~ Carmilla Carmine describing the Exorcists’ ruthlessness. |
The Exorcists are the main antagonists of Season 1 of the adult animated series Hazbin Hotel.
They are angels of Heaven who descend down to purge the demons at the end of the year in Hell; their yearly visits are referred to as "Exterminations."
Information[]
The exorcists are, with the exception of Adam, an all-female group of angels dressed in elaborate LED masks who are tasked with traveling into Hell every year and going on a bloody massacre, killing as many demons and sinners as they can before returning to Heaven and waiting for the next year to arrive so they can repeat the cycle. Their exterminations aim to stop overpopulation in Hell, as it is only via angelic weapons that demons and sinners can permanently die. The exorcists greatly enjoy their role and are stated to be extremely sadistic creatures who take great pride in killing others.
While many accept the vicious cycle of death each year, things change when Hell's resident princess, Charlie Morningstar (daughter of none other than Lucifer himself), seeks an alternative to the annual purge in the form of the "Happy Hotel," a place she believes can redeem sinners and allow them to enter Heaven, thus solving Hell's overpopulation issues without resorting to erasing others.
Notes[]
While most of the exorcists have not yet appeared in person, they are by far the greatest danger to Hell. Their regular purges also cause angelic weaponry to be left behind - these weapons are used by demons and Overlords to erase their competition. Thus, even without direct conflict, the exorcists play a massive role in bringing lasting danger to Hell. (It is unknown if they purposefully or accidentally leave their weapons. Since they have been stated to be sadistic creatures who enjoy death, it is reasonable to assume that they leave these weapons for residents of Hell to find and thus cause more destruction).
The deceased former leader of the exorcists, Adam (revealed in episode 1 to be is Adam himself) , was a sadistic and aloof being who considered himself infallible and righteous regarding the slaughter of demons, claiming they themselves are to blame for their plight. Despite this, he also blatantly admitted that the purges are done for his own entertainment. He was incredibly rude and condescending towards Charlie, going so far as to tell her that even she would be fair game for an extermination, had her father not arranged for a pardon from whatever higher authority he answered to. (Whether or not he has yet to be officially stated.) According to Vivziepop, the creator of the series, all the exorcists are former mortals and descendants of Adam. Furthermore, all exorcists with the exception of Adam, are female. The pilot episode shows a female angel with a more human-like face than the others, who has not yet been named.
Both Adam and Lute desire nothing less than genocide, and their true motive is revealed to be revenge for the death of one of his women. The killer is later revealed to be Overlord Carmilla, who killed the angel to protect her daughters during the last purge. This event is worsened by the fact that Velvette (another Overlord) sees it as proof that the exterminators are not as invincible as they appear and proposes more active resistance towards them, an idea the other Overlords quickly strike down.
With the exception of Adam himself, the exorcists angels seems to be exclusively women.
One of the creator's writers (Dave Capdevielle) went into details during a live-cast on what happens when demons die in Hell; he stated that they become trapped forever in a void of nothing , and even their former friends and loved ones forget they exist - thus they literally become erased from even the afterlife. This would make the fate of those that fall victim to the exorcists' annual purges truly nightmarish. The writers have also stated that these devices cannot harm Lucifer himself unless used against him by an angel of equal or greater rank.
Current Events[]
The exorcists were mentioned (unnamed) in the pilot of Hazbin Hotel. (Striker is the first antagonist in the canon sister series "Helluva Boss" to have access to them - it is unknown how he obtained their weapons or how many he possesses.) Adam and Lute first appear in person in episode 1, establishing themselves as antagonists while revealing their motivations and some of Adam's history.
Known Exorcist Weapons[]
- Angelic Spears, Swords, and Axes (owner: Typical Exorcists)
- Angelic Sniper-Rifle (owner: Striker [former] / unknown, possibly I.M.P [current])
- Angelic Gun (owner: Striker)
- Angelic Guitar Axe (owner: Adam)
In addition, the exorcists make a cameo appearance in Helluva Boss, one of them appearing on a newspaper Blitzo was reading. This appearance is likely a reference to the latest purge that occurred in Hell (and the event that sparked Charlie's decision to try and enforce demon redemption).
Notable Members[]
- Adam - First leader (deceased)
- Lute - Former Second-in-command and Current leader
- Vaggie (formerly)
- Numerous other unnamed members

Trivia[]
- The Exorcists are likely based on the Zabaniyah from Islamic scripture because, similar to the Zabaniyah, they torture sinners.
- It is currently unknown if the Exorcists are winners (human souls in Heaven) or heavenborn angels. It is likely that its the former considering that Vaggie was previously confirmed to be Salvadoran by the shows creator Vivienne Medrano and she speaks Spanish in both the pilot and the show itself, indicating that she was human in life.
- As Carmilla points out, their arrogance is what did them in. The Exorcists kept leaving tons of spears made with angelic steel back in Hell. Carmilla built her empire on using that steel; plus, the steel allowed the cannibals and Hazbin Hotel Staff to slaughter a good number of the Exorcists.
- Although it is implied that Adam created and named all the Exorcists, Vivziepop has commented that the Angel of Death, Azrael, may have been involved in this, and that it may also be related to the Extermination.
- In the Helluva Boss episode "Western Energy," Striker has weapons and tools that are quite similar to the Exorcists' weapons (mainly due to them having the words "Holy" and "Blessed" inscribed on them). It is currently unknown how he got these weapons though it’s possible that he got them from Carmilla Carmine.
- It is unknown why almost all of them hate Vaggie although it could be that they view her defection to the Demon side as betrayal and because Adam and Lute may have lied to them when all Vaggie did was protect a Demon child although it is very likely that they wouldn’t have cared even if they knew the truth since their job is to kill Demons and they could care less for them.
- They are mentioned in the Helluva Boss episode "The Full Moon" where Cletus and Keenie convince the D.H.O.R.K.S. that they're demon-hunting Exorcists in order to gain their trust; obviously a lie, as the Cherubs were living on Earth as vagrants.
