Monstrous #3

The Rycke

Rate this book
Life as a raider in the Wastes, where monsters roam and the military lurks, is as easy as it sounds.

I’ve been out here for a long time, and the fear that courses through my blood every time I have to step outside our camp walls to scavenge never fades. No matter how many monsters you face—and have to run for your life from—it doesn’t ever get easier.

But when I come across a bound and injured monster in an abandoned military base, I can’t leave him behind. His presence in our camp is causing tension, but I can’t bring myself to care when I get to see a different side to him—when he starts to show me who he is, beneath the pain and lingering trauma.

But despite his gentle nature, I soon discover why others are so desperate to own him. Why the military, and now this stranger lurking outside our camp, want to put him back in chains and take him away from me.

There’s something hiding under his skin. Something that threatens to upend my entire life, the one I’ve spent my years carefully protecting out here.

There’s a reason why all other monsters fear him.

The Rycke is Book Three of the Monstrous series, a post-apocalyptic m/m fantasy series that features monsters and human men falling in love. It is best to read the series in order. Warning: This m/m love story contains explicit sexual content and is not suitable for young readers. It also contains graphic depictions of torture and violence, and deals with PTSD.

i love this series!!!

dystopian mm romance is, hands down, one of my favourite niche genres ever. i also ADORE human/monster romances. Lily Mayne put two of my favourite things together, so OBVIOUSLY this series is now one of my absolute favourites!

description

⚡️ some spoilers ahead!! stop reading if you don’t want to be spoiled! ⚡️

in this book, we finally got to see how some raiders live out in the wastes! yay, more world building!
we also FINALLY got to meet the rycke we’ve been hearing about since book 1, and his human Gage!

the rycke, nickname One, real name Aury. 🖤
• he’s babie. shy, gentle & kind.
• 700 years old (which means he’s super powerful, because the ryckes gain strength with age).
• THIS DUDE HAS WINGS!!! he also has barbs on the side of his neck and down his spine, bird-like feet, black veins all over his body & lots of scars. has a black, forked (👀) tongue.
• he's “a dichotomy of unlimited violent rage and a peaceful gentle nature”.
• he doesn’t like causing harm, but he will literally rip out your spine if you threaten someone he cares about.
• all monsters are scared of him & avoid him.
• he obviously suffers from PTSD, since he was held captive for years.

Ghost, real name Gage. 🖤
• 26 years old.
• anxiety in human form.
• a raider living out in the wastes.
• bad at socialising.
• lets people walk all over him (it was great seeing him stand up for himself & Aury when he got pushed to his limit though).
• doesn’t trust the military (good).
• has chickens! (Aury loves them too).
• got the name Ghost because he’s sneaky and manages to be basically invisible when convenient.
• the scout of his camp.

we’ve previously heard about this specific raider camp from Edin (pretty sure this is the camp that Edin wanted to bring Danny in book 1 to).
this is also the camp that Cat is from, who we met in book 2! (i kinda wanted to scream at the characters in this book “i know exactly where Cat is!!!”, since obviously they lowkey all think he’s dead af lmao).
we also got to meet Moth, who’s half human, half monster and who knows Edin. didn’t exactly love him in the beginning, but he won me over by the end of this book. (please tell me Moth gets a book in the future…?🥺).
my favourite side character was 100% Lilac though!! (he’s totally chill, but lowkey psycho too).
book 4 is gonna be Rig’s book, who i also liked quite a lot! (he’s Ghost’s bff).

ANYWAYS, all i’m trying to say is that this book also had a lot of great side characters.🤣
let’s get back to the actual main characters now…

Aury and Gage were SO sweet together. their little reading sessions were adorable! (i always love when characters in books like books!🤣). these two read to each other, how cute is that??? they literally found each other’s voices soothing.

“my body relaxed into the bed when he started reading a moment later. i closed my eyes so i could focus entirely on his voice. if this was what my voice sounded to him – this soothing – then i understood why he’d liked listening to me speak. this was heaven.
i tried valiantly to stay awake as One read to me, but my head was too clogged, and my body had been pushed well past its limits. i feel asleep far too quickly, one hand stretched out on the bed toward the monster reading to me in his soft, sweet voice.”
omg.🥺

my favourite moments were probably the wing cuddling though!

