~ Edie Porter |
The Porter Family are antagonists in Red Dead Redemption 2. They are a reclusive, inbred family of criminals who live in the West Grizzlies.
History[]
The Porters are a deeply inbred family who make their living through kidnapping and highway robbery. They are incredibly reclusive, rarely leaving their homestead in the West Grizzlies other than going down to market for supplies, and have even developed their own dialect which is like English but with poor grammar and a lot of made-up words. They are rumoured to be keeping treasure on the property. The family consists of the patriarch, "Pappy", his sons Mal, Finney and Newt and his daughter Edie.
An optional companion activity has Arthur Morgan and Javier Escuella go to the Porter's homestead to rob them. Arriving at the homestead, they hear Pappy berating Newt for neglecting his duty guarding the barn and placing Edie in charge of guard duty. Javier distracts the family by setting a hay bale on fire before he and Arthur ambush them from behind. All the family are killed during the shootout. Arthur and Javier then recover the money from the barn and make their escape.
It is possible to visit the Porter homestead and encounter the family if the player has not completed Javier's companion activity. Remaining undetected yields more information about the family, as their dialogue reveals that they have developed their own religion and believe that too much contact with outsiders will cause their souls to become "blandished" and that a cataclysmic event called "the awakening" in which the outsiders will be judged is imminent. They have been waiting for this event for 20 years. The player can also overhear a conversation between Mal and Finney in which they discuss flirting with girls at the market. This conversation quickly takes a disturbing turn as they begin reminiscing about how they kidnapped a woman, kept her out in the woods and implicitly sexually abused her before Pappy found out and their dialogue implies he killed her. Attacking and killing the family at any point will not prevent you from playing Javier's mission later.
Trivia[]
- If the family are attacked outside of the mission Pappy may run off if he is the last one alive, telling Arthur that the reckoning will come for him early.
- Near the Porter homestead there is another named Clawson's Rest containing the corpses of two children. A letter in the homestead reveals that they died after locking themselves in while their mother went to find some men who robbed them. Some players have theorized that this is the woman Mal and Finney Porter were keeping in the woods and the Porters were the ones who robbed her.
