off was so good. Seraph is in so much pain in the beginning of the book he is literally out of his mind. The first half of the book is really getting Seraph even to a point where he can start formulating coherent thoughts.
Lilac is a quiet and stoic character. He doesn't mess around with too many social norms, he doesn't put up pretenses. Due to that though, he sees Seraph and sees him for what he is. A being that doesn't belong in a cage, in pain, and suffering. He'll do anything to make sure that Seraph's pain stops. Even if it means ending Seraph's life himself. It just felt like Lilac falls in love with Seraph because despite everything Seraph went through, he was able to overcome it all. Yet still be a kind soul. Almost the exact opposite of Lilac. He himself went through so much and he did everything he needed to survive. He doesn't regret it. He recognizes he's not interested or capable of the same forgiveness Seraph extends.
I didn't even expect the twist for Seraph to be honest. I didn't really think about it but it makes sense. It was so fulfilling to see him start to come into his own once the pain subsided. All of his adoptive monster dads doting over him was really cute as well.
There is so much I just cannot talk about without spoiling this book. Finally, I just love touch him and you die tropes. Also Lilac having no gag reflex um... 0 w 0;;...more

To prevent myself from repeatingI was really excited for Moth's book and it did not turn out how i expected it to! I'm not disappointed though at all.

We got to see a bit more of what the cities are like in this entry. The previous books talked a lot about them! This entry goes more into the cannibalism cult that was touched on in Gloam. There's some more lore discovered about Gloam himself as well as the Herald. Some of it is to set up book #7.
The main conflict of the book seems focuses on Moth and his own insecurity. There's also other plot lines but they don't get as much time. I would've liked a bit more focus on the cult. This is the first dual perspective book in the series. It was a fun change of pace seeing both Moth and Charlie's thoughts.
I really loved exploring Moth and Charlie's dynamic. I can 100% see why Charlie is friends with Hunter now. It is a bit of a grumpy x sunshine but not quite as well. Charlie is loud, bold, abrasive, and cheerful. Moth is a touch starved, love starved, badass, but hides it all under a nonchalant exterior. Although he blushes quite easily so he often betrays himself. I really enjoyed how respectful and patient Charlie was. A couple months is still a short time period to get over a life of insecurity but still, I think it was handled really nicely.
I'm still not 100% a fan of just starting a relationship by going, do you wanna fuck? However, I still think it was better than Soul Eater's handling of it. Charlie has reason to believe that Moth is in love with Ghost so he takes what he can get.
So far, I think my ranking is:
Edin Moth Gloam Soul Eater The Rycke
(I still love all of them though.) Also, if you haven't read the charades short on Lily Mayne's website, please do. It has more Moth Charlie being silly lil butts....more

There were many times I wasn't entirely sure how the conflict was going to be resolved and it sent me spiraling.

There were some hints of what Rig was up to in the previous book but it was nice to see what was actually going on. There's a bit of new lore brought up in this novel but most of it was focused on what was important to the story at hand.
The new information and characters are partially set ups for future books while fully exploring more of the Collector Mary we heard of in the first book. There's not a ton of overlap but we do see Ghost and Aury a decent amount which is always fun.
If Aury and Ghost's relationship felt a bit more natural to me, Rig and Gloam were somewhere in between that and the previous books. Rig is a horny motherfucker but it doesn't just boil down to that. He's very kind hearted and has a strong sense of justice. There's a bit of leering from his part in the book but it didn't feel all encompassing.
I will say though like while reading this, I kept looking at the % left. When they were (view spoiler)[happy at 70% into the book, (hide spoiler)] I was sweating bullets thinking something was gonna happen. Thankfully it was a cop out because I do not know if my heart could handle it.

This book is about 20% world building and 80% Wyn and Danny being sickening sweet. I like it a lot. I enjoyed what it added onto their relationship.
The lore of the monster world is super intriguing and I'm glad we got to see some more of it. It isn't all that complex but still very enjoyable. We get to meet Orlith in this book and he's interesting to say the least. I liked seeing the little bits of lore we get specifically for Telyths and the Mabs.