“we were on our sides, facing each other, with one of Aury’s wings tucked under me. the other, he’d draped over my body, cocooning us together and blocking out the rest of the cabin.”

“before i could get very far, Aury’s wings were swooping around and folding me back up against his chest, holding me there tightly as his arms looped around my back and he grinned down at me.” i want a winged boyfriend... 🙄

the way they found comfort in each other was so beautiful. they were so protective of each other. i also loved the fact that they were pining for each other from the very beginning.

Aury is a sweetheart most of the time… but when someone threatens a person he cares about he shows his predator side.
the first time he shifted? holy shit. he massacred a whole camp of people in a couple of minutes. literal bullets didn’t even make him flinch.

“a dark, ominous sound rose from him as he cast his enormous, demonic shadow over the entire compound. i felt sick when i realised it was laughter.
this was like a nightmare. like some old horror movie. and Aury was the hideous, terrifying monster hellbent on murdering everyone.
he dove.
the raiders’ screams grew sharper and more piercing as sheer terror imploded throughout the camp. blood was spraying, arcing into the air, screams getting cut off with wet gurgles and horrified sobs. body parts flew. entire bodies were crushed.”
damn Aury... 😳

over the first two books we heard multiple times about how dangerous ryckes are. since Aury was such a gentle, sweet being all the time, Ghost didn’t believe that Aury could be dangerous in any way. until he saw it with his own eyes obviously. 🤣
Gage had a hard time accepting that fact, but eventually he did.

“i didn’t care what he could become. i didn’t see that monstrous face when i looked at Aury. this was my sweet, gentle, kind monster. he was still my Aury.” 🖤

the duality of a man…
such a sweetie pie most of the time… but if you hurt someone he loves, he will literally crush you with his bare hands/feet/wings. how romantic.

⚡️ end of spoilers. ⚡️

to sum up, i loved this book just as much as books 1&2.
apparently we’re getting a Wyn/Danny novella next up in Wyn’s POV! can’t wait to see my two favourites again!🖤
also, a lot of the storylines keep stretching out over the books and i’m super excited to see how they all will be solved! i guess we’re gonna get some loose ends tied up in book 4!

~4.5~

Even though Lily Mayne's post-apocalyptic dystopia is brutal and dangerous, I can't get enough of this Monstrous world.

Aury is the last of his kind and possesses the memories of all ryckes who came before him. He is specimen one, the first creature the military captured. He was tortured the longest, but he never fought back. Aury is peaceful and shy, until someone tries to hurt the being he loves.

Ghost, along with his friend, Rig, find a broken, catatonic Aury on a deserted military base (from whence Wyn and Edin escaped) and bring him back to their settlement.

This is the camp mentioned in the last two books, the camp Cat (Charlie's cellmate whom Hunter tried to rescue from the fighting ring in the second book) founded along with Anchor (whom I didn't like much at all, not with the way she treated Ghost as if he were disposable).

The story being set in the camp vs. the Wastes (and various abandoned houses/motels) was a nice change of pace. The way the characters and story lines are all connected is what makes this series so damn interesting (addictive!) and why these books should not be read out of order.

I found it slightly jarring how quickly Aury and Ghost bonded. Initially Aury wouldn't talk at all, and then within one day he's talking to Ghost. I would have preferred a slower burn. Even so, I think these two complemented each other well. Ghost gave Aury a voice, a new beginning, and Aury gave Ghost courage to finally stand up for himself.

My heart truly shattered for Aury and his broken wing, his quiet nature, the way he lived in the shadows. Ghost saw Aury not as a strong, deadly beast but as a being with a gentle soul. The hurt/comfort theme was really well done.

Also, not gonna lie, when Aury showed his fierce side to protect Ghost, I wasn't even a little sorry. I may have cheered him on.

I only wish the ending hadn't been quite so abrupt, but I'm hoping we'll see these two in the next book.

It was nice to get a look into the Raiders of this monster apocalyptic world. And I loved all the different characters. Ghosts flaws and how he progressed throughout the story I thought was great. Rig, always being ready to defend the ones he cares about and just his personality. Lilac, being a mystery with a softer side. And Anchor, making me dislike her at times but then remember that she has this whole camp to run. And Aruy, I don’t care if he is some big destructive monster sometimes, he’s sweet most of the time and I love him, he’s precious. I think I ended up liking this book better than Edin, the only complaint I have is that I didn’t get a scene with Aruy getting his nails painted. (4.5)

5/5⭐ 5/5🌶️ 3/5😱 3/5🎧

Just the best.
This will not be an objective review,
somehow Aury / The Rycke and Ghost / Gage just worked for me 200%.

