Vegeta is the deuteragonist of the Dragon Ball franchise.

He is voiced by Ryo Horikawa in the Japanese version of the anime and by Brian Drummond in the Ocean Dub and Christopher R. Sabat in the Funimation dub.

What Makes Him a Shonen Rival?[]

• Anti-Heroic/Anti-Villainous: Vegeta has saved the universe from multiple threats but is overall portrayed as an anti-hero, and as a villain he eventually mellows out and becomes more affable and on & off, often assisting the Z-Fighters with worse threats such as Frieza and Cell, before redeeming himself completely.
• Honorable: He has shown notable standards even as a villain, being disgusted with Frieza's behavior.
• Tragic Past: While he was oddly casual when hearing of it for the first time, the destruction of Planet Vegeta still impacted Vegeta enough to make him decide to avenge the Saiyans by killing Frieza.
• Intelligent: Vegeta is overall very intelligent, compared to Goku, who is usually quite scatterbrained and airheaded.
• Naturally Talented: Being a high-class Saiyan, Vegeta was born far more powerful than Goku, who had to train hard to get where he is by the time of the show.
• Arrogant/Jerkish: Due to his status as a Saiyan prince, Vegeta shows extreme pride for his race. This character trait continues even after his redemption, as well as being a jerk much of the time.
• Pursues a Big-End Goal: Vegeta’s main goal is to surpass Goku in strength.
• Irritable: Vegeta is very irritable and gets annoyed easily.
• Persistent: Vegeta is persistent in his ambition to become the strongest and surpass Goku.
• Believes in the Power of Individual Strength: Vegeta is rather prideful of his strength to the point of wanting to push beyond his limits without asking for help.
• Redemption Arc: While he did become a better person as Dragon Ball Z continued, Vegeta officially redeems himself to help defeat Majin Buu.
• Is A Serious Threat/Villain: Vegeta has committed multiple highly heinous crimes such as slaughtering planets full of people for profit, killing a village of Namekians, and killing random people to provoke Goku.
• Short-Tempered: Vegeta is notably wrathful and loses his temper often.
• Spiky Hair/Unnatural Hairstyle: Vegeta’s has spiky hair.
• Born into Privilege: As he is the prince of the Saiyans, it is clear that Vegeta hails from a wealthy and powerful family.
• Is a Blood Knight: Much like Goku, Vegeta enjoys participating in a good fight.
• Inferiority Superiority Complex: Due to his pride as the Prince of Saiyans, Vegeta consistently questions why Goku keeps getting stronger than him and how he can reach his level of power.
• Vengeful: Vegeta seeks revenge against Frieza for destroying Planet Vegeta and the Saiyans.
• Wears Blue: Vegeta has a blue color motif and is often seen in blue clothing.
• Is a Token Evil Teammate: Though he eventually redeems himself, Vegeta is consistently shown to be the most pragmatic and lethal member of the Z-Fighters.
• Calls Out Attacks: Vegeta calls out the following attacks:
  • GALICK GUN!!!
  • BIG BANG ATTACK!!!
  • FINAL FLASH!!!!
• Has Respect for a Shonen Hero: While he does have moments of abrasiveness toward him, Vegeta ultimately respects Goku as a rival, even admitting that he is the "mightiest Saiyan for now".
• Is a Tsundere: Vegeta usually has a cold and tough exterior but deep down he genuinely cares about many people, such as his family and his allies.

Trivia[]

• Vegeta is the icon of the Shonen Rivals Wiki. This is intentional, as his rival, Goku is the icon of the Shonen Heroes Wiki.
• Vegeta, along with his predecessor Piccolo, are overall considered to be the two codifiers of the Shonen Rival trope, with many shonen rivals taking influences from them, In fact, even Vegeta himself shares similarities with Piccolo.
