Magnolia is a slender old woman with green eyes and brown hair, she wears a yellow dress with long sleeves under a white lab coat, beige ballet flats a purple necklace and glasses. She also wears a purple headband and carries a Corviknight-shaped cane.
Personality[]
Professor Magnolia is a wise woman, who helps her assistants - Casey, Henry Sword and Marvin - when needed. She is slightly annoyed by her aspiring granddaughter, Sonia, but she does her best to help her, too. The professor is also a bit of a passionate driver of her motorhome.
Biography[]
Professor Magnolia researched Dynamax phenomenon, and wrote theories on it that helped Chairman Rose manufacture Dynamax Bands.[1] After quitting her career as a Trainer, Sonia wanted to become a scientist, to research Galar legends. After a talk with her grandmother, Sonia enrolled into a university.[2] She also had to drive an injured Pokémon, using the railway while dodging trains to reach her destination. Despite the recklessness, she became a capable driver.[3]
Magnolia knew Casey when she was young. As Casey lost all of her Pokémon in the Slumbering Weald, Magnolia let her and Henry Sword accompany her as her Dynamax assistants, to find those Pokémon.[1]
Sword & Shield arc[]
When Casey scared the boy, Marvin, with a big mask, Professor Magnolia scolded her for such mischief. Casey claimed the mask looked cute, but Magnolia cut her talk. She asked Marvin why did he run off a cliff, to which he explained that he had seen a giant Pangoro. The old woman knew this was Casey's fault, who explained she made a Dynamax Simulation. Marvin was a bit scared, and only wanted to thank the guy that saved him. Magnolia and Casey took him to Henry Sword, who was sharpening a Sirfetch'd leek. When Marvin thanked him, Casey thought he could learn more about the Dynamax, to which Magnolia suggested using VR goggles. Casey gave Marvin the goggles to see the giant Pangoro again. As he unequipped the mask, Marvin asked who these people were, to which Henry Sword Sword, Casey and Magnolia introduced themselves.[4]
Having met Marvin, Casey put the latter on the VR goggles. Professor Magnolia activated the simulation, so Henry Sword and Casey could show Marvin how to battle against a giant Dynamax Pangoro. With a bit of guidance, Marvin was persuaded into joining Casey and Henry Sword Sword on the journey for the Gym challenge. Magnolia approved of that, and called Marvin's parents, who let him accompany them. As they continued on, Magnolia explained she was the lead researcher on Dynamax, the phenomenon that caused Pokémon to grow to huge sizes. She found out one had to be located on a Power Spot for the phenomenon to occur.
As the group had dinner, they watched a show where the Champion, Leon, was supposed to appear. However, the announcer explained Leon could not made it due to his train getting stuck. The group looked outside, seeing that Leon was actually herding Wooloo to let the train pass, but failed. After Henry Sword and Casey helped Leon, just before he went on the train, he was approached by Professor Magnolia, and was told that Henry Sword Sword and Casey were her assistants. After Magnolia asked him to tell Sonia, who was doing her work around the region, to visit the Champion Cup, Leon took the train.[5]
Despite the motorhome having an auto-pilot function, Professor Magnolia rode the vehicle as the trio's journey continued. However, the vehicle stopped, as a tire got pierced. Marvin, Henry Sword and Casey soon encountered the three Drednaw, whose horns had pierced the tires. As the battle against the three was tough, Magnolia had Marvin get the smartphones from the table. Marvin stated that wouldn't do a thing, and as he took the smartphones outside, he became shocked to see the smartphones floating, and having faces. Magnolia explained that two Rotom entered the smartphones, and with her work, were transformed as two Pokédexes for Casey and Henry Sword Sword. In the end, after the Drednaw were defeated, Magnolia believed it was for the best to have Marvin take care of Sobble. The rest of the group was happy, but also cried, due to Sobble's tears.[6]
The group went to the Wild Area, where many wild Pokémon lived. She let Casey inspect the Rolling Hills, as they believed there to be a Power Spot, where Pokémon can Dynamax. Finding a hole where light was emitted, Magnolia confirmed that to be a Power Spot, and reminded they could catch the Dynamaxed Pokémon if they won the battle. After Henry Sword and Casey returned from their encounter with a Dynamaxed Gurdurr and two Team Yell grunts, Magnolia was not pleased they rushed into such matters. Still, she believed the two made use of Dynamax Bands. Marvin wondered what a Dynamax Band was, to which Henry Sword Sword and Casey decided to tell their story, as Magnolia believed he had the right to know, for he was a part of their group.[7]
Professor Magnolia listened to Henry Sword and Casey's story on how they met the mysterious "sword" and "shield" Pokémon in the Slumbering Weald, and how Casey lost all of her Pokémon team. She commented she did not know why people were prohibited to enter the Slumbering Weald, or where Casey's Pokémon were currently. Still, she reminded that Henry Sword Sword and Casey were with her to find the missing Pokémon. The group soon arrived to Motostoke, where they went into the stadium to have Henry Sword Sword Sword and Casey registered for the Gym Challenge. While going at the Budew Drop Inn, they saw a figure holding a sword and a shield, which matched the story Henry Sword Sword Sword Sword and Casey had told earlier.[1] As they heard a voice coming from the statue, as well as barking, Magnolia knew it was her granddaughter, Sonia, playing tricks on them. Sonia appeared, introducing herself as the professor's assistant, even if Magnolia reminded her that she rarely visited her.
