Secrets are revealed and forbidden sparks ignited in this sizzling Sunrise Cove tale of enemies to lovers, redemption, missing treasures, and love.
Anna Moore didn’t just wake up one day and decide to go on a wild quest — especially since her life no longer lends itself to wild anything — so how in the world does she end up racing against the clock with Owen Harris, a sexy, enigmatic adventurist, to prove her beloved dad innocent of stealing a million-dollar necklace?
It’s all Wendy’s fault. Her older, bossy sister, who’s seven months pregnant and on bed rest in their small Lake Tahoe hometown, is desperate to clear their dad’s name. Owen though is convinced he’s guilty as hell and wants to return the jewelry back to its rightful owner—his elderly great aunt. Together they go on a scavenger hunt for clues to the past (with Wendy remotely along for the ride via an ear bud, supplying a running wry commentary to boot).
On opposing sides and suspicious of each other as they are, Anna and Owen still can’t deny the inexplicable and explosive chemistry between them on this heart-stopping adventure, the outcome of which will prove the necklace isn’t the only thing stolen — their hearts have been as well.

What a great book. You don't have to read the series in order just jump in and enjoy. This book has so many great characters that you will find yourself laughing out laugh. I highly recommend.
A possible stolen coin is found and Owen and Anna fight over who is the rightful owner.
To be fully honest, this was definitely not my most favorite Jill Shalvis book. I didn’t really feel like Anna and Owen had very much character development for the first half and I found it very slow.
The ending of the book was very fast paced and wild, but I am not sure that it really made up for the beginning.
To be honest my favorite part of the whole book was that Anna’s sister is having triplets and she keeps thinking of outrageous names for all 3 of them that made me laugh. My favorite names were obviously Phoebe, Monica, and Rachel.
Obviously I will read this author again, I have read a lot of her books, but this one did not meet my expectations.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for this free advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Second read: So, SO good! Jill Shalvis you totally rock! A very enjoyable read. Can't wait to listen to the audiobook! This one's a keeper that I'll definitely read again and again so I'm going to my own copy of the final version.
First read: Many thanks to NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! This was SO good! Welcome to Snarky Snarktown! It was funny and snarky, with awesome characters and a great love story with a bit of a mystery as well. The highlight was the interactions between Anna, her sister, Wendy, and Owen.
As an extra bonus, Jill Shalvis had very little profanity in this story and the love scenes were more PG-13 than R.
I loved this story and highly recommend it for a fun rollicking good time!
I want to express firstly that I have not gone to the grumpy side despite how the following review might read. Jill Shalvis' latest entry in her The Sunrise Cove series, The Summer Escape, had the extreme misfortune of being read after Kate Clayborn's amazing, heartwarming, perfect rom-com from last year, Georgie, All Along. If you love rom-coms and have not read it, I heartily (big on heart) recommend it. That said, if I had read The Bright Spot by Jill Shalvis (see my February 2024 review) after Georgie, it would have fared just as it did in my review because at no point in time did I think that Shalvis was phoning it in, unlike with The Summer Escape.
I am not sure why The Summer Escape was called The Summer Escape. 🤷🏻♀️ And I am not sure why the blurb refers to a race against the clock or a heart-stopping adventure. What promised to be entertaining, Anna Moore as private investigator, fell flat because Anna never seems to do any investigating and the mystery that I was enthusiastic about reading was not present for 90% of the novel.
What The Summer Escape is is a romance in which Anna Moore and Owen Harris, two commitment-phobes fall in love in under a week and then talk endlessly to each other and others about how it won't work out. Throw in Anna's sister, Wendy, who is pregnant with triplets and is interfering and bossy (and imho unlikable), and a novel most definitely not for me was created.
During the last 10% of the novel, the mystery is somewhat salvaged but there's nothing mysterious and the climax is expected but raises logic questions that I won't address because spoilers.
There were some funny snarky moments but for me they couldn't rescue a story in which nothing much happens.
So. The Summer Escape is not for me. I hope it's a one off for one of my favorite authors. I will mention that a lot of other reviewers loved it, so let's call it a your-mileage-may-vary.
Many thanks to Avon Books for sending me a copy.
ps I loathed every moment of writing this review except for designing the accompanying image in Canva.
5 - "Sometimes the line between self-care and self-destruction is a fine one..." Stars!