In short, the premise for you if you are wondering if you should read this one (TLDR - yes you should). Rig and Ghost (Gage) are a pair of Raiders who go out into the wastes to scout out the military base (the one where Wyn released all the beasties in Soul Eater). They come across Aury chained up and badly injured. He is shy, silent and scared shitless. Also he's in shock and just generally seems absolutely harmless. They take him back to their camp and patch him up. Aury is all long black hair, glistening black eyes and just overall beautiful male. Ghost assumes he freaks Aury out because Aury acts all shy around him, but turns out it's because Aury is immediately smitten. They strike up a friendship - turn romance, and things pick up from there, because how come all other monsters run like hell whenever they see Aury? And what is this Rycke everyone talks about reverently, like he is the most vicious bloodthirsty devastating monster there is?
Plot wise this was the best of the series so far.

Aury was yummy, and there is something about your lover who will rip every threat to shreds.
Gage was also okay - somehow he is a very highly coveted piece of Raider ass in the Wastes, what with Moth sort of having wanted him and now Aury all bossy and bonded-matey. 🤩
I have some questions though - firstly, why the masks? I'm sure they explained and i missed it, but it sounds like most of the campers don't even know what their camp roommates really look like?
Second, why has noone told Anchor to stop it with the constant visits to the wastes ISO Cat. Let it go, lady, he's gone, for now.

🌶️A little side note on the smut. Bloody hell. 🥵Lily will always melt the panties off you but something about this pairing just did it for me. Maybe it was the sheer surprise of both every time they c💦me. And about that, there was excessive c💦m and thank you for that Ms Mayne. My little kinky heart is so full.

I actually did a dual read for this, so i read and listened, and both have their merits. Michael Lesley, as usual, is the voice magician, but i did not necessarily like either MC's in his rendition, hence my detours into the reading copy, which was equally amazing. I felt Aury's pitch was too high even though as per the writing he had a low voice, and Ghost was just slow and soft.

I am not too excited about Gloam, although it's supposed to be great?
I cannot skip, so onwards.

Can I get a Rycke over here? Gaaahhhhhh!!!! 😫😫

What a lovely surprise this was, I had no idea that it was coming but I enjoyed it so much and I feel this one is much more like the first one in development. Loved it. 🥰❤👐🏻

At the end of the book Miss Lily says that many people wouldn't expect what Aury truly ended up being and I agree, I did not expect it at all, but I loved it the same. I think that it was brilliant to make him into a being so sweet and so afraid of himself that everytime he appeared I wanted to go Latin momma on him and protect him! Even though he's the most dangerous monster out there, 🤣🤣 the brilliant irony. I enjoyed Aury a lot and what a lovely name. *swoons*

The human side of this couple, Ghost, was a really lovable character. He had real insecurities that were shown through out the book and it was also shown how he started to break those barriers. I appreciated his silent strength, I understood his social anxiety, his fears, his doubts, he was very human and very mature, wich was one of my issues with the las one. (I still love you Edin). And he didn't flipped when he really knew what the Rycke was, THANK GOODNESS!!! 😫🥰❤

I do feel like I always end this books with the same problem: questions, so many questions. I constantly wished I was in Aury's head, it seemed a really interesting place to be and it would help to know more about the monsters. With Aury I wanted to know more about his feelings, about his opinions on what was happening around him, because he was so kind I wanted to see the world through his eyes and the sex scenes too of course.

But this was a really lovely book, with really lovely characters. I loved Aury and I loved Gage and I hope they are very happy for a long time. 🥰🥰❤

The next one is about Wyn and Danny told in Wyn pov *faints*. I'm actually a little bit scared to meet them again. The first book was perfect for me, but I'll trust the author to do it justice.