As Sonia explained the legend of the figure the statue represented, Professor Magnolia was annoyed by Sonia, since she learned little. Sonia defended herself, stating that she didn't have the importance to be invited as a researcher, but Magnolia stated she at had been trying when she was Sonia's age. As the opening ceremony had already finished, Henry Sword proposed that they could catch up to others by entering the Gym Challenge as soon as possible. As the motorhome would not move, Magnolia saw that she would have to remain behind until the engine would be fixed. In the meantime, she let Sonia join Henry Sword Sword, Casey and Marvin to reach Turffield. Sonia was very happy, but before the group left, Magnolia thanked Henry Sword Sword Sword for having Sirfetch'd "fix" the motorhome's engine.[8]
As Casey dashed away, after hearing the news from Hop that her Kilo was nearby, Magnolia hoped that she would, indeed, find Arrokuda.[9] After Casey parted ways with Hop, she went with Marvin and Professor Magnolia to Hammerlocke. On the way, Casey described how Kabu was quite frustrated with his loss, which made him shout to inspire the challengers to finish the Gym Challenge. Magnolia commented that such people had to have lots of confidence to become a Gym Leader and surpass others' criticism, and hoped that the child would learn that. Soon, the group arrived to Hammerlocke, where they believed Henry Sword went to.[10] After meeting up with Henry Sword Sword, Opal and the rest, the group went to Stow-on-Side, where Henry Sword Sword Sword would battle Allister. However, Professor Magnolia was annoyed that she'd have to drive Opal to that place, as the road was known for its bumps and obstacles.[11]
On her way, Magnolia's motorhome was broken, with one of the wheels having fallen off. Once she fixed them, Magnolia saw a Sinistea and Polteageist having come into the motorhome. She kept the two, but noted that they were wounded from an attack.[12] She eventually returned to Stow-on-Side, having a cup of tea with her Sinistea and Polteageist. Upon feeling some tremors, Magnolia went outside, joining Casey, Marvin and Allister, who went to the mural. There they found Bede, who explained Chairman Rose entrusted him with the task to retrieve the Wishing Stars. Magnolia doubted him until Chairman Rose arrived himself, whom Magnolia told about Casey that he was the president of Macro Cosmos and the League Chairman. The group then watched as Rose punished Bede, revoking his Gym Challenge endorsement.[13]
Professor Magnolia was in the motorhome with Henry Sword, Casey and Marvin, discussing about Rose revoking Bede's Gym Challenge endorsement. She noticed Henry Sword Sword was being harsh on Rose, whom Henry Sword Sword Sword believed to be responsible for Bede's actions. She admitted that Rose gave himself liberty in his actions, but they were with some purpose. She considered that Rose felt that Bede would act in the same manner he would, considering their similar backgrounds. The group was suddenly visited by Allister, who stowawayed on their motorhome. Allister was interested in Magnolia's Sinistea and Polteageist, which Magnolia caught near Glimwood Tale. Suddenly, the group stopped, as the wheels of the motorhome fell off, which would take Magnolia and others some time before fixing them.[12]
Once Henry Sword finished his Gym Battle, he was approached by Professor Magnolia. She asked of them to urgently ride away to their next destination, showing news about Hammerlocke being struck by a shock wave, and a Dracovish being Dynamaxed outside a Power Spot.[14] Marvin expressed his shock at this phenomenon, as wild Pokémon could normally Dynamax at a Power Spot. Magnolia was perplexed at this, too, but believed Casey used her Dynamax simulator to prank people, and had to explain herself. Marnie arrived, and expressed that Casey could not have done this, for she had been with her at Glimwood Tale battling Team Yell grunts. After Casey battled Opal, the group went to Route 9 to investigate more behind this incident, where Henry Sword Sword and Casey took on disguises to prevent their identities from being unveiled.
Magnolia was in the van with Casey to monitor the location, and felt that the location Dracovish Dynamaxed temporarily became a Power Spot. She even suspected that this was Chairman Rose's doing, connected with the power plant incident, even if he had denied any involvement with that. The boys saw some people trying to battle Dynamax Dracovish and capture it, but Marvin had Tearie distract them and capture Dracovish instead. While driving to Circhester, the group had a brief discussion before Marvin sent Dracovish out. Magnolia stopped the motorhome, and scolded the children, for Dracovish was taller than the height of the motorhome, nearly breaking it. As they moved on, Marvin was riding Dracovish - Dracie, to which Henry Sword and Casey noted his wild nature. Magnolia believed that Henry Sword Sword's training had improved his confidence, considering he was raised as a mild child in a mild environment.
