~ Velvette during the song, Respectless |
Velvette is a major antagonist of the musical adult animated series Hazbin Hotel.
She is a childish but powerful Overlord of Hell and a member of a trio of Overlords known as "the Vees" along with Vox and Valentino. While Vox is focused on technology and Valentino on pornography, Velvette's theme is social media, being an important social influencer in Hell's media.
She is voiced by Lilli Cooper.
Appearance[]
Velvette is a slim demon with cedar-brown skin, and long curly hair kept into pigtails with bangs by black hair ties. Her hair is colored in a desire-red that features the insides colored in a dark navy-blue, and white swirled-streaks on her pigtails and one on her bangs.
Her eyes have white irises, red sclera and slit pupils, and her makeup consists of burgundy eyeshadow on her eyelids, and black lipstick on her lips with a strip across the center of her mouth, and fangs inside.
Velvette's clothing is that of white skull-shaped earrings, and a sleeveless navy-blue coat with burgundy lining and two desire hearts on the left side of the fur collar (similar to the ones on Valentino's). Her coat is usually worn over a sleeveless, black turtlenecked crop-top that includes two desire hearts on the chest. Her set of loose-pants are colored in navy-blue and desire-red in a striped-pattern, held by a black belt with a white heart-shaped buckle.
For footwear, she wears heeled black shoes with white poms on the top. Velvette accessorizes with black-striped fingerless opera gloves with alternating colors - white for her right glove and desire for her left.
Pilot[]
In the pilot, Velvette sported a doll-like appearance with desire and burgundy hair with a white streak on her bangs - her pigtails are noticeably messier in appearance and it has been held by black and white frilled hair ties.
On the lower part of her eyes, she appears to wear white dripping clown eyeliner with a white strip across her eyes.
In addition to her clothing, she sports a pimped-out, tea-length dress that is colored in white, black and desire. Her dress features short puffed sleeves, along with black triangle and desire heart patterns located at the bottom.
Her fingerless gloves appear to be longer, and they are instead desire and white striped. She also wore black tights and desire flats with white poms on top.
Personality[]
Velvette is the energetic, stylish and trendy type who is always up-to-date with the latest trends and technology. Faustisse, an illustrator for the show, has described her as being a "very crazy person". She's also obsessed with taking selfies.
In the actual full series, Velvette is a smug and haughty person who sees herself and the other Vees (but mostly herself), as superior to the other Overlords, including Alastor, Zestial and Carmilla Carmine. She has no regrets in blatantly disrespecting Zestial and berating Carmilla although she makes a good point about why the Overlords should fight against the Angels. She is also shown to be ageist, as she makes derogatory remarks and insults to Carmilla and Zestial during the meeting with the Overlords. She is also shown to not be that good of a boss similar to Vox and Valentino as she disregards the feelings of her models and has them destroy any outfit she dislikes. Even when Valentino tears apart her best model in his rage, her only concern is starting the show on time, saying it "can't wait for that bitch to pull herself back together". Velvette also doesn’t seem to retain much of her pilot counterpart’s personality aside from her possibly still being crazy.
She seems to be affectionate towards her fellow Vees, taking a selfie with Vox, telling him "kisses darling" over the phone, and later hugging him and Valentino before recording them making out.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Nothing is known of Velvette's past as a human. When she died in an unknown year and went to Hell, reborn as a demon, she became one of the most powerful demons in Hell, becoming a big name in the fashion and social media industries. She would eventually become partner to Vox and Valentino, who controlled Hell's television and film industries respectively, controlling almost all of Hell's media as a team.
Season One[]
Pilot[]
Velvette is shown hiding in Valentino's porn studio, taking a selfie with Vox.
Radio Killed the Video Star[]
Velvette first appears in the series proper in episode two, calling Vox on her mobile and demanding he come and remove Valentino from her studio, the latter having barged in and wrecked the place. After Vox agrees to do so, Velvette orders one of her - noticeably scared - minions to model a variety of dresses in order to determine which one to wear during her live stream. She uses magic to quickly change the dresses on the model until she finds the one she likes. Later, Vox invites her and Valentino to discuss sabotaging the Hazbin Hotel to prevent Alastor from making a deal with Charlie. Thus, they decide to send Sir Pentious to act as a spy.
Scrambled Eggs[]
In the third episode, Velvette shows up late to a meeting of Overlords, throwing the severed head of an angel on their conference table. She presents this as proof that the angels are not invincible, and proposes forming an armed resistance against the next purge. When the others quickly reject this idea (stating they do not know just how the angel was killed and that risking their lives on a gamble would be foolish) she insults them, claiming they are old fashioned and outdated. She seems to deduce that Carmilla (who was, in fact, the one who killed the angel) is hiding something before storming out.
Powers and abilities[]
- Intelligence: She shows herself to be intelligent during the overlord meeting despite her arrogance.
- Potion-making: Velvette is said to be good with food and skilled in preparing potions. Sure enough, in "Radio Killed the Video Star" an advertisement is seen with her face on it for Love Potions.
- Clothing Manipulation: Velvette can use her magic to almost instantly change the outfits of those around her. While doing this, she can make the image of different outfits appear on people, and can swipe the air like she would a phone to instantly change their outfits, like an Instagram filter.
- Musical Talents: In Scrambled Eggs, she is seen to be able to sing.

Trivia[]
- Her up keep with and usage of modern technology is one of the main reasons why she and Vox get along quite well.
- Velvette's name means "a closely woven fabric of silk, cotton, or nylon, that has a thick short pile on one side". It's Latin root word, villus, means "shaggy cloth" or "tuft of hair".
- The color velvet often represents power and wealth, alluding to her status as an Overlord of Hell.
- Velvette is said to be good with food and potion-making.
- She is the only member of the Vees to not be the archenemy/arch-nemesis of a character (at least confirmed). However, she did teased Carmilla after she stand up to Velvette for insulting Zestial, making her the closest enemy.
- Based on the now deleted Voxtagram posts both Vox and Velvette have the same the height, which is 7'00.
- Out of all the Vees and Overlords in general, Velvette has the most drastic change in appearance compared to when she first appeared in the pilot.
- Velvette has been confirmed to be Hell’s youngest Overlord.
- Velvette's clothing is very similar to Vortex from Helluva Boss, both wear a black garment accompanied by a torn vest/coat and black pants. Both have a symbol of danger present, with Velvette wearing white skull-shaped earrings, while Vortex has a tattoo of a wild wolf on his left arm.
- Velvette is the most stable of the Vees, as she doesn't have a massive ego issue or insecurities like Vox, or prone to violent outbursts like Valentino. The worst Velvette ever does is insult others, regardless of their position in Hell's hierarchy.
- Despite this, she's still rather hypocritical as while she expressed confidence earlier on fighting the Exorcists, when Adam led the angels to attack the Hazbin Hotel (which likely could've threatened the whole city), Velvette still remained with the rest of the Vees in hiding, watching the battle via Vox's drones.
- However, she and the Hotel had different motivations for fighting against the Exorcists. The Hotel fought to protect the Hotel, the Hotel residents and employees, and also to possibly protect Hell. Velvette, on the other hand, wanted to fight to make a "power grab" over Hell or Pentagram City. Since Velvette and the Hotel had different motivations, Velvette stood behind with the Vees.

- The fact she calls herself a bitch shows Velvette is very aware of her own faults and flaws and attitude; though much like her lyrics say, she only cares about doing what she wants without concern.
- While her nationality has not been confirmed, her accent suggests that she is British.
- She’s shown to have hinges as part of her body when undressed as shown in Halloween 2024 merchandise of her and the other Vees.