And Cat is still in the fighting ring, for wich monster is he staying? Me needs to know! 😫😫

Now, who wants Lilac's book? Because I'm starved for it!!!!!! *squeals*

And those names, I need to know where they come from so lovely. ❤❤

Anyways, lovely series so far, very excited for the next ones. 💃💃💃

The Rycke is here! This sweet monster who everyone's scared of, and his ball-of-anxiety human Ghost.

This book is set mainly in the Nebraska camp that we have heard about before, and features a whole host of new characters, many of whom are getting their own books, as well.

It was fun being able to flesh out how humans who aren’t in the military live out in the Wastes—how they’ve made their homes safe enough to stay alive out there, and what being a raider means. Which, in Ghost’s case, means doing the shitty jobs no one else wants because you’re a pushover and scared of pissing anyone off. Poor Ghost.

I hope you enjoy (or enjoyed, if you're reading this after finishing it) The Rycke. He might be my favourite.

My first 5 stars review for this series.

Edit:
I tried listening to the audio version, but as much as I love Michael Lesley, the voice he chose for Ghost puts me to sleep in under 5 minutes. It’s so… tranquil. Hushed. Just perfect when you have issues sleeping, but not for an audiobook.

Original review:

Before we dive into the story, let me repeat what I've already said in the previous reviews - the world building is absolutely fantastic, with most humans living in fortified, overcrowded cities at the coast after "monsters" came to earth through a tear between the worlds, ending life as we know it. And the "wastes" in the midland, populated by all kind of monsters, lawless outcasts called "raiders", and the omnipresent military with its own agenda.

Each book seems to add another layer to this world, with new monsters and interesting characters.

That being said - this book takes to Cat's camp (Charlie's fellow inmate from the previous book). Ghost and Rig, two of the raiders living there, are scouring the ruins of the infamous Nebraska military base to look for clues about Cat's whereabouts, when they stumble upon a wounded, bound and almost catatonic monster, and they take him back to their camp to help him heal.

This monster is none other than the Rycke - the monster Wyn warned Danny about.

I'll try and stay spoiler-free - but let me tell you that I loved both Ghost/Gage and Aury, the monster, even during the violent scenes. Thank God I knew there an HEA waiting at the end, because the path to that was quite rocky at times.

This series is getting better and better, so now I'm off reading Rig's (and then Moth's) book.

❝I love you, Gage,❞ he repeated, making me practically vibrate with the need to rip my mask off and kiss him. ❝I will be forever grateful that you found me that day. I owe you so much.❞

✦ auryauryauryauryauryauryauryauryaury 🥺 the most precious being of all worlds and deserves to be protected at all costs. he may be the rycke, the monster that even the most powerful monsters fear, but he is the most gentle natured, endearing, soft spoken, kindest creature ever.
✦ this book is touch him and you die and i'll protect him at all costs to the max. do not ever mess with the rycke's mate. aury may look very innocent and gentle (which he is) but he will destroy anyone who touches a hair on ghost's (gage's) head. 🥰
✦ this book was so emotional and made me cry. my heart broke for aury and what he went through. he was scarred (especially from having the previous ryckes memories) and so frightened by what happened to him in the base. he could not even talk aloud. i loved how ghost slowly brought him out of his shell. how they read books to each other because they found comfort in each others voices was so cute. i was basically this emoji through the whole book: 🥺

❝I don’t know,❞ One admitted eventually, his voice soft. ❝I heard your voice and it… cut through everything else—through all the noise in my head. It sounded… important.❞

✦ aury being so shy and embarrassed around ghost. how is it possible that this creature that everyone fears, (even when other monsters are in the vicinity of him without even seeing him, they are instantly scared), can act this way? you wouldn't even think he was this scary rycke. he was so so perfect. okay i need to stop gushing about him. 😭
✦ ghost was a very relatable character. he was very kept to himself, he doesn't like to socialize a lot and he lets people walk over him but he had huge character development and i loved seeing him stand up for himself and also defend aury. 🥰

⚡️ spoilers here so beware... ⚡️

✦ what really bothered me was ghost's reaction to aury transforming when those people hurt ghost. his reaction to aury really hurt me. aury was just trying to protect him and if he didn't do what he did, those people would have killed both of them. i mean i get it, this gentle natured monster just turned into this huge scary beastie but aury couldn't control it and he saw a threat to his mate so he attacked. ghost even said "shut up" to aury and i just about jumped into the book and almost beat the shit out of ghost ngl. how he treated aury after broke my heart so much. but thankfully that whole thing didn't last long and ghost came around pretty quickly.
✦ also, unlike in Edin, aury will die when ghost dies so that made me feel a lot better about the whole monsters out living their humans thing (however from what i've heard this changes in Wyn so i'm very excited).

