The 54 Immortals, often referred to as the 54i, are major antagonists in Call of Duty: Black Ops III, V.E.R.S.I.O.N. and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Founded in the late 19th century, the 54 Immortals is a crime syndicate that spreads fear and destruction across Singapore.
Biography[]
Creation[]
The 54 Immortals was originally a secret society founded in 1894 by Goh Qiang, a first generation Singaporean of Chinese descent. Back in the 19th century, the 54i was mostly made up of Chinese, Indian and Malay immigrants. Throughout the years, the organization would rapidly expand through criminal activities such as illegal drug dealing and human trafficking.
Usurpation[]
Goh Qiang would lead the organization until his death, and his descendants headed the 54i until 2046. The 54i's leader, Goh Cheung, was murdered by his bodyguard, Hyuan Jian, who declared himself as the new leader. Cheung's children, Goh Min and Goh Xiulan, were taken into the care of high-ranking enforcer Jae Xiong. Two years later, Xiong killed Jian, and handed the Goh siblings leadership of the 54 Immortals. Xiong acted their adviser through their teenage years, being a close ally since he raised them when Jian usurped Cheung.
Singapore Disaster[]
In 2060, the Singapore Coalescence facility exploded after complications involving the CIA black project, SP/CORVUS. The facility began to leak large quantities of a gas (later revealed to be Nova 6), and proceeded to spread across the city. The gas killed over 300,000 people over the course of the year, and international relief efforts failed and the authorities quarantined the region. Singapore became a quarantine zone and a lawless wasteland, and the 54 Immortals used this as an advantage.
After bribing the Singapore Armed Forces, the 54i were allowed to illegally enter the quarantine zone and amass significant wealth through looting and trading whatever they could salvage. In addition, the 54I also hunted survivors of the disaster to sell them into human trafficking, or brutally kill them to send a message. By 2062, the 54 Immortals controlled the quarantine zone, receiving members and salvaging military equipment (e.g. GI Units). In addition, the syndicate received military training from the Common Defense Pact, and utilized the zone as a one to do arms smuggling.
Black Ops III[]
The crime syndicate continued to grow in strength until 2064, when they were contracted by the CDP to explore the abandoned Coalescence facility in search of Nova 6. A team of 54i members explored the facility, and accidentally triggered an alarm which alerted the CIA of their presence. The CIA decided to send a clean up crew to eliminate the 54i crew, as they feared they would find evidence of the SP/CORVUS. The CIA sent WA operators Dylan Stone, Alice Conrad, Javier Ramirez, and Joseph Fierro to clear the area. Though they eliminated the crew, Stone's team went against orders and went deeper into the facility. The team discovered the CIA's illegal experiments to the Singapore disaster, and defected from the Winslow Accord to reveal these crimes to the public.
Stone and his team then eliminated the CIA black station that was tasked with spying on the 54i, and proceeded to steal the station's data drives and took them to the syndicate's stronghold at the bio-domes. Stone and his team made an agreement with the Goh siblings, they would leak the data drives to the 54i in exchange for safe passage out of the quarantine zone. Ramirez decided to stay behind, returning to the Coalescence facility to retrieve more evidence. Stone and team's former allies, Jacob Hendricks and John Taylor, were sent by the CIA to retrieve the stolen data drives. The two guised themselves as arms dealers to get in and meet with Hendricks' old friend, 54i trader Danny Li. The Goh siblings discovered the deceit, and confronted them, only for Hendricks and Taylor to successfully kill Min. Goh Xiulan managed to escape with the data drives, and she attempted to upload the intel from the drives to her personal computer.
Hendricks and Taylor battled through the bio-domes and managed to retrieve the data, but had to cut off one of Xiulan's hands in order to bypass her computer's fingerprint recognition system. Despite Xiulan awakening and telling her soldiers to kill the two, Hendricks and Taylor managed to escape, having inflicted high casualties with the 54i destroying the bio-towers. Xiulan swore vengeance against the Winslow Accord since they killed her brother, and caused her a setback with her control on the quarantine zone. She tracked Hendricks and Taylor to the abandoned Coalescence facility, where they failed to stop Ramirez from publicly leaking the locations of the CIA's safehouses. 54i soldiers were sent down to kill Hendricks and Taylor, but Xiulan ordered her men to flood the facility in an attempt to drown the WA operatives. Despite her attempt to kill Hendricks and Taylor, they managed to escape alive.
Vengeance and Dissolution[]
Upon learning of the CIA's activities, Xiulan rallied her forces and led them to massacre countless people to destroy the CIA's safehouse. Swearing vengeance, Xiulan led her men against the Singapore Armed Forces, and captured Taylor's handler, Rachel Kane. Hendricks and Taylor disobeyed orders to rescue Kane, and managed to kill countless 54i soldiers and robots to reach the safehouse. Taylor entered the safehouse and killed Goh Xiulan, and rescued Kane before finally leaving Singapore.
Upon the deaths of the Goh siblings, the 54 Immortals fell back to the quarantine zone, and suffered substantial losses at the hands of the CIA. Without any leaders, the 54i fought among themselves, and officially dissolved in 2064-2065.
