Izanagi is a minor antagonist in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.

He is the overarching antagonist of Susano'o no Mikoto's Flashback during the Tenth Round and a major character in the Tenth Round of the Ragnarok Tournament.

Izanagi is the Shinto God of Creation, as well as a Chief God and the father and creator of the Three Noble Gods, a group composed of the three most important Shinto Deities, namely Amaterasu Okami, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto and Susano'o no Mikoto, giving them the order to rule the world.

Appearance[]

Izanagi is a God with a humanoid appearance with long hair gathered in four rings: two lateral ones that surround the head, and two external ones that go in the opposite direction at the height of the neck. He has three dots under his left eye arranged in a column. He wears a long kimono comprising long sleeves and long trousers. He only wears socks on his feet, and two necklaces.

Personality[]

Izanagi is a very authoritarian God who enforces his wishes, both with his children, the Three Noble Gods, and with all the others. He seems to care a lot about his children, given that even though Susano'o no Mikoto was banished from Takamagahara for wanting to learn swordsmanship from Humans, he continued however to love him and cheer for him during the Tenth Round of the Ragnarok Tournament, always curious about his moves and worrying if he were seriously injured.

When Susano'o is later defeated and killed by Okita, Izanagi is shocked and saddened. Nonetheless, Izanagi chooses not to hate Humanity for killing Susano'o, but rather ends up respecting them and Soji Okita for giving meaning to his son's existence, and to honor him he saves Soji Okita from death and bows before to him and the other members of the Shinsengumi, leaving all the other Gods astonished at the sight of a Chief God bowing before Humans.

Biography[]

Izanagi is the Shinto God of Creation and the creator and father of the Three Noble Gods. Izanagi created the Three Noble Gods as his children and gave them command over the world, giving his eldest daughter, Amaterasu Okami, command over the Heavens, his middle son, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, command over the Ocean, and his younger son, Susano'o no Mikoto, command over the Earth.

Millennia later, during the Ragnarok Tournament, Izanagi sits in the stands, in a place of honor, together with Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi to watch the Tenth Round, during which Susano’o no Mikoto faces Soji Okita. In the end Susano'o is defeated and killed by Okita, which leaves Izanagi, Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi in sadness and despair.

Immediately after the Tenth Round, Okita falls onto the ground, dying from his sustained injuries, much to the sorrow and horror of his friends. However, Izanagi arrives at the arena, and heals Okita from his wounds, saving his life out of respect for his late son's will as well as gaining respect for the Human fighter. The Shinto God of Creation thanks Okita and Humanity for giving his son's life a purpose before leaving the arena, shocking the Gods.

Powers and Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Being the Shinto God of Creation, Izanagi is the most powerful Shinto God of all, superior even to Susano'o no Mikoto, one of the fighters of the Gods Fighters in the Ragnarok Tournament. As a God, Izanagi possesses physical abilities far superior to those of any ordinary Human. His body cannot be damaged by mortal weapons, however it can still be damaged by unarmed attacks from individuals with superhuman strength and Divine Weapons. For the same reason, Izanagi is unable to die due to old age.

Power of Creation, Healing and Flight: As the Shinto God of Creation, Izanagi has the power to create anything he wants, be it objects or other Deities. In fact, it was Izanagi who created the Three Noble Gods. Furthermore, Izanagi is capable of using the Onogoro, a technique with which, by extending his right hand forward, he surrounds the target with healing flames and completely heals him even from mortal wounds. Furthermore, he is also capable of flying.

Trivia[]

  • The fact that Izanagi is a Chief God has not yet been confirmed within Record of Ragnarok, however the other leaders of the Pantheons are all Chief Gods, and consequently it can be assumed that Izanagi is too.
  • In Shinto Mythology, Izanagi is the Creator God, father of all Kami and creator of the lands.