Humans could die so easily, but the rycke chose its death. Our bodies didn’t fail. The life seed didn’t die. When we were done with living, we simply allowed the earth to take us back, to use our body for new life. When Gage’s human life came to an end, I would follow him. I knew it deep in the core of me already—there was no question. He was my mate.

🥺🥺🥺

⚡️ spoilers end ⚡️

in conclusion, i want a rycke. i want a winged gentle monster who will kill for me ♡

I am so obsessed with this series it's sickening. It just keeps getting better and better. Oh how I wished I started my reading journey back when they came out. They said I love you way too fast but other than that I loved this book.

Aury is just the sweetest monster

“I read one of the others while I waited for you.” While he’d waited for me. Like he’d actually felt the lack of my presence.

I love how Gage always seemed to calm Aury

Aury was the opposite of chaos. He was like a… a calm, steady island in the middle of a tumultuous sea. He was soft and soothing. A balm.

I didn’t care what he could become. I didn’t see that monstrous face when I looked at Aury. This was my sweet, gentle, kind monster. He was still my Aury.

.“I knew he wouldn’t have gone far, because he would want to watch over you. So I just walked around until I got the sudden urge to flee in terror, which meant he was nearby.”.

I can't wait to read lilac's book. He reminded me of Lonan from The Folk series

“I’ve left something for you on the nightstand, but it’s not a big deal and when I come back, I don’t want you to mention it.” I frowned, looking up from my book. “What—” But he had already slipped out of the room. I looked over at the nightstand and froze when I saw the little wooden figurine on it. With big wings. One damaged.

I waaaaaaant a rycke. 😭💞
This is my favorite so far. The rycke is so cute. All monstrous are feared and treated to the worst. But they are cute and kind! We must protect him!! 😤☝🏻❤️
When I was reading the book i swear i felt the most peaceful vibe possible. And that's because of the mcs. They are so adorable.
It was great!

I read this book in approximately 10 minutes... I mean, not really but it felt that way. I ADORE this series, even though The Rycke was one of my least favorites so far. I feel sort of bad about that because Aury and Ghost were like too sweet together, and maybe my toxic trait is loving growling beasts (???). These two were like fluffy marshmallows with each other, and I really enjoyed their chemistry. Sure, the pacing felt a little slower for me, and I think some of the other couples had more heat, but I still pretty much couldn't put it down.

On to the next in the series!

This was just cute vibes all around. A story of two sweet, adorable beings who bond and find love among the Wastes.

Aury was the most cinnamon roll monster ever (most of the time), and I loved their sweet and gentle relationship.

«I didn’t care what he could become. I didn’t see that monstrous face when I looked at Aury. This was my sweet, gentle, kind monster. He was still my Aury.»

The plot was a little slower than the previous books — more focused on their relationship rather than action. The change of pace was nice, though. It fit their personalities, the ambience being a little softer and calmer.

My favorite bits had to be the Moth snippets. I’m sorry, but I love him way too much, and just got super excited every time he was on page. So cute.

CW and tropes(spoilers):
- Monster x human
- ‘Touch him you die’ (literally)
- Death, violence & gore
- Forked tongue
- Rimming
- Vers MCs

UUUUHHHH, HOW CAN I GO BACK IN TIME AND READ THIS AGAIN???

The plot
Gage, or more known as Ghost, is a raider in the Wastes. He lives in a camp and his job is to scavenge their surroundings. One day he comes across an injured monster in an abandoned military base. He just can't leave him there so he takes him to the camp with him. The monster is causing tension in their camp but Gage is just too interested in him to even care. Now, the military wants him and a stranger is lurking outside their camp, waiting for the right moment to put him back in chains. But Gage doesn't want that the monster leaves him.

The story
Yes please!! Okay obviously the Monstrous series is my favorite series of all time and I just LOVE Lily Mayne's stories. And the writing? Just excellent, my dude. I still hadn't gotten over how good Edin and Soul Eater were and Lily just came out of nowhere and BAM this piece of pure gold appeared! The story was VERY interesting and the world building was so amazing. The way Aury and Gage got to know each other *chef's kiss*. The chemistry between them was so real and burning hot. Sorry but I just can't describe with words how good this was. Seriously, if you haven't already, read it.

