Trolls Trollpedia

This policy page lists all the rules for images, videos and other media uploaded on this wiki. Following this policy reduces the possibility of us getting into trouble over images; it means that there is less work for the admins and it organizes images to make it easier to find what you are looking for.

In addition, the following also documents our wiki's policies on locally-hosted files.

Fair Use

Most files on the Trolls Trollpedia are classified as use under "Fair Use". For more information on this, see this webpage here. When uploading a file, editors must understand there are limitations to how it can be used "fairly". Editors are therefore not free to add files with no absolute logic or reasoning behind them, and every file should have some purpose it serves in being added to the wiki. In short, all files on a wiki are used as demonstrations to back up related text, and are not added to make a page look aesthetically pleasing; in other words, they are not decorations.

For example, a wiki page can describe Queen Poppy as a 6-inch, humanoid creature called a "Troll" with long hair, a pink nose, etc. However, if placed next to another character that would fit the criteria of the description, a viewer without prior knowledge on who is Poppy would not know her from the other character based on description alone. So an image of Poppy on her page would clarify who she is clearly and therefore a "Fair" upload of an image. Thus, it helps the viewer identify her in a way the description of her character alone cannot.

Files of the franchise a wiki is based on must also respect the original owner of the property, its characters and files. In the case of the Trolls Trollpedia, DreamWorks Animation currently owns the copyright on all of the characters, their world and their respective storyline material. DreamWorks is also currently a subsidiary of Universal Pictures so they are considered also to own all aspects of the DreamWorks Trolls franchise as its parental company. Thus all images must be used in a way that DreamWorks and Universal have permitted.

As well as complying with the "Fair Use" policy, they must abide to the Fandom Fandom's Terms of Use policy.

Important: Files that fail either or both the copyright "Fair Use" policy and the "Fandom's Terms of Use" policy can be deleted without warning by the DreamWorks Trolls Wiki editing staff, the Fandom wiki staff, and by request of either DreamWorks Animation or Universal Pictures.

Other Useful Guides

Approved Sources

The following is a list of sources users may borrow elements from. This does not permit the stripping of the entire website, but rather selective elements for "Fair Use".

Approved Websites

The following is a list of websites that users may use content from:

  • DreamWorks
    • DreamWorks Trolls
  • Universal Pictures

Approved YouTube Channels

The following is a list of YouTube channels that users may link to videos, and are approved by the current DreamWorks Trolls Wiki editing staff:

Other videos must be run past a member of the DreamWorks Trolls Wiki's editing team.

Limited Images

Galleries by those working for DreamWorks or DreamWorks Trolls may exist. Please be careful when adding images from the artists and animators' galleries to the wiki. It is not considered fair use to add every last image from an artist/animator's gallery to the wiki, and users should be selective on what they add. For example, if an artist/animator has 6 images in their gallery, at best you may find you can take 2.

Always link to the image source when doing so.

As well as fair use, editors should also be respectful of the artist/animator and mindful that a gallery is their personnel portfolio. These images are not just for fans to see, but to show the artist/animator's work for the sake of employment prospects.

Approved Image Capture Methods

If an image is gathered independently (such as a screenshot of a movie or TV series), these are the approved methods to capture it:

  • PC screenshot
  • Tablet screenshot
  • Mobile phone screenshot
  • TV screen capture device (do not use a camcorder or camera and take pictures of the TV screen)

Shorthand Names

The following is a list of approved shortened names that images and categories may use. This is to avoid file names or categories from being too long.

More abbreviations can be added in the future with the release of new media; this naming scheme applies only to things related to this page.

For example, "Queen Poppy - TBGO" references anything related to Queen Poppy and the TV series Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, and "Branch - TWT" references anything related to Branch and the movie Trolls World Tour.

Important Pages

For purposes of the wiki, the following pages are used for image maintenance. Those with Sysop privileges can find all these special pages and more in their dashboard here. If an editor can't see a Special Page, do not fret as some may be linked to certain positions on the wiki (Admin, Bureaucrat, etc). If you think you should be able to see a page and cannot, contact the bureaucrats User:Angel Emfrbl, User:Inky100 and User:Primera Reload immediately.

For a full list of special pages, see here.

Logos related to the series are kept on this page for reference.

Recent Uploads

There are several ways to view recently uploaded images:

  • New Files - shows all recent uploads in a gallery format.
  • List Files - gives a more detailed list of images, such as file size.