I think thisI do wish that Goodreads had a .5 rating because I did like this book. I just did not like it nearly as much as Lily Mayne's other books. I think this is more of a preference of the relationship dynamic.
To prevent myself from repeating what I've said in other reviews too much, I'm gonna try to keep newer thoughts in the reviews from now on.
In this book, we kind of see how raiders live. It was a nice change of pace after the previous two books covered mostly the military. The raiders in this novel are mostly secular but we do get to see a few different types of raiders. I enjoyed learning more about the Rycke after hearing about them so much in the previous two books. The concept is really interesting. Wyn and Edin talk about the Rycke but Aury is definitely different from what I was expecting!
We get introduced some new characters that will be important down the line. I really liked them! Rig and Ghost's relationship is really cute and funny. Moth seems very interesting. We don't see any of the other characters in this particular entry but that was fine.
Aury and Ghost's relationship is very comforting. Ghost is anxiety ridden and Aury has PTSD. When they see the other in trouble, they're able to rise to the challenge and put aside their problems for a moment. I felt like the attraction in this book was a bit smoother comparatively to the last two books. Where the last two books was blurting out, I AM ATTRACTED TO YOU, this one is a lot of longing glances between the two of them. It feels more natural.
I'm a bit fan of the touch him and you die trope so that's always fun. It was very intriguing how this trope was handled though. This isn't until the latter I wanna say 70% of the book?
Out of the whole series, this one is the most skippable to be honest but I still wouldn't recommend skipping it. It's a solid entry in its own right....more

However, I'm gonna keep my review thoughts limited to this book only.
To touch on previous points I've made on Soul Eater, I think the world building is not bad. However, it's not particularly substantial either. The main set up of the rifts and how the humans handled it are really interesting. You don't get that much more. The majority of the book focuses on the relationships between monsters and humans. Depending on who you are, that could be a pro or a con. For me, I don't mind either way.
Unlike the previous book, there is a plot line this time. Hunter's friend Charlie has been kidnapped. Edin finds Hunter in peril and helps him out. He seems to take an interest in Hunter and offers to help Hunter find Charlie. It's fairly simple but I do think it's a marked improvement on the previous entry. The formula is much the same but I thought it suited Hunter's personality more. First 50% is plotline and growing feelings, then we get some smut, some story, then more smut, and rinse and repeat.
Danny & Wyn show up in this book as well. I actually preferred their interactions in this book rather than the previous one. It was fun seeing them as well as how they contribute to the story.
It would be remiss of me not to mention that a seven thousand year old being falls in love with a thirty year old. I mentioned this in my review of Soul Eater as well. It's always a bit weird to me. However, unlike Danny and Wyn, Hunter and Edin seem more suited to each other to me. They're both kind of bulky hot headed guys although it is still the grumpy x sunshine dynamic. They seem to have more in common. It's possible if you didn't like the first book, that you might enjoy this one.
They're still fairly simple but I do feel like all the characters get a bit more fleshed out in this one. The book itself is longer too so there's more time to develop. I wish we got to see a bit more of Edin's somber side. There are a few moments he seems to feel wistful but he doesn't open up as much as Hunter does.

I went and pick this up afterwards and started rereadingTo start off, I found this series through watching Creep Cast and listening to their episode. I went and pick this up afterwards and started rereading.
The world and concept of this series is really interesting. A gas station in the middle of nowhere by a small town. Despite only having a couple visitors at maximum every day, it somehow stays open. Odd things happen at this gas station and an odd smelling is surrounding the whole time. So many bizarre things happen day after day, it becomes commonplace.
At the register, we have Jack. Jack is suffering from a condition that is terminal. Jack who decides to keep a journal at the behest of his psychologist.
I would say this series is primarily comedy before it's a horror. There are always gory and scary things happening all the time. The comedy comes from the fact no one seems to be that perturbed about it. There are some genuinely good descriptions of body horror and cosmic horror in this. It definitely works for me. I enjoy the quippy humor. The comedic timing is great. The horror is definitely fun and intriguing. A lot of mysteries, some that lead back into each other, some that are still left open ended. The most curious mystery though surrounds our protagonist himself, Jack.
There are moments in the book where the comedy sheds away. Those are those moments when Jack is genuinely disturbed. There is so much wacky inane fucked up shit in the book that Jack just brushes off. So when something gets to him, it gets to me a bit too.
I wasn't a fan of the part before the end with the (view spoiler)[Dark God. (hide spoiler)] I agreed with the Creep Cast, I really wished that part was played as a straight man to Jack's never ending humor.