The characters
Why are they so cute! I loved Aury. He was so sweet and kind. The way he treated Gage and protected him. He was a bit shy and quiet but with some time he learned to trust Gage. Gage was so brave. He was hard-working and cared about others. They just couldn't be more perfect for each other. There were some side characters that I liked, too. Rig is Gage's best friend. I just loved how they were so close with each other. I definitely want to read his story. Lilac was a mysterious man with an emotionless face. But even though he seemed to have less feelings, I could see that he cared. He was a great character.

This was by far the most entertaining book so far. From those two crazy love birds to a variety of villains and entertaining side characters. There were tons of ups and downs and plenty of action.

I have a lot of respect for Anchor, when she put Cutter in his place I was applauding in my mind. But even if I understand her need to find Cat, I wish she’d lay off Ghost. In the same instance I wish he’d learn how to say no.

One is the sweetest, shyest schoolboy. I’m enjoying Ghost’s confusion to One’s reactions to him. I’m hoping he’ll pull his head out after One finally saw his face. It’s beyond me how you can confuse that awe for anything but adoration.

How about we shoot Cutter with his own damn gun!

Omfg they are so freaking cute!!

Holy shit!!! Well that was just wild and heart breaking. God, I feel so bad for him.

Aury and Gage win for the most intense couple. The neediness, the frantic fucking and just the overwhelming love they have for each other is addicting.

All in all this is just the sweetest love story. From cloyingly sweet to bittersweet and everything in between.

All books in this series so far have been wins for me.

This third installment takes us to the raider camp in Nebraska that Wyn had tried to send Danny too in the first book. Although we don't get to see Danny and Wyn or Edin and Hunter in this, this book stood up on its own.

In this one we open with meeting Ghost, which is his raider name, although his real name is Gage, who is out on the road in the wastes with his best friend, Rig, and they are at the military base that Wyn set the monsters free in in the first book, which has long been decimated and empty...or almost empty.

When they're there, they come across a rycke, although they don't know it at the time. He's just a "beastie" as they call the monsters.

The rycke is chained up and hurt and not even talking, and both Gage and Rig let him go and offer to take him with them back to their raider camp to help him heal.

Gage is intrigued by the rycke right away, but the rycke seems uncomfortable around him, so he tries to keep his distance.

But once they get to the camp, and the rycke gets help and starts to heal, he starts to speak too, and he tells Gage that his name is Aury.

They're both pretty smitten from the start, but kind of dance around each other for awhile. Also, there's tension in the camp as some of the raiders, especially one of them, don't want Aury in the camp and actually despise him and think he's truly a monster.

But Gage is spending all this time with him and all he's seeing a sweet, kind and lovely person who doesn't want to hurt anyone, and they completely fall in love.

Of course...the reason the rycke is so feared comes to light eventually when Gage is sent out by the camp leader, Anchor (who used to rule it with Cat, who we met briefly in the previous book), who is still determined to find Cat who has been missing for 6 months, and she hasn't given up - but is using Gage to be the one who goes out for clues on how to find him all the time, not giving a thought to the danger it puts Gage in.

Anchor asks Gage to go to this other raider camp where their leaders are fairly reasonable as well. And this time, Aury comes along...

Only when they get there, the previous leaders have been killed by a roaming raider group, who have taken over the camp...

And when one of them punch Gage, therefore hurting them....well...then Aury becomes....different. And bigger. And deadly...and truly monstrous. We learn just why ryckes are so feared.

But it's like Aury couldn't control it, and he's horrified once he comes back to himself....and Gage is understandably horrified too, and fearful and angry and scared, but...he eventually comes around to accepting Aury and that he didn't mean to, that he couldn't control it, but he believes they can't stay at the camp, because of what Aury could turn into at any moment.

When Aury is in his normal form, he's the kindest and sweetest guy, but when Gage - and Gage alone - is threatened, he turns into this huge, monstrous, unbeatable thing, and both of them don't want to risk Aury accidentally killing others in their raider camp.

