~ Canute |
King Canute is the secondary antagonist of the 2005 epic historical manga series Vinland Saga and its 2019 anime television series adaptation of the same name.
Canute was the second son of Sweyn, Viking king of Denmark. Initially meek, naïve, and reliant on his retainer Ragnar, he became a ruthless and power-hungry ruler after being forced to face the ugliness of the world. After the deaths of his father and elder brother Harald, both of which he had a hand in, he became king of England and Denmark.
He is voiced by Kensho Ono in Japanese, by Jessie James Grelle (who has also voiced Tyrian Callows in RWBY) in the Crunchyroll English dub, and by Griffin Burns (who has also voiced Tartaglia in Genshin Impact) in the Netflix English dub.
Personality[]
Canute is introduced as a timid and frail prince, a far cry from his father, who initially refuses to speak with anyone besides his overprotective retainer Ragnar until Thorfinn provokes him by calling him weak, prompting him to speak up more. He is frequently mocked by others for his effeminate appearance and behavior, resulting in Askeladd killing Ragnar to bring out Canute's shrewd and commanding side.
During his reign as a king, Canute becomes a power hungry and manipulative person who is not afraid to use violence to fulfill his dream of creating a peaceful haven for the Vikings. His ruthlessness results in him poisoning his brother Harald to take control of Denmark, even though his brother loved him and would have aided him if he just asked for help. Later on he provokes Ketil into a fight for the purpose of annexing his territory for profit and power, even at the cost of innocents. He is also troubled by his past, manifesting in visions of his father tormenting him while also offering political and moral advice from his late father. Eventually, Canute stays true to his peaceful mission and backs down after Thorfinn negotiates with him to protect the farm, even going so far as to disband his troops in England.

Trivia[]
- Canute was loosely based off of Cnut the Great, a historical figure who, during the early eleventh century, formed and reigned over the North Sea Empire consisting of the nations of England, Denmark, and Norway.