If you enjoyed the first one, most likely you will enjoy this one as well. I can see the argument of the same old same old getting stale but personally I thought it switched it up enough.
There are many questions that get answered in this book that just lead to more new questions. The further down the rabbit hole we go, the more bizarre it gets. It really does get bizarre in this.
Jack in this book seems like he's starting to reach his limit. He goes thru the gauntlet physically and mentally. The question is though, when does he break? Malboro/Jerry becomes a much more prominent figure in this book. I really enjoy him. There's just something fun about the character but also something irredeemably off. He's both friendly but guarded, hilarious but serious, out of touch with reality but somehow the one that makes the most sense at times. (view spoiler)[I will be so sad if he dies. (hide spoiler)]
I take back my criticism of the last book. I said in the last book I did not like the Dark God being a humorous entity as well. I now realize the true straight man of the book is Spencer Middleton. There is nothing more terrifying than a man that just won't die, no matter what you do. Then that man wants nothing more to see you suffer. Not die. Suffer.
The first 50% of the book was more or less unneeded with minor bits of MAJOR plot points. It was still pretty funny. It's hard to criticize useless plot points when the whole first book and the second book were mostly jokes with an underlying plot. Maybe they'll come up later though?
Overall though, I'm very excited to read the next book but I have to definitely take a break because I'm expecting more of the same....more

Jokes aside though (altho I'm also serious), this was interesting. I thought the use of the Strength arcana was really interesting here. It was a good representation of both the upright and the reverse.
LA is a grumpy asshole. I love it. I thought it was absolutely hilarious. He's rude and mean, however he lashes out so he can't be hurt. However, the book never makes excuses for him. It's not accepted that him being horrible is okay because he's hurt. I love though that he never stops really being a grumpy asshole. He's just better about it.
Cass was not what I expected. The Beast but if he was flamboyant and thoughtful. He was honestly a bit much for me but it's hard not love him. He's very patient and understanding with LA the entire time. He really does just want the best for him and encourages him every step of the way. Yet he will call out LA's bullshit every time.
I love Grumpy x Sunshine dynamic lol.
The ending of the book really wrapped up in a nice neat little bow. A little idealistic for my standards but I love HEA so it's really whatever.

I've loved the other two books in the Goliaths of Wrestling but I really enjoyed the dynamic of Rafe and Dan. Unfriendly neighbors to lovers was so fun. It started off kind of slow but around the midway point, it just descended into pure smut. These books have always been very humorous and light hearted. It doesn't take it self seriously. There's almost always jokes and quips. I personally enjoy it but I know not everyone does. This book though in particular has some moments where I screeched from second hand embarrassment. I don't get embarrassed lol. I can't say that last two books did that to me. Wacky hijinks is all.
My favorite parts of the book though are the moments between where they legitimately just start liking each other and their company. It's really cute and sweet. I would've loved more moments like this to be honest.
Rafe is a introverted nerdy IT guy who's a bit of a grump. He has his friends that he likes to hang out with, his routine that he likes to stick to, and his foods that he likes to eat. He doesn't like everything that messes that up. After seeing something he shouldn't at his neighbour's open window, he experiences a sexual awakening. Cue bi panic.
Dan is a wrestler at the Goliaths of Wrestling and all around fuck boy. Rafe, his neighbour, seems to absolutely hate him. It's honestly kind of cute. However, Rafe showing up at his work is definitely more amusing to him than it should be.
Honestly legitimately just such a fun read....more

TherA lovely continuation to the series but the pacing was much slower this time. There isn't a whole lot that actually happens in this book frankly. There are some great scenes closer to the end that help develop the relationship between Victor, Zee, and Adam. Plus some important plot points as well. The rest was still fun and fine but not exactly necessary.
It really still hits all the same beats. It's funny, quippy, and the relationships between the characters are the highlights. The characters themselves are all fun and distinct but god do I love me some Tom Collins.
The call back jokes are still there but they didn't hit the same this time. I'm not sure if its due to the repetition or how it was executed this time. Also I wanted more murder Adam but alas, Adam is committed to a very good normal innocent human being.

