Richard "Richie" Aprile is one of the main antagonists of the HBO Television Series The Sopranos, serving as the main antagonist of the second season.
He was a sadistic mob enforcer who served as a Capo in the DiMeo Crime Family and the brother of the former acting boss, Jackie Aprile. After being imprisoned for 10 years, he comes back to New Jersey to resume his career in the Mafia, in which he comes into conflict with the new boss, Tony Soprano.
He was portrayed by David Proval.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He assaulted Rocco DiMeo before stealing his jacket, shattering his reputation as being the toughest guy in Essex County. Worse, he never came back due to the trauma that Richie inflicted upon him.
- After being released from prison, he spitefully beats up Beansie because he didn't give him the money he wanted.
- He ruins Beansie's life and destroys his confidence by paralyzing him with his car after he fails to give him money.
- Even in his romantic relationship with Janice Soprano, he was abusive to her and even had sex with her while holding a gun to her head.
- He started a petty rivalry with Tony Soprano purely out of the mindset that he was entitled to a higher position, despite being a very disrespectful man.
- Involves his nephew Jackie Jr his criminal activities despite Jackie Sr's wishes for his son not to be involved. Although Richie was prison for many years and didn’t know what his brother’s wishes were.
- After Tony gave Rocco DiMeo’s jacket to his Polish maid’s husband, Richie intended to have Tony killed, feeling disrespected.
- He is a homophobe, as during an argument with Janice, he outright says he hates the fact his son might be gay and even hits Janice for defending the possibility.
- While his death at the hands of Janice was rather brutal and cruel in nature, it wasn’t portrayed as sympathetic since nobody but Janice and Jackie Jr expresses sadness over his death.
- While he does seem to have a positive relationship with niece Adriana La Cerva, as he warns Christopher about his abuse of her and comforting her after Chris gets shot, it’s not developed enough. This extends to his relationship with Jackie Jr to some extent too.
- Although he does have a few comedic scenes, such as the famous “It’s the Jacket!” line, he’s usually presented as dead serious.
- He stands out from many villains in The Sopranos, in that he has zero redeeming qualities.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Although he is detestable, he fails the baseline with only one attempted murder. Thus, he fails the heinous standards to Tony Soprano, Christopher Moltisanti, Paulie Gualtieri, Phil Leotardo, and Ralph Cifaretto (who murdered a pregnant woman with no remorse). Even his brutal paralyzing of Beansie isn’t particularly unique, as Feech La Manna and Mustang Sally (whose victim suffered even more) have also brutally crippled others. Resources don’t help Richie since he’s a made man and is the Captain of the Aprile Crew.
