Wulbren Bongle is a supporting character in the video game Baldur's Gate 3.

He is the leader of the Ironhand Gnomes who was captured by the Cult of the Absolute due to their knowledge of making runepowder bombs. Whilst not inherently an antagonist, he commits a few villainous acts and has a deep hatred towards the Gondians for seemingly no reason, even going as far as to ask the party to kill all of them.

He was voiced by Nicholas Aaron.

Personality[]

When first met, Wulbren acts like a typical captive and is a cunning decision maker, already coming up with a plan to escape Moonrise Prison. However, after he is rescued, he immediately starts to show his egotistical side, as he is not happy to see his friend Barcus, and takes credit for being the one to rescue the other prisoners, referring to Tav as simply a 'helper'. He also never properly thanks his rescuers, and leaves Barcus to give a reward to them instead.

In Act 3, his xenophobic side really comes to light, as when tracked down to his hideout, he will ask the party to blow up the Steel Watch Foundry. However, Wulbren's main priority is making sure every Gondian in the factory is killed. This is especially heinous considering the fact that he knows they are no more than slaves and are being forced to construct the Steel Watch, lest their families come to harm in the Iron Throne.

Biography[]

Wulbren is first mentioned by Barcus Wroot in the Grymforge after the gnome slaves have been freed from the Duergar, stating that him and rest of the Ironhand Gnomes are being held captive in Moonrise Towers. Upon reaching said prison, he can be found locked in a prison cell, where he tells the party of his plan to escape. He promises that if they can bring him a weapon such as a mace, and they distract the guards, he can break the wall at the back of the cell to escape, and then free the other tiefling prisoners. Once freed, he can be convinced to take a boat back to Last Light Inn, where he is finally reunited with Barcus.

Surprisingly, Wulbren acts cold towards Barcus, telling him that he wasted his time rescuing him and that he should have gone back to Baldur's Gate for future preparations. After giving little in terms of thanks to the party, Barcus is left to reward the players for rescuing him. Wulbren can be encountered again in Act 3, where they narrowly avoided a conflict with the Flaming Fist, and have become fugitives. He gives the party a powerful runepowder explosive and tells them to place it in the Steelwatch Foundry to blow it up. When questioned further, he reveals that the main reason for blowing it up is to eliminate the Gondian slaves, who he blames for Gortash's power over the city.

The Steelwatch can then be raided and destroyed, and the Gondians can be saved in the process. The Ironhand gnomes will then arrive at the foundry, and Wulbren proclaims that they must kill the remaining Gondians immediately. At this point, Wulbren can be confronted about his evil ambition, and Barcus can be convinced to become the new leader of the Ironhand Gnomes, banishing Wulbren and saving all of the Gondians. Wulbren then gets angry and walks away, saying that he will get revenge on the party for betraying him.
