We are the few against the many.
~ Milo Morbius quoting the original Spartans about the Living Vampires.
All our lives we've lived with death hanging over us! Why? Why shouldn't they know what it feels like for a change, Michael?!
~ Milo's most famous quote when trying to convince Michael Morbius to embrace villainy.
Milo: Michael you can't kill me! It's me, you can't kill me... You gave me my name, remember?
Michael: I remember everything.
Milo: I'm sorry...
~ Milo before having his vampirism reverted by Michael; also his last words before dying from the wounds from own brother.

Milo Morbius, born Lucien Crown, is the main antagonist of the 2022 superhero film Morbius, the third installment in Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

He was a wealthy heir to his family's fortune and the lifelong best friend and surrogate brother of Dr. Michael Morbius, a man who suffers from the same debilitating blood disease as himself. Upon seeing what it did for his friend, Milo inflicted himself with vampirism to cure him of his fatal illness. Unfortunately, however, the process drove him to madness, making him a bloodthirsty, murderous maniac who unlike his friend, embraced the monstrous qualities his "cure" gave him and decided to use them against humanity out of revenge for his horrible and pained life. He is the arch-nemesis of Michael Morbius.

He was portrayed by Matt Smith, who also played Mr. Clever in Doctor Who, Patrick Bateman in the musical American Psycho adaptation, T-5000 in Terminator Genisys, Jack in Last Night in Soho and Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

Appearance[]

Milo was a handsome, slim man in his thirties with pale skin and short, thick, wavy dark brown hair styled into a comb-over and hazel eyes, he also had rather thin eyebrows. He had a rather expensive and fancy fashion sense; his most prominent outfits being that of a pale grey suit with a matching long-coat and a light blue shirt underneath as well as a black tie and shoes, a black suit with a pinstripe off-white shirt with a matching tie as well as a pair of off-white trainers underneath a charcoal trench coat and a grey & white pinstripe suit alongside a white shirt with a black belt, tie and shoes.

When he truly embraced his vampirism, Milo's face became much more monstrous, looking rather flat and cat-like with glowing eyes and sharp fangs. He also developed claws. His physique also greatly improved with him almost immediately developing a very athletic and muscular build.

Personality[]

Milo was a rather withdrawn man and bitter about his illness and his poor quality of life, which caused him not to have much of a social life with few friends or close relationships. However, his friendship with Michael was very intense, as the two were surrogate brothers and quickly bonded upon meeting due to his shared illness. Milo cared very much for his brother, and felt he was the only one who could love him. All of Milo's worst traits were amplified due to his vampirism, turning him into a deranged, misanthropic monster who had an insatiable bloodlust and seething envy for his former friend. However, at the same time, he also had a desire to convince him to embrace his darker nature like him and be happy as brothers. Before he died, Milo's original personality returned once Michael extracted the vampirism from him, and he apologized for all the damage he had caused.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Lucien Crown was a young boy from a wealthy family suffering from a rare blood disease which prevented his body from properly being able to create blood, affecting his body and health in devastating ways. At the age of ten, he was transferred into a private medical centre under the care of Dr. Emil Nicholas where he met Michael Morbius, another boy suffering from the same disease as him. He was saved by Michael after fixing his broken blood pump after being unconscious for a while. The two bonded over their illness and Michael decided to start calling Lucien by "Milo", with the two becoming surrogate brothers and lifelong best friends.

Morbius[]

Twenty-five years later, Milo is now a billionaire. He goes in search of Michael at his lab looking for Martine, unaware of her coma. He is surprised that his brother is cured and seeking blood. But he then gets outraged when Michael refuses to give him the cure, despite of the warning and risks. He then killed and drained a nurse of her blood at the hospital. Milo meets his brother in prison and poses as a lawyer to use his connections to free his brother, but Morbius realizes Milo took the cure. After that Milo kills a man who mocked Morbius' original disability, showing he truly cares

He admits he killed the nurse because of the same bloodlust that caused Morbius to kill the ship's crew. Milo asks him to join him in embracing their truer selves and live as vampires, before killing a group of police officers who attempt to arrest him and leaving. Milo then did another one of his attacks which caught him on security and released to the media. Nicholas recognizes him and tells him to stop. Angered by Nicholas' perceived preference for Michael, Milo wounds and forces him to call Michael. Michael watches Nicholas die while Milo attacks Bancroft.

He is then confronted by Michael and fights him in the sewers before he is attacked by a swarm of bats summoned and injected with the anti-vampire serum on him by his brother. Milo tells him that he is now in his human form and that he can't kill him and asks him if he remembered that he gave him his name. Milo apologizes for everything he did to him, before dying in his arms, making him the supposed last of Michael's loved ones to be gone, unaware that the latter's fiancé Martine is alive and now a vampire.

Trivia[]

  • Although Matt Smith was 11 years younger than Jared Leto, Milo and Michael were considered the same age in the film.
  • Despite that Morbius received negative reviews, Matt Smith’s portrayal as Milo Morbius received some praise.
  • Milo is a loose adaptation of Hunger from the comics and while he does share the same basic qualities as him, for unknown reasons, the character's name was changed from Loxias to Lucien, and he is portrayed in a much more sympathetic light.
    • In addition to this, Matt Smith explained in an interview that he was somewhat confused with his character's history as he wasn't really aware of how Milo tied into Hunger's greater legacy and origins from the comics since it wasn't clarified in the script he was given for the film.
      • Many reports from when the film was first announced also claimed that Smith's character was named Loxias Crown, and only very shortly prior to the release of the movie was it announced that his name was actually Milo (although his birth name is Lucien Crown, which is somewhat similar). This has led some to believe that his name was changed during one of the film's many reshoot periods. However, it is also equally possible that this was always the plan and that the reports simply assumed that the film would retain his original name from the comics.
  • Matt Smith accepted the role of Milo after Karen Gillan, one of his closest friends and former co-star during his time as The Doctor, encouraged him to take on the opportunity, having experience in the realm of superhero films herself as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He also accepted due to being excited by the opportunity to work under the direction of Daniel Espinosa and for his self admitted love for vampire movies.
  • Matt Smith apparently deliberately channeled Kiefer Sutherland's performance as David from The Lost Boys in some scenes of the film. He joked that this was due to both movies having their main characters named Michael.
  • The scene of Milo's mirror dance has become a popular internet meme, especially on Twitch, due to the song's absurdity and misheard lyrics.
