Lyric's dastardly mining creation swallows up dirt and anything else that gets in it's way.

— Description, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal

The Driller Worm (クリスタル・シーカー[2] Kurisutaru shīkā?, lit. "Crystal Seeker") is a character that appears in the Sonic Boom series. It is a colossal mining robot model created by Lyric the Last Ancient as a weapon to find his people's all-powerful crystals.[2]

Appearance[]

The Driller Worms are gigantic mechanical worm-like beings that appear to be covered in dirt. They have extremely long and cylindrical tube-like bodies with thick hides consisting of countless arching plates and dark underbellies. Their head segment up front consists only of a maw filled with pointy teeth for processing dirt, four mandibles arranged like a claw hand, and two green eyes without pupils.

History[]

Games[]

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]

SBRoL 9-10

A Driller Worm confronting Team Sonic.

Created to find the Chaos Crystals,[2] the Driller Worms were deployed by Lyric to The Pit to find the red Chaos Crystal. While there, Sonic and Knuckles spotted one for a moment. Shortly thereafter, Driller Worms would chase Team Sonic through the Pit. When Team Sonic later found the red Chaos Crystal and was about to take it, a Driller Worm suddenly emerged from the ground and swallowed it. However, the Driller Worm was defeated by the heroes, who took the Chaos Crystal back afterwards. The Driller Worm's remains were later found by Lyric and Dr. Eggman, which confirmed that Team Sonic did not die in River Rush.

Even after this, Team Sonic would encounter more Driller in Lyric's Lair as they pass through it. There, several Driller Worms would appear when the team traveled down high-speed sections and destroy parts of the roads the team was using, leaving them at risk of falling into the lair's chasms. However, Team Sonic managed to either evade the Driller Worm's attacks or circumvent the broken roads with Ener-Rails each time.

Worm Tunnel World Map incomplete

The Driller Worm in Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.

In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, Driller Worms appear in the Worm Tunnel bonus levels, which can be found on each World Map in the game. They appear before entering each of these levels on the World Map, and after completing them, only their broken remains can be found on the World Map. When playing through the Worm Tunnels themselves, Driller Worms will appear in the background of the sections with the Ener-Rails, where they emerge from the tunnel walls. However, they cannot interfere with the player like the obstacles in the Worm Tunnels, as they are merely background ornaments. Also, at the end of each Worm Tunnel, Sonic jumps into the mouth of a Driller Worm and destroys it from the inside.

Powers and abilities[]

The Driller Worms are brutal combat weapons that specializes in search and destruction.[2] They are equipped with special systems that let them sense the faint energy particles given off by the Ancients' crystals,[2] enabling them to track them down no matter where they may be.

Driller Worm battle 2

The Driller Worm's suction breath.

The Driller Worms are efficient burrowers for the purpose of progressing to their destination.[2] Capable of creating tunnels in a matter of seconds, their drill-like bodies allow them to move freely underground, and their build-in crushers let them swallow up dirt and anything else that gets in their way.[1][2] To better process rubble, they possess a suction device inside their mouths which lets them such objects into their maw.[2]

Due to their size, the Driller Worms possess immense strength, enough to unleash powerful and wide tremors by slamming into the ground.

Battle[]

The Driller Worm is the boss of the Pit and the third overall boss of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. It is encountered after clearing the Pit, and is fought with all of Team Sonic.

Boss guide[]

The boss battle takes place on an enclosed platform with bottomless pits surrounding it. The fight against the Driller Worm itself is split into three phases. In the first phase, the Driller Worm's primary attack is slamming its head onto the platform where Team Sonic is standing. To avoid it, make sure where the Driller Worm will impact the arena nd then move away from there. After some time however, the Driller Worm will open its mouth, which is its weak spot, and begin sucking objects in. At this point, the player can attack it by Lassoing Destruction Troops that spawn during the fight directly into its mouth with the Enerbeam. As it takes damage, the color of the Driller Worm's mouth will turn from its usual green to red. After enough hits, it will become stunned, allowing the player to use all of Team Sonic's Enerbeams to pull the Driller Worm down to the platform. Once it is down, attack either of its eyes until it jumps back and resumes its attacks.

In the second phase, the Driller Worm gains a new attack; it will swallow chunks of rocks from a nearby quarry and then spit them out across the platform. When revealing its mouth, the Driller Worm may position itself out of throwing range for Destruction Troops; instead, the player must Lasso and throw Destruction Troops at the round springboard targets in front of the platform so they will ricochet off of them and hit the Driller Worm's mouth. Repeat the above methods until this phase is completed.

In the third phase, the Driller Worm will begin performing a powerful attack where it slams its mouth into the center of the arena, an impact of which may sometimes create a shockwave around it that the player has to jump over, or take damage. It may also reveal its mouth at heights where the player must Lasso Destruction Troops at the second set of springboard targets. With regards to this, repeat the above methods until the Driller Worm is defeated.
