896 before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) was part of a time period known as the Great Peace of the Republic. In this era, parts of the Deep Core of the galaxy were opened to the Galactic Republic, and previously unexplored regions of the Outer Rim Territories were settled. 896 is the birth year of Yoda, future Grand Master of the Jedi Order.

Proem[]

The conflict known as the New Sith Wars—which saw a thousand years of fighting between two major Force-user factions, the Jedi and Sith—finally ended in 1000 BBY. The Galactic Republic was in ruins and was reorganized by the Ruusan Reformation, announced by Supreme Chancellor Tarsus Valorum.[7] The winning faction of the previous long war, the Jedi Order, was codified as a branch of the Republic's Judicial Department.[8]

The galaxy in 896 BBY[]

The era of the Great Peace of the Republic began with the Ruusan Reformation more than one hundred years before the year 896 BBY.[9] During these years, the Republic opened the Deep Core of the galaxy, and unexplored then Wild Space parts of space were charted by scouts and chartographers. The latter areas later became part of the Outer Rim Territories.[7]

Yoda, a Force-sensitive member of a green-skinned species, was born in the first quarter of the year.[10]

Impact[]

After 896 BBY, the expansion of the Galactic Republic continued during the Great Peace of the Republic, which lasted nearly nine hundred more years. In the following years, economic forces acquired more and more power in the Republic, as companies established the Corporate Sector from star systems brought in the Tingel Arm.[8]

At one hundred years of age, Yoda became a Jedi Master. In the following centuries, he trained countless Jedi apprentices until they reached knighthood. His many years of contribution to the Order gained him a seat on the Jedi Council. Eventually, he ascended to become Grand Master of the Jedi Order.[11] For centuries, he served as the leader of all Jedi, thus turning him into the "face" of the Council and the embodiment of the Order.[12]

Behind the scenes[]

"When nine hundred years old you reach, look as good you will not."
―Yoda, to Luke Skywalker[17]

In Return of the Jedi, Yoda implied to his apprentice, Luke Skywalker, that he was nine hundred years old.[17] The movie was set four years after the Battle of Yavin, featured in the first Star Wars film, A New Hope. In 1998, LucasArts released Star Wars: Behind the Magic, an interactive database on CD-ROM, which was the first to state that Yoda was born in 896 BBY.[1]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 Star Wars: Behind the Magic
  2. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, Vol. I, p. 363 ("Great Peace of the Republic") establishes that the Great Peace of the Republic lasted between the Ruusan campaign and the beginning of the Clone Wars, which The New Essential Chronology dates to 1000 BBY and 22 BBY, respectively.
  3. SWTOR mini Galactic History on The Old Republic's official website (article) (backup link) dates the Tho Yor Arrival, as described in Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi 0, to the year BTC 32,800 of the calendar based on the date of the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant. Since the difference between that calendar and the Galactic Standard Calendar—based on the date of the Battle of Yavin—was 3,653 years per the reasoning here, the Tho Yor Arrival must have taken place in the year 36,453 BBY of the latter dating system. Therefore, the difference between the Galactic Standard Calendar and the dating system based on the Tho Yor Arrival that is featured in Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void must be 36,453 years.
  4. Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia places the Treaty of Coruscant, which served as the zero point of a calendar adopted by the Galactic Senate following the conclusion of the Great Galactic War per SWTOR mini Galactic History on The Old Republic's official website (article) (backup link), in the year 3653 BBY of the Galactic Standard Calendar, which was based around the date of the Battle of Yavin. Thus, the difference between the two dating systems is 3,653 years.
  5. The New Essential Chronology establishes that the zero point of the calendar introduced by Tarsus Valorum was the Ruusan Reformation. The book places that event in the year of 1000 BBY of the Galactic Standard Calendar—which was based around the date of the Battle of Yavin—therefore establishing a difference of one thousand years between the two dating systems.
  6. Per the reasoning here, the Battle of Yavin, the zero point in the Galactic Standard Calendar per The New Essential Chronology, can be placed in 35:3:8 under the Great ReSynchronization dating system, thereby confirming the placement of the division between each Galactic Standard Calendar year as the third month in the Great ReSynchronization year. Thus, there is a two-month, seven day gap between the two dating systems, with the first two months of a GrS year being the last two of the preceding Galactic Standard Calendar year, and there is a total difference of 35 years and 2 months between the two systems.

  10. Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide states that Yoda was born in 896 BBY, which year spans approximately 861:3–860:3 BrS in the year-notation system of the Great ReSynchronization. The Essential Guide to Characters states that by the time he met Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda was already 900 years old. The Essential Atlas marks the beginning of the film at 38:6:6, which puts Yoda's birthdate approximately to 862:6–861:6 BrS. Sectioning these two timespans narrows Yoda's possible birth date to 861:3–861:6 BrS, which is the approximately the first quarter of 896 BBY.