Wanted Files

Wanted Files - This page lists links to images that are needed but do not exist. This page should be empty at all times. Links to images that are dead should be removed in all cases. If the dead link exists on a user page then it is possible to remove the image using <nowiki> and </nowiki> tags. This cancels out the link but leaves the url in place. Note that only members of the Fandom or DreamWorks Trolls wiki staff can do edits to User pages.

For example:

<gallery>
<nowiki>Trolls Satin and Chenille.png</nowiki>
Harper Sometimes.png
</gallery>

Results in the following effect:

Unused Files

Unused Files - Ideally, this should be empty, as all images added to the wiki should be in use and placed on at least one page. This is not always possible, but should be at least attempted to the best the current editing team can achieve.

Additionally, Unused Videos should also be empty at all times.

Uncategorized Files

Uncategorized Files - Lists all files that need categories. The importance of categorizing files is simply to make them easier to find. Categories may use shorthand names to avoid long names for ease.

The following is a list of categories files may fall into:

  • Images - must always be included as a category.
  • Trolls, Trolls Holiday, Trolls World Tour, etc. - all images need a reference source to signal where they came from.
    • Books and merchandise just need "Images of Books" or "Images of Merchandise".
  • Character - written as "Images of Branch", "Images of DJ Suki", etc.
    • If an image gallery is getting too large, categories can be expanded, so source-specific categories such as "Images of Branch - TBGO" may become an option.
  • Season - For TV series and other serial images, please also leave a note of season, such as "TBGO Season 1 images", "TT Season 1 images", etc.

Duplicate Files

Duplicate Files - Used to find duplicated images, though no images should be identical to an existing one.

Pages Without Images

Pages without images - It is not essential that every page should have an image attached to it. Some pages may simply have no possible images to add and comply them.

Editors must exercise judgement on if a page needs one.

Most Linked-to

Most linked-to photos is a list of our most popular images and which pages link to each.

General Guidelines

The following is a list of things to consider when uploading.

Duplicate/Similar Images

The following is an example of a gallery with too many similar images:

At best, a maximum of 2 or 3 images should exist of a similar nature in a page gallery. With the above gallery example, an editor would likely have to remove all but 3 of these images. In a scene from a movie or TV show, it can be tempting to try and grab every expression the character makes, but that is not often required.

The only exception to this rule is crops necessary for certain pages. Compare these two images for example:

Names

Pictures should be named sensibly, preferably with a title that describes it as best possible. Currently, the wiki has no universal system set up to cover an advisable naming scheme. Furthermore, users may add images from their mobile photos. For the moment, the wiki is not so much fixated on making sure the names of every file is suitable.

Names will use shorthand names such as "T1", "TBGO", etc.

Title Cards

In the case of a TV series episodes, images containing the episode's title, otherwise known as title cards, should be free of any network logo or black borders unless another image is unavailable. If no higher quality title card is available, temporary lower quality ones may be used for a while until a better-quality image is found.

Adding own self-made Images?

Fanart

Fanart-based images should not be added to the wiki at any time. There are a number of image uploading sites that can be used to have your image up on the internet for all to see, but Fandom images is not considered one of them.

This is because of several reasons:

  1. Fanart is not official art, and therefore has a different status in terms of copyright; images released by DreamWorks are in the public domain. It's harder to track who owns these pieces, and even if the original artist were to add it, should they change their mind later and disallow use, it is harder to locate and remove every example of their work.
  2. It could be mistaken for official art, or officially approved art by lesser informed readers. This is important as images are a support source or "proof" of something and are demonstration, not decoration. Fanart is a false source of information and violates our Canon Policy.
  3. Official images are considered "neutral", while fanart can be used to push an agenda, such as a political one, which would leave the wiki no longer able to hold a neutral status and therefore it would be bias. The wiki is non-political, and should never be used for opinions and politcal points of view of any editor.
  4. If we receive too much artwork from fans, then it can flood or drown out the "Gallery of new files" page, making it harder for legit images to be monitored. This is important for quality control of images coming into the wiki, as well as monitoring of our own media guidelines. Fanart would have to obey our media guidelines, but due to the nature of fanart it is impossible to control; something that is made purposely against our guidelines would have equal grounds as something that does obey our guidelines. This is owed to the arguments about what is and isn't art itself.