I love pretty much everything Jill Shalvis writes, and The Summer Escape is no exception. Book five in The Sunrise Cove see's sisters Anna, Wendy and Adventure guide Owen searching for missing treasure whilst dealing with their own hang-ups and issues.
Anna and Wendy are close, Wendy being the eldest and pseudo mother to her younger sister feels the need to try and micromanage her life, something that's proving more difficult than normal as she is stuck on bed-rest whilst carrying triplets. That doesn't stop her from ordering a Go-Pro and a tracking App in order to keep tabs on her Private Investigator sister. A profession that comes in handy when a stolen coin, found in their late fathers possessions turns out to be from a stolen set. Enter Owen, whose Aunt is the owner of said lost items.
The chemistry between Anna and Owen, is molten hot from the first meeting, and progresses to smoulder across the chapters as their search for the truth leads them in a few different directions, initially Anna looking to clear her fathers name, while Owen is looking to point the finger. But as the investigation proceeds all is definitely not as initially assumed.
I loved this book, Wendy and Anna's sisterly banter had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. Owen and Anna together had the right amount of Commitment-phobe/Could-this-be-the one shenanigans, and the story itself felt a little different from Shalvis's recent writing in that the drama was a little less and the comedy was dialled up a bit. I loved it so much I read it in a day.
ARC generously provided by the Author, in exchange for the above honest review.
Initially upon finishing The Summer Escape, I was a bit torn. My first thought was WTH did I just read? I know in Jill Shalvis's bibliography she has more of these titles where she blends her signature romantic comedy/women's fiction writing with a few dashes of mystery-but I've yet to read those. So this was my first foray into yet another genre blend done by our great queen. As the hours pass since I've finished the book though, I am coming to realize that while slightly different tonally, The Summer Escape was still another really good read. We still get Jill's hilarious dialogue. We still get the family and friends who become family that we quickly fall in love with and make ours. While I wouldn't say this was as fun a read as the previous 5 books in the serious, I think the mystery element heightened up the stakes and the question of how the hell will these 2 ever end up together is really pushed to the limit! Our heroine has found something in her father's belongings that the hero is positive belongs to his aunt and is looking at the heroine with the side-eye of like...was it stolen? They work together to hunt down the truth. In true Jill Shalvis fashion, our heroine Anna is tough, loves hard on those she lets close to her and can be stubborn as hell. Anna's pregnant with triplets sister Wendy added some fun comedic parts with the book.
This was a great book! I always seem to enjoy myself when I pick up one of Jill Shalvis’s books. She can create characters that you can’t help but love and feel like family. That is exactly how I felt about this book. Anna, Owen, and Wendy were all amazing and I was quickly invested in seeing good things happen for all three of them. I am only mad at myself for waiting so long to read this one.
Wendy, who is on bedrest and heavily pregnant with triplets, convinces her sister Anna to clear their father’s name from a heist. Owen believes that Anna’s father may be responsible for the theft of his great aunt’s jewelry and some valuable coins. The pair team up to try to get to the bottom of things. Since Wendy can’t leave the house, she often convinces her sister to let her listen in during the investigation remotely.
I really liked Anna and Owen together. I felt like they had a lot of chemistry and their personalities seemed to match up very well. They were expecting very different outcomes from the investigation but were still able to work together without any trouble. Wendy could be a bit much but she added a few laughs and I loved seeing her relationship with Anna grow during this story.
Andi Arndt is one of my favorite narrators with good reason. She does an amazing job of voicing both the male and female characters. She was able to bring just the right amount of emotion to her reading to really bring this story to life. I think that her delivery of the more comical moments of the story heightened the humor of those moments as well. I am certain that her narration added to my overall enjoyment of this story.
I would not hesitate to recommend this book to others. While this book is part of the Sunrise Cove series, I believe that it reads as a stand-alone. I enjoyed going on this journey with Anna and Owen as they found their happily ever after.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Avon Books.
I first want to thank NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I thought I had been looking forward to reading this... but it was honestly an eyeroll from the beginning. They kept saying that there was "undeniable chemistry" but was the chemistry even in the room with us? By the end, the couple was cute but it was still cringe and felt forced. The best part was the rounds of trying to declare names for Wendy's triplets. I feel like we lost the plot of finding the necklace for the middle 40% of the book.. and then it was like oh right! And the answer is right here! Let's go on this wild adventure and admit our true feelings and almost die and then live happily ever after!
