~ Vangelis to the ninja before having them executed. |
King Vangelis, also known as the Skull Sorcerer, is the main antagonist of Season 13: Master of the Mountain and a major antagonist in Season 15: Crystalized in the animated series, LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.
He was the corrupt King of the Ivory City of Shintaro who led a mining operation by enslaving the Geckles and Munce and forcing them to mine Vengestone. He is also the father of Princess Vania, who would later stop her father from using the Munce and Geckles and help the Ninja defeat him. He is also Cole's arch-nemesis.
He is voiced by Deven Mack.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Sent the Upply on a quest to acquire the Skull of Hazza D'ur to have it destroyed. When the Upply brought the Artifact back, he double-crossed them, banishing them to the Rock Bottom and taking the skull for himself. As a result, the Upply would remain trapped in the depths of the mountain for nearly a decade.
- Stole the Blades of Deliverance from the Geckles and the Munce to start a conflict between the two, making it easier to enslave them.
- Forced the Geckles and Munce to mine Vengestone, horribly punishing those who stopped.
- It's heavily implied that he killed many innocent people to keep his operation a secret, including his own guards, by tossing them down the same pit as the Upply to be eaten by the giant spiders within. This is supported by the number of skeletons seen in the spiders' webs, with at least six being visible.
- He sold the Vengestone mined by the Munce and Geckles on the black market, most prominently to Harumi, who used the vengestone she bought from him to build the Crystal Kings army. This makes him indirectly responsible for the Crystal King's invasion of Ninjago, with the army in question being used to corrupt many innocent people.
- Putting Cole and the rest of the Ninja to work for Vengestone.
- After Cole and Wu go to Vangelis to tell him about the Skull Sorcerer, he reveals his true colors by banishing both of them to Rock Bottom. When Vania went after them, Vangelis declared that if she helped them, she wouldn't be his daughter anymore. Vania still went after them, so Vangelis exclaimed that she made her choice. He then blames Vania's pet Chompy for throwing her into the pit and has him locked up.
- He resurrected Grief-Bringer, the dragon that terrorized the Geckles and Munce and ordered it to bring down the rocks above the passing, to make a way for his army to traverse the pool of lava.
- After being surrounded by Vangelis and his army, the Ninja agreed that they would surrender themselves to him if let the Munce and the Geckles go free. After the ninja surrendered, he imprisons them and plans to enslave them again anyway.
- He broke out of his prison in Shintaro and joined the Crystal King’s Council to get revenge on the Ninja, especially Cole, whom he blamed for his own actions.
- He subtly mocked Harumi for being merely the Crystal King’s servant, which was hypocritical and ungrateful since Harumi was the one who broke him out of prison.
- Attacks the monastery alongside Pythor, Aspheera, and the Mechanic to steal the weapons of Spinjitzu. Wu, Nya, Skylor, and P.I.X.A.L. are almost killed as a result.
- He helps summon the Overlord alongside Harumi and the rest of the council, allowing him terrorize Ninja once again.
- Takes part in the attack on Ninjago City, helping to corrupt many innocent people and attacking the Ninja in the final battle.
- He attacks the Newspaper warehouse with the rest of the Council, intending to kill everyone there and capture the Ninja.
- He tries to kill Cole as unjustifiable revenge for turning his people and Vania against him. He also does this against the Crystal King's orders, showing he has no true loyalty to him. He also refused to admit that this was his own fault, which Cole correctly calls him out on.
- While he claims to love his daughter, this love is shallow, as he disowns her for siding with the Ninja and attempts to beg her for undeserved mercy after his defeat.
- Even before his true colors were revealed, he was far from being a kind father, being incredibly controlling and mentally abusive to her to the point that she feared disobeying him. Not to mention that it is implied he tricked her as a child into believing that a Munce she had seen was her imagination.
- Him "justifying" his actions by claiming he was bringing glory and prosperity to Shintaro is nothing short of a lie. Not only did he lie to them about how he paid for their wealthy lives through Vengestone smuggling, but he also implicitly killed a few of his own guards to keep the truth hidden. In the end, he only cared for Shintaro as long as he was in control of it.
- His care for the Skull is not sincere as he doesn't mourn when it is destroyed (he was dismayed, but only because the skull is the source of his powers) and completely forgets about him in season 15.
- The Skull's influence does not make him a scapegoat or amoral in the slightest since he freely goes along with its advice and was already evil beforehand.
- While other villains have done worse, even attempting omnicide, Vangelis has far fewer resources than many of the more heinous villains to being limited to mostly an army in a remote mountain and magic, compared to others who have globally destructive powers or access to such beasts such as the Overlord, the Omega, the Great Devourer, Pythor, the Preeminent and Morro.