However, I did turn over in my bed one night and went, nope I don't like that. So it evoked something from me albeit I'm not sure if it was fear but more unease.
It's a relatively short book but I have major issues with portions of how its written. There are no quotes in this book. Dialogue happens in blocks with line breaks indicating when someone else is talking. This is fine for conversation. It is not fine when there are huge blocks of a character ranting. I have poor reading comprehension. So when there's huge amounts of text it was extremely hard to read. I understood the gist of it but my brain glazed over most of the words. My partner has dyslexia and they wanna read this book. I'm not sure how that's gonna go lol.
The book starts off really strong with some genuinely fun & creepy moments. Around the midpoint it started to drag. The parents were frustrating me even if their reaction is fairly normal. The ending really fell flat for me.
The descriptions of Other Mommy were great though all the way throughout. The part where her (view spoiler)[jaw opens up impossibly wide? (hide spoiler)] Love that so much. That is so fucking cool. I actually like that others can see Other Mommy. I love that we never find out what exactly it is. The mind filling in the blanks is the best thing you can do for horror.
I liked that the book is written from Bela's perspective. She hears and sees everything but she doesn't understand all of it. Yet we as the readers do.
This was still a fun read though. I was recommended this by friends who have a young daughter. All I gotta say is if their kid starts asking about carnations, I'm just gonna start digging their graves for them....more

The is the first book out of the seven that are currently out for the Monstrous series. At this point when I'm writing this, I've read all of the books and many of the short stories. The book really feels like the first one out of all of them. I'll be keeping my thoughts on Wyn and Danny specifically to this book.
I thought the world building was really great, I loved what bits and pieces we did get. All of the different species were really fun. I loved the monster anatomy, I thought it was a bit basic but still very fascinating. A lot of it is rooted within reality with Wyn's facial features and body. The book alternates starting from plot, then to a little about the world, then smut, and then more lore, and smut. Repeat until the end of the book. Personally I enjoy watching relationships develop and it doesn't necessarily need plot for me. If that's not your speed, that's understandable.
So to start off, this is a fated mates book. Does the concept of a millennial aged being falling inexplicably in love(or interest) with a twenty three year old turn you off? Especially with one look? It's pretty weird to me but for the most part I ignore it. I don't really blame Danny for being interested in Wyn. It was pretty jarring how down for it Wyn was. Especially with his views on humans. It gets developed more outside of this book, but again, I'm trying to keep within this book.
Regardless of how their relationship was developed, I still found their interactions fun and sweet. I do like the trope of grumpy x sunshine. Plus Wyn having a soft spot for Danny is really cute.
There isn't too much to talk about the characters outside of that! They're fairly one note. I do feel like each of the books are a standalone so theoretically you could skip it. However, I did find enjoyment seeing Danny & Wyn again in subsequent books so reading this one enhanced the other ones. It's 100% not gonna be for everyone and that's fine.
Oh also, I did think the character cards drawn by Lina Ganef really helped enhance my experience....more

