Programmed Guardian

A Programmed Guardian with a Liberator handgun

The programmed guardians are one of the two antagonistic factions in the Blake's 7 episode "Time Squad", the other being the Terran Federation.

History[]

Four programmed guardians were placed in suspended animation aboard a space capsule in order to protect the gene banks on board. This protection seemed to involve killing any lifeforms they encountered as potential threats. The guardians were genetically engineered and it was unclear just how intelligent they were: None of them were heard to speak, although they were capable of making noises such as cries for pain. At one point, a guardian picked up a Liberator handgun, examined it for a few seconds, then threw it away and drew his knife instead, either not understanding the weapon or preferring a more primitive method of killing.

The capsule was brought on board the Liberator after being found drifting, with Blake and Jenna discovering one of the guardians had died as a result of a life capsule failure. The crew started up the process to revive the others. Upon reviving, one of them instantly attacked Jenna, who sealed him in the hold. They also attached the capsule to the Liberator's systems in order to drain the ship's power. Gan went down to talk to them but found them beyond reason and was attacked. Jenna went down to look for him and was again attacked by the first guardian who she killed.

Jenna went looking for the second guardian and was attacked by him in the teleport chamber. He came close to killing her but was interrupted by Gan, who aimed a gun at him. Although Gan's limited prevented him from killing, the distraction allowed Jenna to retrieve her gun and kill the guardian herself. She then went down to disconnect the power link: It was only then that Zen reported the existence of the fourth guardian, having analysed the capsule's flight record. The remaining guardian went to attack Jenna but Blake arrived and pushed him into the exposed power coupling, causing him to be electrocuted.
