~ Ketheric Thorm demands Drenn to try and kill him again, and his most famous quote. |
“ | I have fought great wars before, in the service of other gods, and other powers. But for Myrkul, I would condemn all of Faerun to death. You are all that stands between me and my destiny - and you have brought the Prism here. I will kill you now. And then I will raise you as my servant. | „ |
~ Ketheric moments before his fight with the adventurers. |
General Ketheric Thorm is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Orin the Red) of the 2023 fantasy video game Baldur's Gate III.
He is one of the overarching antagonists of Act I (especially during the Silvanus' Grove and the Underdark storylines), and the main antagonist and final boss of Act II. He's also the secondary antagonist of Shadowheart's storyline the Daughter of Darkness.
He is an half-elf Chosen of Myrkul, the former god of the dead, and one of the leaders of the Cult of the Absolute, who commands an army of undead monsters to march against Baldur's Gate in a conspiracy to make Lord Enver Gortash look like a hero and become Archduke of the city - all part of their plan to take over Faerun using an elder brain dubbed the Absolute. He is also the father of Isobel and the archenemy of her lover Dame Aylin.
He was voiced by J.K. Simmons, who also played Alexander Rausch in Homicide: Life on the Street, Vernon Schillinger in Oz, General Wade Eiling in Justice League Unlimited, Skip in Aliens in the Attic, Cave Johnson in the Portal video game series, Terence Fletcher in Whiplash, Kai the Collector in Kung Fu Panda 3, Captain Matt McKenna in 21 Bridges, Omni-Man in Invincible, Ivo Shandor in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Captain Putty in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Personality[]
Ketheric Thorm is best described as a ruthless and callous man who is broken by grief and is heavily obsessed with bringing back his loved ones, even by force if necessary, and has a strong bitter hatred towards the world. Ketheric is relentless in his goals and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, no matter how many must die and is even willing to burn the entire world just to get his daughter back.
In the past, it was stated by Isabel that Ketheric was once a devoted family man who loved his daughter and wife very much, and was a fair and good man, who was loyal to the Moonmaiden Selûne. However, the loss of his wife turn him bitter and cursed his goddess for abandoning him.
History[]
In his first life, Ketheric Thorm was a worshiper of Selûne, as Thorm's family had been faithful servants of Selûne for generations. He had a family who lived in Reithwin. Ketheric's wife Melodia died while still young, and although he grieved, he continued to care for his daughter and serve Selune. Unfortunately, Ketheric's daughter Isobel also died young, leading Ketheric to grieve her death deeply. To take away his own sorrow, Ketheric turned to Myrkul, the Lord of bones, in order to ressurect his daughter. He eventually became Myrkul's chosen.
He joined Lord Enver Gortash and Orin the Red, in their plot to cultivate the Cult of the Absolute and seize the Sword Coast and the rest of Faerun for their own. Thorm would raise an army of undead creatures at Moonrise Towers and march on Baldur's Gate, while the other chosen of the Dead Three would carry out their own roles.
He is eventually defeated by the adventurer Tav (or Dark Urge, depending on player's choice) and his companions. He called Myrkul for help, and the Lord of Bones transformed Ketheric into the monstrous avatar called the Apostle of Myrkul and fought Tav's party again more powerful than before but he was killed for good.
