Personality[]

Treasure Planet[]

Jim is a very adventurous, rebellious, and caring young lad. During the beginning of the film, he was a stereotypical, alienated teenager, constantly in trouble and "like a stranger" to his mother Sarah. In the DVD's Visual Commentary, the directors said that to emphasize Jim's "Bad Boy" reputation, they added the black jacket, and the shadow or "eye-mask" over his eyes. By the end of the movie, however, he no longer wears the jacket, and the eye-mask is gone. At first, Jim is stoic and guarded, but as time goes on, he begins to open up, and at the end of the movie, he becomes a much more open, confident and happier young man.

Jim is also very brave, selfless, strong-willed, independent, and loyal to his allies. He is friendly and willing to help strangers, especially if they are injured or lost; this is demonstrated when Jim, without hesitation, tended to Billy Bones, a wounded salamander-like alien pirate who was in need of help after a sudden crash-landing beside the Benbow Inn, Jim's home. According to his mother, Jim also had a proclivity to bring home stray pets, begging his mother to let him keep them, suggesting that Jim is kind and compassionate towards animals. Jim demonstrates great skill in mechanical engineering throughout the film. At the early age of 8, he built his first solar surfer which is later mirrored in his ability to construct a solar surfer on the spot using only the remnants of a broken ship's cannon. In a flashback during the "I'm Still Here" montage, we see Jim fitting together a toy ship, and he hotwired the late Captain Flint's vessel during his adventure to Treasure Planet at 15. He is pragmatic and logical, more so than people give him credit for.

Despite this, he has a reputation for being reckless. In his early years, it is suggested Jim not only had a habit of trespassing while flying his solar surfer, he also proceeded to violate his probation landing him one-step closer to Juvenile Hall by the start of the film. When first learning to fly a skiff alongside John Silver aboard the Legacy, Jim directs them into the tail of a passing comet, attempting to conduct the Cygnus Spin (a solar surfing move) in a craft not designed to handle the quick turns. As such, he very nearly flips both he and Silver out of the longboat, but, due to his impressive piloting, keeps them on course. In his later years as a Naval Officer, Jim demonstrates a fiery determination to proceed with missions at all costs, despite the danger posed to himself or his crew. This is exemplified in his decision to tail two ironclad vessels into a nebula despite the nebulous clouds violating their frigate's energy source and causing the crew to end up stranded within the stellar cradle.

With this reckless determination and quick-thinking, Jim has a bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude as portrayed when he insults Scroop aboard the Legacy, "Why? You got something to hide, Bright Eyes?" / "Yeah. Too bad my nose works just fine." or when dealing with the cops, "Six? Don't mention it." or even in his later years working alongside his first mate and best friend, Mister Onyx, who he refers to as a "stick-in-the-mud".

Despite this, Jim is fun-loving, jokey, sarcastic, mischievous, and charismatic. From his journal and the film alike, it is clear Jim values the playful nature of Silver's protoplasmic companion Morph. And, despite his initial distaste for the robot B.E.N.'s mischief, he is quick to invite the metal man along.

Ultimately, even with his tendency to be reckless and angsty, Jim has a heart of gold, understanding people's complex natures as seen with his relationship with Silver, and maintains a strong moral-compass when dealing with situations that put others in harm's way.

Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon[]

Five years after his journey to Treasure Planet, Jim Hawkins has graduated from the Royal Naval Academy and quickly rises from an ensign to commander of an Imperial fleet. As peaceful negotiations between the Terran Empire and the Procyon Expanse seem poised to end their galactic war, mysterious Ironclad ships begin wreaking havoc across Imperial space, leaving Jim to try to solve the mystery of their origins while battling pirates and the ghost of his old friend Silver along the way.

Trivia[]

  • Jim wears a black jacket throughout the film to symbolize his guarded nature. The jacket is replaced by a simple beige shirt in the scenes where Jim experiences confidence in himself (i.e. working alongside Silver aboard the Legacy / at the end of the film), suggesting he no longer feels the need to hide who he is. Later when he has been accepted to the Interstellar Academy, he wears a white uniform (often evocative of purity, light, goodness, and beginnings) representing his transformation from self-doubt to self-reliance.
  • Jim is a goofy-footed surfer, meaning he rides his solar surfer with his left leg at the rear and his right leg forward.
  • Jim's middle name, Pleiades, comes from a star cluster called "seven sisters".
  • According to notes in Treasure Planet: a Voyage of Discovery, Leland was nineteen and Sarah possibly seventeen when Jim came into existence. The addendum that he arrived "sooner than either parent planned" could imply that Jim was conceived earlier in Sarah and Leland's marriage than expected, or was the result of indiscretion, a love child, and the premise for the marriage.
  • Though it's clear that, in the wake of Leland's leaving, Jim blames himself, he also blames his mother for "driving Leland away."
  • Tom Cruise, Michael J. Fox, Anthony Michael Hall, and Jared Leto were all considered for the role of Jim Hawkins before Joesph Gordon-Levitt was cast. Fox had already voiced Milo Thatch in Atlantis: The Lost Empire the previous year.
  • Early concept art shows Jim with Afrocentric features (broad nose, full lips, etc.), leading to conjecture that the creators originally intended for Jim to be African-American. Other developments show him with a light complexion and curly hair that, in addition to the broad nose, offer the impression that he is biracial. It is unclear why Jim’s final design is white-passing, although it can be speculated that lateral pressure and the English origins of the tale may have conspired against divergence. Still, traces can be seen in things such as his complexion (emphasized in warmer frames but generally the dark filter of the film) and even his mother. A closer look at Sarah reveals she has a complexion somewhat browner than Jim’s and broader nostrils, inviting one to premise that between she and Leland, Sarah is the parent from whom Jim obtains his color. Though the absence of a face makes it difficult to determine, it has never been questioned if Leland is Caucasian. If all is to be believed, it's possible that Jim is biracial (or multiracial, depending on genealogy considering that humans in TP are on the cusp of extinction and at some point had to converge to survive). This is consistent with the post-Renaissance phase in which the movie was released – termed the Second Dark Era or Experimental Era – which saw a burst of ethnic diversity in the likes of The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Lilo & Stitch, and Brother Bear.
  • According to his mother, Jim built his first solar surfer at the age of 8.
  • Though he and several other characters from the film did not appear in the actual show (as Treasure Planet was released after the show's entire run), Jim had made several cameo appearances in various House of Mouse-themed online games.
  • When Morph stole Jim's boot, it was his right foot that was unshod, right up until the scene in which he leaps across the ship' deck at Morph, and then it's his left foot that's not wearing a boot. But when he seizes his boot, the bootless foot is his right foot once more. Maybe the deck–leaping scene was originally intended to be a mirror image of its final appearance.
  • In the cancelled Treasure Planet 2, Jim would have developed a rivalry with a fellow Royal Interstellar Academy student named Kate, who would later become the romantic interest.