But after some angst and some struggles, when that one raider who totally despised Aury - and Gage because Gage was so close with Aury - almost accidentally kills Gage, Aury turns and almost kills him, but Gage is able to talk to him and bring him down and stop him from doing it. There blooms hope for them yet after this.

When Rig, Gage's best friend, leaves with this awful lady Mary - she was who was in the trailer that had two monsters dragging it in the front with another grey big one chained to the side with a cage on it's head and dragging a hammer - who had come to their camp because she wanted Aury for her "collection of monsters", after things are squared away with Aury, they both agree to go and find Rig to make sure he is okay and bring him back to their camp.

Gage says that along the way Aury can really work on and see if he can control himself when he changes/if he changes, and if he can learn to do it, they'll come back to the camp for good, as it would mean they are safe with Aury there.

So I'm sure we'll see these two in Rig's book, as this ends right before they're gonna leave to go after him. But these two are pretty settled, happy and in love at the end of this, despite Aury still having to learn to gain full control of his shift.

I adored this from the first. I loved Gage and Aury's chemistry, the story was interesting and kept me on my toes, and these two were just so sweet and wonderful together.

I definitely recommend this. It's a wild ride but a fun one. Two MASSIVE thumbs up from me!

Also I'm excited to revisit Wyn and Danny in the next one, and then after that is Rig's book, which I'm excited for. He was also a sweetie, a big marshmallow (and seemed to be into the big gray monster with a cage on it's head, so interested to see how that love story will play out.)

May 2023 audio review- 3 1/2 rounded up

I love this series but unfortunately my niggles about some of the writing stand out even more in the audios.

Michael is such an excellent narrator and all of his voices in this are great. But for the life of me I can’t figure out why, when he’s narrated sex scenes in other series so well, this series he’s REALLY awkward with them. Like, they’re painful to listen to. It’s a bummer.

But I will keep listening because I do love this series and I do love Michael. Not sure how Seraph is going to work when Lilac sounds like a bored teenager. 🤣

October 2022 re-read- no change in my review except that I wish I could tell my past self Lily REALLY loves the word/s beastie/s 😭🤦🏻😬🥴🤣

————————

Nearly perfect

This was practically the perfect book. Between Aury and all things about him and worrywart Gage and the side characters and the villains and the sex… it was so so good. I really really adore this series and the world Lily has created. It’s the perfect way to escape. I cannot wait to read more.

My only complaint is the inordinate amount of times the word “beastie/s” was used. Holy hot Hannah I really hope that term isn’t used that much in the following books. It was just too much.

Take out the overuse of that word, and this book was fantastic.

3 stars ⭐️ Don't judge me, but I really like reading how monsters and humans have sex with each other!

I liked the romance between Gage and Aury. Aury’s name is beautiful, and he was the kindest monster out there in Wastes. I liked how he was kind and sweet to everyone despite his infamous title of the deadliest species of monster, the rycke.

But I don't know, I was bored out of my mind in the middle of the book. I loved everything the chemistry, the relationship that happened between Gage and Aury, but I had expected more.

5/5 ⭐  What a ride!

I'm going to write my review in English though my native language is Spanish. I need to improve my English so here we go! 😊

The Rycke starts after Wyn/Danny and Edin/Hunter adventures. Despite these characters aren't included in this book, we have links between all novels so this can't be read standalone because there will be gaps in the plot.

◾ Aury is found by Ghost and Rig, two raiders in The Wastes who are scarvenging and trying to locate Cat (character previosly known in Edin). The interesting thing is that Aury is in the military compound rampaged by Wyn in the first novel and The Rycke is a little bit wounded so... our raiders decide to take him into the camp and this decision will bring consequences.

  ◾ Positives:
✔️ An improvement in the world building: the author has added new elements in the plot besides the military stuff. This time we can explore the raiders world and their lifestyle.
✔️ More characters: something that I disliked in the previous novels was the lack of characters besides our main characters. Now, we have a lot of new ones like Anchor, Lilac 💜 , Moth 🖤  and the infamous Mary 🐍 😈 . All of them add more dynamism to the plot. Soul Eater and Edin endured a lack of characters that affects negatively the narrative rhythm.
✔️ Anxiety disorder inclusion: I specially love this aspect because I struggle with this disorder and I identified myself with Ghost along the book.
✔️ Love among books: loved that Aury and Gage got attached to each other whils they read books in their room 💖  Such a romantic detail 🥰

 ◾ Negatives:
❌ The absence of the previous pairings: Lily spoiled us a lot in Edin when She decided include Danny and Wyn in the plot. For this reason I've felt their absence here (a lot 😿 ).
❌ Known more of Mary and her menagerie: I'm so interested in this plot and I think that the author will adress this topic in Gloam 🤞
❌ The book ends 🥀: as a joke 😹

I can't wait to bite into Gloam, but I think that I've to read Wyn first.