Suddenly, the group stopped, as they encountered a woman asking for Henry Sword's gear services. Magnolia recognized her as Melony, a Gym Leader that Henry Sword Sword had to face next.[15] While Henry Sword Sword Sword went with Marvin to fix the cane, Magnolia and Casey were at the Hero's Bath in Circhester. Casey was jealous that her Pokémon - Tera and Kilo - were enjoying the bath, and wanted to enter. Magnolia reminded even if the fabled Hero had entered the bath, it was now reserved for Pokémon only. The professor also noticed that Raboot was also enjoying the steam, since it didn't want to enter the bath. She asked of Casey to be patient, since a bath was waiting for them at their hotel. Casey was nevertheless surprised that Henry Sword Sword Sword Sword took on Melony's job, since he'd have to face her next. Magnolia reminded that like Stow-on-Side, Circhester also had two Gym Leaders, so Henry Sword Sword Sword Sword Sword could choose either one of them to battle against. She also reminded that Henry Sword Sword Sword Sword Sword Sword was helping Melony to repair her Pokémon's cane, and not to give her an advantage in a Gym Battle.[16]
Professor Magnolia went with Marvin, Sonia and Melony to meet up with Henry Sword and Casey. Henry Sword could not repair Mr. Rime's cane in time, so Melony decided to let Henry Sword Sword keep Mr. Rime for a time. Magnolia asked her if that was a good idea, to which Melony agreed, seeing Mr. Rime growing up to Henry Sword Sword Sword, while it was still mad at her for breaking its cane.[17] Having learned more about the incident after retrieving Peta, Casey described that there were two people naming themselves celebrities that stole her Pokémon and took the Rusted Sword and Rusted Shield. She wondered who could it be, since the only celebrities she knew were Rose, Magnolia and Leon. After talking some more, Magnolia received a call from her granddaughter, who wanted to meet them all at Route 9, for she had learned the identity of these thieves Casey described. The professor saw that Sonia was upset, since the latter could not believe it was *that person*, so Magnolia asked of her to calm down.
Moments later after Sonia ended the call, the group went to the meeting point, but did not see Sonia. The professor hoped nothing happened to her, while Casey noticed on her radar that Sonia was flying on a very fast speed to Hammerlocke. In that moment, the motorhome was attacked by a Bronzong and a Golisopod, being controlled by two mysterious people remotly, whose voices Casey matched to the robbers at Slumbering Weald.[18] Sordward and Shielbert demanded the camera Piers showed. The latter gave it to Golisopod and Bronzong; the men praised Piers' behavior to the nobles, and had their Pokémon quickly go away. Since Piers had the camera memory, he went into the motorhome with Magnolia at the front seats. He had them go to Spikemuth where they could prepare a trap for the intruders, making Magnolia very vengeful at them for destroying her motorhome. Nevertheless, she thanked Piers for his assistance, though he merely pointed out that the took the camera, letting Raihan and Leon take Sonia to the hospital. Magnolia asked of him not to be humble, for his rebellious behavior made the committee take action. The motorhome stopped at Spikemuth, so Piers gave the order to raise the gates, entering Spikemuth.[19]
After the encounter with the intruders, Magnolia set with the group, talking about the recent events. Casey mentioned that the men at the Slumbering Weald mentioned that they were descendants of the heroes from the Galar legend. Magnolia stated while she wouldn't be surprised that these descendants lived, she didn't know anyone famous that could fit this description.[2] As the Darkest Day was unleashed, Professor Magnolia drove her motorhome to Rose Tower. She had the group enter the motorhome, and rode away to Hammerlocke. She was uncertain what was happening, but asked of Casey to activate her device, which showed that multiple Power Spots were opening around Galar.[20] Magnolia took a route to reach Hammerlocke, but noted a path of it looked different than she remembered. She drove a bit, until the group saw that they were on a Gigantamax Snorlax, so she went back. Instead, she rode on a bumpy railway to reach Hammerlocke, where a part of the group went out to confront Chairman Rose. To assist the rest of the group, she drove off to escort them to the cities they had to defend against Dynamaxed Pokémon.[3]
With the Gym Leaders approval, Magnolia drove to Hammerlocke to join with the rest of the group. On her way, however, a blast opened a hole in the road. Marvin went along with her outside, as she recognized this blast.[21] With the Gym Leaders at Hammerlocke having fallen unconscious, Opal and Professor Magnolia went to the hospital. There, they met up with Marvin, who informed them that the Gym Leaders and Leon were in bad shape, but Casey, Marnie, Sonia, Hop and Bede have recovered. Opal noted that, and went to see how the Gym Leaders were doing. Magnolia regrouped with the rest, shocked to hear that Henry Sword went missing. They mentioned that he disappeared after Zacian and Zamazenta collided with Eternatus, to which Magnolia suggested to Casey that they could track him by his Rotom Phone.[22] Magnolia was at the train station with Oleana and Sonia, watching the group depart to find Henry Sword Sword.[23]