I might come So, starting off to address the elephant in the room, I haven't read the Monstrous series so my review isn't gonna take it into account. I might come back to edit this after because it's on my to read list. I'm not going to mention it further in the review because I would just be repeating myself.
This needed some more proof reading. There were grammar errors, missing punctuation, random letters, and sentences that made no sense. It wasn't unreadable but often enough where it was noticeable.
The world building was pretty interesting. I enjoyed the set up. There's quite a lot of different creatures. Some of it felt a bit unnecessary especially the ones that were mentioned just in passing. It's set in a post apocalyptic United States after a rift to another world has been opened. I wish we were able to explore more of the Gatero's culture but that never happens.
I couldn't tell you much about Soren to be honest. He's fairly simple and bland. He starts off as a kind of cagey and jaded survivor. After he meets Merrick, he just really turns into a lovesick fool. It's a bit jarring. There's something that happens later in the book that changes Soren but honestly, it didn't effect his character like at all. It was disappointing.
Merrick is a bit more interesting but fell kind of flat as well. He starts off as a cheerful jovial guy but morphs more into touch him and you die later on. The most interesting part for me was learning more about the anatomy of the Gatero. The instalove/lust in this book is literal as well.
There are some cute moments in the book between the two characters. They're very sweet. There's also some moments with Emily that I enjoyed.
The pacing was somewhat bad. It started off really really slow. Around the 30% point, it picks up a bit but its still very slow. This continues until around the 80% mark where literally everything happens. It sets up a sequel but I suppose I'll read Monstrous before I proceed with the sequel.
Overall, it was okay but I definitely would not reread it....more

This is a dark romance book. It is not cute. Frankly, Silas is freaking creepy. There is dubious consent (main li) and straight up rape (not by the main li) in this book. The author has stated Silas and Alina will have a HEA but...frankly I think he needs an attitude makeover to get to that point. This isn't romance imo, it's smut.
With dark romance books, it always straddles the line of what is okay in fantasy and what you should expect in reality. I do not doubt 100% there are people who wish to be in Alina's place. Please get help if you are in a similar situation. Your story will not end like Alina's.
I think these topics should be discussed. We shouldn't shy away from and pretend that this injustices don't exist. However, a clear line for me is always that the people perpetrating these acts should not be good people. I do think this book succeeds in that. The cast are not good people. They are morally grey at best and most of them are much worse.
The rape scene is a bit too gratuitous in my opinion. Part of it is used to express how horrible and powerful these people are but it didn't need to go into detail. There's horror in the implied and the unspoken as well.
With that out of the way, onto the review.
The world is set in Victorian London. I think the book does a fairly good job of evoking that feeling but it is more or less just set dressing. Personally though, I do find the take on the creatures very interesting. There's a bit of lore of how the creatures work that I really enjoyed! I hope the next book expands on it because it's just bits and pieces right now.
I both liked and disliked Alina. Often times, it feels like lust is a primary factor for why she acts the way she does. I enjoyed her obsession with scientific curiosity and her penchant for murdering abusive men. I loved her head strong nature when it reared its head. She's in every way weaker than the creatures but she has her own fangs. Her backstory was sad but a bit of it felt like shock value. I don't feel like it was necessary. Frankly I don't think there needs to be a reason to poison abusive men.
Silas...whew. Dude's creepy. He's giving Edward Cullen a run for his money. His obsession doesn't have a rhyme or reason. It just is. If he didn't have (view spoiler)[drugs in his dick, (hide spoiler)] I would just write him off. There was no point at this book where I really enjoyed him. Frankly, I hope he gets more development and starting groveling the next book because what the actual fuck dude.
Their relationship is tentative at best for me. I can understand Silas' obsession with Alina but I frankly do not understand what Alina sees in him. Most of the book is written in Alina's perspective with a few chapters here and there with Silas being a creep. It just cements me confusion with Alina's affection. The most I can possibly muster is that she enjoys having power over a creature that could snap her in two if he wished. Otherwise, he's just a means to an end.
The pacing of the book was a bit off for me as well. It starts off really slow as Silas stalks Alina but then it was smut smut smut midway through. At the end, everything happened all at once leaving a lot of new questions. The writing was easy to read and simple. Perfect for me personally. I have a hard time with reading comprehension so it was helpful. I have the paperback and it's a really lovely formatted book. Mine came with off set printing on the spine though so RIP me.
Overall it's not a bad read! I enjoyed it well enough but it took me some time to get into it. It doesn't make you think too hard on the content, it wears a lot of it on its sleeve. If you're okay with the trigger warnings and are looking for smut, I think this would be a good pick. If you're looking for romance...this isn't for you....more