I wish I could have liked this more. Every time I picked it up to read I didn't want to. By the time I got like 50% in I wanted to DNF so badly but wanted to stick it out. I'm glad I did, the ending wasn't Horrible I just was wildly disappointed in this book.
This is part of the Sunrise Cove series but can be read as a standalone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the writing, the story, and the characters. Anna and Wendy's dad recently passed away. While going through his things they come across a coin. They get it appraised and it's worth a ton. The small town finds out about this treasure, and Owen, who owns an adventure tour business, hears of this and insists it belongs to his aunt. With petty theft in his past, Anna and Wendy want to clear their dad's name and find out how this coin came to be in his possession. Wendy is on pregnancy bedrest, so Owen and Anna set off to find out the truth.
These characters felt real, and I loved watching Anna and Owens' romance and connection grow. The mystery was suspenseful and there were parts to laugh at as well. Great summer read!
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
What a disappointment. Even for a fluff book, this had a main female character that was annoyingly weak and whiny. Best part of the book was the kooky pregnant sister hiding food all the time.
“You two have a vibe” “Like we want to smother each other with a pillow?” “Like you should get married”
In my experience the following are things that all Jill Shalvis books contain: * The best, most endearing characters * Witty banter and laugh out loud antics * Lovable fur-babies * Happily ever afters
I love all of Jill’s books so much and The Summer Escape is everything I hoped for and more!
It’s hard to say which part of this book I liked best -- Anna, because she is vulnerable even when she doesn’t want to be; Owen, my favorite new book boyfriend; Wendy and Hayden for being the best side characters ever; or Turbo, Clawdia and Jennifur, because all stories need adorably named pets. If I had to pick though, I actually think my favorite part was the names Jill came up with for Wendy and Hayden’s triplets: Buffy, Cordelia, Willow; Blanche, Rose, Dorthy and Wilma Betty, Pebbles just to name a few. This story has it all, family love, intrigue, a treasure hunt and a beautiful happily ever after.
The story begins when Anna and her sister Wendy discover a rare coin among their deceased father’s belongings. The coin, it turns out, is connected to a million dollar necklace (which was also stolen) belonging to Owen’s precious Aunt Ruby. Both Owen and Anna vow to find and return the necklace but while Owen is convinced that Anna’s father has something to do with the heist Anna is trying to clear her father’s name. Through all the twists and turns Anna and Owen’s quest for the necklace leads them down many different paths -- the most important being the one that leads them to each other.
This book was silly and sweet and so well written. Anna and Owen’s chemistry was evident from the start and I couldn’t wait for them to fall for each other. I also loved the relationship between Anna and Wendy. Their devotion to one another as sisters and as best friends is so beautiful.
I highly recommend The Summer Escape and all Jill Shalvis books! Her series are some of my absolute favorites!
This one reminded me exactly why I adore Jill Shalvis. I can always count on her to write a heartwarming story that will make me laugh, make me swoon and make me want to befriend her characters. Besides those must haves this one also had a dash of mystery which is something new and it was such a fun addition. Anna and Owen have an immediate connection but their push and pull relationship kept me wanting more and the author delivered the perfect amount of angst to keep me invested. Anna’s sister, Wendy and her husband, Hayden are serious goals. Their relationship was adorable and Wendy and Anna’s sisterly bond was so sweet. Some of my favorite scenes were when Wendy was on the phone eavesdropping since she was on bed rest, too funny! No one does witty dialogue better than JS and not only did Anna and Owen have great banter, the sisters did as well. If you like cozy romances with a side of spice, all the good vibes and humor and a beautiful setting this was excellent.
Thank you Netgalley and Avon & Harper Voyager for this ARC! This was such a fun summer read. When Anna discovers a million dollar necklace in her late father’s things, she finds herself in a position where she is trying to clear his name as he’s been accused of stealing it. Owen, the accuser, is a hot adventurist who believes the necklace was stolen from his aunt. They end up working together to try and piece together the puzzle of the necklaces origin. Wendy is Anna’s older sister who is pregnant with triplets. Bored from bed rest, she has to insert herself into the entire journey. She was my favorite character, and was hilarious! This book was so much fun. I enjoyed every second of it. The scavenger hunting was so entertaining for me. It gave me all the feel good, summer feels and was a light easy read. This is part of her Summer Cove series and they can be read as standalones! 🏴☠️
This was an entertaining story. I know this is a romance but my favorite part was the relationship between the sisters. Funny, witty, and comfortable is how I'd describe it. Thanks to the publisher for an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. I recommend this novel!
another fabulous jill shalvis read! i loved this one and it’s definitely up there as one of my favorites!