So, I think the best way to describe how I feel about this is to quote our dear friend Rig: "You two are so cute it makes my teeth hurt." Yes, that's basically it.

“…When Gage’s human life came to an end, I would follow him.” 🫠🖤🫠🖤

AURY YOU KILLED MY TEETH.

I loved every second, and the introduction of the new characters… let’s say I don’t wanna sleep anymore to keep reading and fucking reading. MOTH? Oh my, I don't know him yet but I'm already a goner.

I NEED TO KNOW. 🗣️🗣️

We hear about Raider camps in previous books so it was interesting to get a book with the perspective of a raider. The romance between Ghost and Aury was really sweet and was a nice juxtaposition against their harsh post-apocalyptic world.

However, where the ball was dropped was the third act conflict and even the resolution. It didn't feel well thought out, it was just there for some unnecessary drama. And the way it was resolved... like what was even the point??

Anyway, The Rycke was enjoyable and expanded the world nicely but hopefully the next book will be a winner for me like Edin!

My comfort characters have never experienced comfort a day in their lives.

FINALLY we get to meet the elusive, the mysterious, the stunning rycke, Aury, in all his glory! I knew that when Wyn mentioned him as the veritable boogeyman of the monster world, his story was going to be a showstopper.

But our terrifying monster turns out to be the softest and sweetest creature to ever exist and HOW FUCKING PERFECT IS THAT!?! What do I always say about broken boys!? That's right - that I LOVE THEM WITH THE FIRE OF A THOUSAND SUNS AND WOULD DIE FOR THEM. Aury is paired with Ghost - our chicken-loving, anxiety-driven people pleaser; another soft boy who needs to be protected at all costs.

I LOVE THEM AND I FUCKING LOVE THIS SERIES cause the worldbuilding!? Absolutely POPPED THE FUCK OFF in this one, babe. Pieces of the puzzle are coming together and we're still getting new pieces but I already know that the final image is going to be absolutely glorious.

Also, idk how but Lily manages to make me love the side characters just as much as the MCs (if not more). And I know some of those side characters are eventually going to be the MCs in their own books but they already stand out so much! RIG? MOTH!? LILAC!!?! OBSESSED.

Normally, I don't just burst through a series like this but there's something about this one that's really doin' it for me right now. It's hitting that literary g-spot that makes me want to just raw-dog every book and bonus story I can get my hands on until my eyes start to bleed so fuck it, ON TO THE NEXT.

Another beautiful instalment in Lily Mayne’s #monstrous series. This time it’s Gage and Aury’s story.

One/Aury is the rycke, the most feared of all the monsters. Ghost/Gage is a timid young raider living in the Wastes, surviving day to day.

This is the ultimate opposites attract mm romance and I loved it 🥰.

Medium angst, medium steam 🔥🔥.

Recommended.

This was kinda slow. But waiting for the mysterious Aury to show his nature was interesting enuf to keep reading. Took forever to get to the MM action tho... Liked that it went "both ways" this time. Was hoping for some of that with Hunter and Edin in book 2, given Hunter is a big guy too, but wasn't meant to be... sigh.

On to the next!

(Wonder whether Rig and Charlie from book 2 would get their own book)...

Some pretty cool fan art out there:

My favourite of the series so far. Im such a sucker for hurt/comfort and this had it in spades. I really liked the dystopian raider POV and getting to meet the other characters with future books coming up kept me interested in every scene. I liked the mix of romance vs plot in this more than the others, the writing felt stronger to me. And wings! Who doesn’t wish their lover had wings??

Okay, I guess I’m giving up on this series. I’m no longer interested in this monster / human smut. 🤷‍♀️

No me veo capaz.

-No me debes nada”.
