Egrorian is the secondary antagonist of the Blake's 7 episode "Orbit".
He was portrayed by the late John Savident.
History[]
Egrorian was a scientist who once worked for the Terran Federation. He was considered a genius whose theories were so complex other scientists barely understood them. However, he also showed signs of being a megalomaniac. He proposed to deliver the tachyon funnel, an ultimate weapon capable of destroying planets, but his request for funding was refused. He plotted to take over the Federation but eventually went into hiding, apparently with assistance from Servalan. He set up camp in a biodome on Malador, bringing with him his young protege Pinder. An accident with Hofel's Radiation caused Pinder to rapidly age fifty years, from a youth into a senile old man. Egrorian's attitude towards him became increasingly abusive, with violent punishment for offences.
In the aftermath of Servalan being deposed as president, Egrorian had completed his work on the tachyon funnel and the two of them conspired on a plan to take over the Federation and get revenge on the Scorpio crew. Egrorian was offered the post of chief science minister if the coup succeeded (although he seemed more interested in being her consort).
Egrorian contacted Scorpio and informed them of his weapon, offering them its use against the Federation. Scorpio travelled to Malador, where Servalan was hidden from view. Egrorian insisted Avon come down unarmed in person to meet with him, although he reluctantly consented to Vila accompanying him given the presence of Pinder. (Despite this, he also seemed taken with Vila.) He demonstrated the weapon to the pair, destroying an uninhabited moon, and asked for Orac in return for the tachyon funnel.
Egrorian and Servalan's plan was to gain both the funnel and Orac as well as disposing of Avon. Egrorian had insisted that Avon and Vila travel down in a shuttle he provided rather than using the teleport. On it, he had placed a small but incredibly dense speck of parallel matter, which made the ship too heavy to reach escape velocity. He calculated that the shuttle would crash into the swamp, killing Avon and Vila but leaving the tachyon funnel intact.
Avon realised Egrorian's duplicity and double-crossed him, using a fake Orac for the changeover, controlled by the genuine article from the shuttle. Egrorian was unconcerned when he realised, since Orac would also survive the crash. As they waited, Servalan reminded him her shuttle could only carry two: Egrorian was quite prepared to abandon Pinder. However, they were left watching in horror as Avon first deviated from the flight plan by ejecting some of the shuttle's weight (including the tachyon funnel) and then ejected the parallel matter, making it back to Scorpio. Furious, Servalan abandoned Egrorian on Malador to contemplate what might have been.
He didn't contemplate it for long: Having overheard Egrorian's plan to abandon him, Pinder flooded the biodome with Hofel's Radiation, aging them both to death.