• really loved anna + wendy’s sister relationship. • i laughed every time they talked about the babies + made up different names each time. • anna + owen were 😍 • wendy + hayden were adorable. • loved that we got a little mystery with this one.
this is another great read to add to your summer tbr ☺️
The Summer Escape is Jill Shalvis at her best - full of emotion, angst, laughter and tears. Anna and Owen are all wrong for each other, and yet that seems to make them perfect for each other. Working together to solve a decades old crime, starting on opposite sides of the issue, they fight their attraction, fears of commitment and abandonment in full force, as they hunt for answers. The story is spellbinding and heartwarming, with a bit of suspense and plenty of love. I couldn’t put it down.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for this ARC! This is a sweet story about two sisters, a mysterious treasure, a controversial past, pending birth of triplets . . and the journey unfolds. I loved the humor between the main characters and they are likable people. Throughout the book the pregnant sister is bored, on bedrest, hungry all the time and the silly names she gives the babies while waiting their pending births is hilarious. The mystery is eventually solved and it's quite suspenseful. I thought the author did a great job wrapping this into a little over 300 pages. Publication day is June 11, 2024.
It actually pains me to give this rating. I felt no connection to the characters or between the characters. In fact, I found them all fairly annoying. I tried to take a couple breaks, but can’t bring myself to get back to reading it so it’s a DNF. But Jill is one of my favorite authors so I’m not giving up on future books!
To read a Jill Shalvis book is to get lost in a world with wonderful characters that will make you laugh and maybe tear up a bit. Her characters always have stand out personalities and an ability to take on conflict and learn from it.
Thank you in advance to the author and publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
A mystery brings two lonely hearts together in The Summer Escape. Jill Shalvis is an author I’ve enjoyed for years, but I had mixed feelings about her latest Sunrise Cove outing.
Anna is a private investigator whose latest case is deeply personal. She found an antique coin of her father’s but it may be stolen. She’s joined on her quest for the truth by the man whose great-aunt may have been robbed. Owen is an adventurer who, like Anna, carries hidden scars. They both have felt lost and alone with very few people they can rely on. Anna doesn’t like to trust others and Owen never fully lets down his walls. But of course, the two of them are inescapably drawn to one another.
Shalvis’s writing usually draws me in from the start but with The Summer Escape I had a bit of a harder time. Anna and Owen’s chemistry didn’t spark for me much at the beginning, likely because they were overshadowed by the third main character, Anna’s sister, Wendy. Wendy is eight months pregnant with triplets and is on bed rest, but that doesn’t stop this larger-than-life personality from chiming in. Shalvis often includes over-the-top friends or family members in her stories and Wendy is one of the more lively and persistent ones. Whether you find this charming or annoying is really reader preference, and I was in the latter camp.
At about the halfway mark The Summer Escape heats up and it feels like Anna and Owen find their footing. Their chemistry gets more fun and flirty and the story feels like it finds its focus. The mystery comes to a satisfying conclusion and the love story ends with a happily ever after that is charming. I enjoyed Shalvis’s writing and I liked that there were emotional hurdles to conquer that balanced out the frothy humor and social media-inspired quips. That being said, I could have used a bit more from the world – it felt like something was missing from the story to make it feel whole.
The Summer Escape is the sixth book in the Sunrise Cove series but it completely stands on its own. If you know Shalvis, you know that there are going to be some scene-stealing animals along for the ride and they were absolutely too cute for words. Honestly, I would have enjoyed much more time with Turbo, Clawdia, and Jennifur. Adorable animals aside, this was an OK read for me overall. It’s not bad, but I have enjoyed so many other wonderful books by Shalvis that it was a bit of a disappointment.

"The Summer Escape," the sixth installment of the Sunrise Cove series, works well as a standalone. Jill Shalvis delights her readers with a story that weaves together romance, mystery, suspense, and family drama, all while delving into the 'enemies to lovers' trope. Readers who enjoy this combination are in for a treat.
"The Summer Escape" features Anna Moore, a private investigator, and Owen Harris, an adventurer. The story begins with Anna and her sister Wendy grieving their father's death. Amidst sorting through his belongings, they stumble upon a valuable coin from the nineteenth century. Urged by Wendy, Anna embarks on an investigation that casts doubt on their father's legacy and thrusts her into a world filled with suspense, danger and romance.