If you wish to talk about fanart, then see our "Discussions" or Discord server. You can also create your own blogs where you can add links to your works or others'.

Bug reports

If there is a wiki problem, they can add screenshots to the wiki to help get the problem resolved. For example, you can take a screen capture highlighting a page's editing issues and what it looks like on your viewing device.

If the issue is a serious bug, then they may be passed over to the Fandom Community Central. Images intended to act as a source (i.e. photos for reference) are an exception, but it must be clear what the intention of the image is, and it should only be uploaded as a demonstration and no other reason. Personal photos are forbidden.

Quality

While high-quality images are not an absolute requirement, it is advisable that images have to be of a decent quality for the wiki's use. If you see an image and you have a higher-quality one, feel free to add your own version. However, don't forget to remove the lower-quality one in the process.

Borders, Logos and Desktop Items

Essentially, the wiki prefers a "clean" screenshot. Try to not upload screenshots of your whole screen when adding a image to an article. If possible, try your best to crop the image.

Logos are an issue, as the wiki is covered for logos related to the DreamWorks Trolls franchise, but it's hard to argue "fair use" for unrelated logos. An owner of a logo that appears on an image could push forward the case for unfair use of their logo, and have it forcefully removed by Fandom staff.

For borders, the issue links to bandwidth and loading times. Cropping borders from an image allows for a smaller file size and less strain on viewers with limited internet access. IT could also make it hard for other editors when choosing which files to put up for deletion, should another similar issue be uploading. The borders make a file size bigger as mentioned previously and one of the key methods of telling a file is of high quality by less knowledgeable editors is by how much data it requires to exist. The border also adds to the file diameters and makes it bigger.

For desktop information, it's simple: other editors don't need to know the status of your Wi-Fi, the local time of your device, what programs you have tabbed out, if your have notifications pending, etc. This can even bring to question on if certain information captured onscreen violates privacy laws.

In this case, there can be exceptions such as:

  • Sometimes, animation cells may have a border.
  • Sometimes, official trailers and movie/episode clips may contain the company logo.
  • Some devices leave a fine border. This is still unacceptable, but tolerable as it can be not with editing out. Images like this should be replaced with ones without if they're available.

Edited Transparency Pictures

When it comes to transparent images, editors can add any official sourced images.

However, please do not add edited images that were edited to look transparent. This images look fine against a background, but are actually quite poor in quality. They do not have the clean-cut appearance of the official transparent images, and may also contain editing errors or random background pixels left over from the original image the edit was taken from.

Compare the following;

Forbidden Images

The DreamWorks Trolls Wiki staff understand that images are difficult to regulate. We only ask you stick to the advisable guidelines, and do not expect perfection. We would prefer all editors make their best efforts to stick to guidelines on uploads, but images can be a difficult subject to understand which is and isn't allowed.

If an editor needs help, seek us out.

Currently, unless an user spams, flames or breaks general wiki rules, the only category of images not allowed at all is pornographic ones. This goes against Fandom's uploading policies. Uploading of such images is worth of a instant ban.

Image Deletions

Images will be removed under the following circumstances:

  • They violate Fandom's Terms of Use or the DreamWorks Trolls Wiki's rules.
  • They're used without permission of the original creator, be it on the wiki or off (note: The DreamWorks Trolls wiki must be informed of the removal request. Editors sadly are not clairvoyant and only know what they've been informed on).
  • They are a duplicate or near-duplicate of an existing file.
  • The image is of a too poor quality for the wiki's use.
  • The image cannot be used on any page.
  • The image is irrelevant to the wiki.

Related Templates

  • {{Delete}} - Used to put an unwanted image up for deletion.
  • {{GalleryMissing}} - The indicated gallery page is missing a gallery.
  • {{GalleryIncomplete}} - More images may be needed for the indicated gallery page.
  • {{GalleryCompleted}} - Used to indicate a gallery page is suitable or "complete", meaning there are enough images to cover the subject fully. Further images can be added if editors wish to expand the gallery or replace existing images with better versions, but it's not urgent.
  • {{Spoilerrestrictions}} - This template limits what images may be allowed on the wiki. It's linked to the Spoiler Policy. If a page has a spoiler template, then only images from official trailers by DreamWorks and Universal Pictures will be allowed on the wiki. This is to avoid unofficial images appearing on the wiki that may not comply with "Fair Use" or be from a dubious source.
