The Ear is a minor antagonist in the anime and manga series Vinland Saga. He is one of Askeladd's scouts, he has an extraordinary ability to hear at long distances and is used to allow his fellow warriors to prepare for an attack if they are unaware of enemy presence.
Biography[]
Past[]
Nothing is know about Ear's past, he has been with Askeladd for an unknown amount of time. He only seen during the War Arc when Thorfinn is a teenager. But it's evident that he has been fighting alongside Askeladd for a long time. Ear is a very important person in the group, whenever Ear works he needs complete silence. All the men stop what they're doing in order Ear to operate. Deeming him a valuable asset.
War Arc[]
Ear first came into prominence when Canute was taken under escort by Askeladd during 1013 at the River Severn. While halted when Askeladd was talking to a local ferryman, Ear presses his head to the ground to listen to how for away Thorkell's men are from them. While Ear was at work, Ragnar questioned the delay while Bjorn informed him why, when Bjorn finished talking to Ragnar, Ear notified everyone that Thorkell's men were just a day's march away. He estimated that there was around 500 men with horses, Ear's previous estimation was wrong since he had before determined that they were 2 days behind them. Bjorn questions Ear, Ear defends himself. While this is happening Ear notices two mounted scouts on a hill in the distance. The scouts disappear and the group moves along fast since Thorkell is close. A day later Ear alerts everyone that Thorkell's men are extremely close. At a Roman ruin along Severn, Askeladd meets with Gratianus, who agrees to ferry him and his men across the river.
As the band marches along the mountains, Ear alerts Bjorn that he detected a large number of men ahead. Bjorn alerts Askeladd, the men that are ahead of them are a group led by Asser. While Gratianus and Asser are talking, Asser's men hold up their bows as if they were ambushing them. Ear could not detect this because the men were not moving, rather sitting in place waiting for Askeladd to come about.
Sometime later Askeladd's group captures a village in December, they set up camp in the village and have Ear be the scout. He perches up on a tree on the outskirts of the village so men don't have to be set up. When Askeladd and Bjorn check on him, he points out that the snow was muffling his hearing, showing that Ear has a weakness. Limiting how far he could hear, the snow would mean that Askeladd was vunerable to an attack. Later on, Ear alerts Askeladd of a group of farmers marching toward the village. He could not guess the numbers of the amount of farmers, but he did detect Thorkell's men closing in on them. With no choice Askeladd and his men retreat at midnight.
During January 1014, Ear was waiting with Askeladd at a bridge while the others crossed. He estimated that there was enough time to dismantle the bridge. Just after the bridge, he detected that Thorkell had arrived based on the glints of the spears carried by the latter's men became visible on the opposite hill. After the whole ordeal with Thorkell and Askeladd, it's unknown if Ear turned against Askeladd or was killed after Thorkell's arrival. However, he is last seen with his head decapitated, the latter being used as target practice with Thorkell's men.
Appearance[]
Ear has a pinched face with narrow eyes, because of his age he has a wrinkled chin and a thin mustache on his head. He wore a medium-colored bandana on his head with a long-sleeved coat and tunic. Later in the winter, he wore a cloak.
Personality[]
The Ear is very soft-spoken and doesn't speak much, whenever he does speak he is always on task and gets straight to the point. He doesn't start small talk with other people, usually when he speaks he is either giving information or obeying orders.