Enters Owen Harris who learns of the coin, which so happened to be a part of a collection stolen from his aunt years ago. His aunt suffers from dementia, and he wants to find her lost treasure, hoping it would bring her a measure of comfort. Anna is the key to finding answers and so he hires her on the condition that he partners with her on the investigation.
I found this to be a delightful read. I've loved every book in the Sunrise Cove series, and The Summer Escape is a fantastic addition. Anna and Owen are delightful characters. Their playful banter and intense chemistry were a pleasure to follow. Despite their attempts to fight the attraction, it became increasingly difficult, particularly as they worked together to unravel the mystery.
They faced danger and emotional turmoil throughout their journey. It was gratifying to see how they overcame mutual distrust, which allowed them to work effectively as a team. Additionally, observing them grow closer and conquer their insecurities and fears was truly heartwarming.
Anna's dynamic with her sister added depth to the story. Their exchanges were enjoyable, though Wendy's meddling in Anna's affairs was annoying at various points in the story. "The Summer Escape" provided the perfect escape while ending on a positive note. I wholeheartedly recommend fans of the author and readers of the genre to add it to their summer reading list.
3.25 stars The Summer Escape is the 6th book in the Sunrise Cove series by Jill Shalvis, though this can definitely be read as a standalone. This is a sweet, summer romance between Anna and Owen, with a side of mystery.
The two team up to uncover the mystery of the missing necklace and coin, a keepsake Owen’s grandmother lost and Anna’s late father is purported to have stolen. The two, though being on opposing sides, form a reluctant friendship as they work to unravel this mystery. Emotions are running high as disconcerting issues are raised about Anna’s beloved father. We also witness the tender bond between Owen and his aunt who raised him, who is losing the battle against her memory issues. Despite all odds, including personal pain from the past and resolutions to stay single, this working relationship between Anna and Owen eventually becomes something deeper and more lasting.
We also get to know Wendy, Anna’s older sister who is supremely pregnant with triplets. She is a bit bossy, having had a major hand in raising her little sister, but she’s also funny and has a good-heart. I appreciated her growth arc because at first I found her quite controlling and really didn’t care for her very much. But the bond and obvious love between the two sisters became evident and was nothing short of inspiring, and a charming addition to the story.
I did find the climatic argument towards the end of the story to be petty and overly dramatic, and I wasn’t a fan of the gentle, but very present men-ridiculing and demeaning that was weaved throughout the narrative. Though a bit steamier than I prefer, and rather predictable, The Summer Escape is nonetheless, an enjoyable, feel-good story.
The Summer Escape is signature Jill Shalvis: small-town, adorable siblings relationship with the usual love/exasperation dynamics, main characters who fall hard for each other, and all of it, this time, with a mystery/adventure for them. I really enjoyed reading this story! I know that a Shalvis story is a guaranteed good time, one of few authors who writes consistently great stories.
Thank you to Headline Eternal for the ARC via Netgalley UK. All opinions are my own.
This was a light and fluffy summer romance, with a treasure hunt plot included! When Anna finds an old coin in her father's things after he passes, Owen realizes it's a coin from his great aunt's stolen collection. When they team up to fund the stolen treasure and clear her father's name, feelings develop despite neither wanting a relationship.
I wanted more investigation and treasure-hunting action, but this was more romance-focused than I anticipated. It was a little chaotic with multi-POVs told from the third person, and some of the characters weren't that likable. But overall, it was fun and easy with an HEA for everyone!

This book is a little different than the others I have read in the Sunrise Cove series; those tend to have more of a quirky small town/neighbors vibe, and there are several recurring characters and familiar places. I didn’t recognize these characters from past books, and it was a slightly different type of story….but different in a VERY good way.
Central to this story is a mystery - a mystery of stolen coins/jewelry, and whether or not the main character’s father was the thief. Anna’s father recently passed away after struggling with an illness that he also kept from his daughters, so they are questioning what they knew about him. Anna’s sister Wendy is home bound and pregnant with triplets…and a relative of the woman missing the jewels shows up asking for Anna’s help in finding them.
I like that the characters don’t take things too seriously - there is a lot of sarcasm and joking in the dialogue. I also loved the bond between the sisters, and that even through their struggles, their love is apparent. And the connection between Anna and Owen is undeniable.
I didn’t want to put this one down - I loved the story, and the characters.
