Jim Hawkins is the main protagonist of Treasure Planet. He was voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

- Courageous: Jim is willing to risk his life to save his friends.
- Energetic: Jim is rather adventurous and enjoys riding on his solar surfer.
- Stubborn: Jim is willing to go on an adventure to Treasure despite his mother Sarah's protest against it.
- Pursues a Big-End Goal: Ever since he was a toddler, Jim wants to prove that Treasure Planet exists and not just a legend. He receives this opportunity when he goes on an expedition to help his mother repair her restaurant business.
- Hard-Working: After being taken under John Silver's wing, Jim cleans thousands of dishes.
- Optimistic: Jim becomes much more optimistic after bonding with Silver.
- Possesses Plot Armor: Jim and the rest of the crew manages to escape from Treasure Planet's explosion.
- Has a Mentor: John Silver is Jim's mentor and father figure who taught him how to be a hard worker.
- Mischievous: Jim has a tendency to get in trouble with the law due to riding his solar surfer in restricted areas.
- Rebellious: Jim consistently disobeys his mother's expectations placed on him.
- Tragic Past: When Jim was younger, his father was negligent towards him to the point of leaving him and his mother on a expedition and never came back. The trauma of the abandonment left Jim with self-esteem issues and led to him becoming a delinquent.
- Is a Delinquent: Jim has been revealed to get arrested several times to the point of being placed in probation.
