Water is an element in Ninjago that comes from the Source Dragon of Motion.[1] It was formerly used by Maya before being passed down to her daughter and current user, Nya. This element is associated with the colors aqua, teal, and light blue and corresponds with the Elemental Water Dragon.
Nya has control over the Water and when she uses it in the form of a vortex (via her True Potential), it allows her to have control over the Water (rains, tidal waves, etc.). This power can also be used to summon sea creatures.
Users' abilities[]
- Hydrokinesis/Aquakinesis - The user can manipulate and generate Water, including water inside objects (like water bottles), and can use this ability underwater as well. The user can also encapsulate and/or surround an object or person moving the Water, and possibly regenerate/heal others through water. In "The Belly of the Beast," Cole said that Nya might not be able to draw Water from the air due to the low humidity of the Desert of Doom. This confirms that users of this element can only generate Water when there is humidity in the atmosphere.
- Hydrokinetic Entrapment - The user can use Water to trap ghosts in it since it's the only thing known to stop ghosts, as explained by Master Wu during Nya's water training in "Stiix and Stones."
- Hydro-Flyrogenesis - The user can make a shield of Water to protect themselves (which works dramatically against ghosts).
- Hyetokinesis - The user can create, generate, and manipulate rain, allowing them to control its intensity and water, even in a drought. Nya used this to summon rain in "The Temple on Haunted Hill" despite Ronin saying it was a dry season.
- Hydro-Telekinesis - The user can move, manipulate, and otherwise interact with matter using water.
- Hydrokinetic Attacks - The user can attack using Water.
- Hydrokinetic Blasts - The user can release Water over a specific target area, causing great damage and/or delivering great shock waves of pure force.
- Hydrokinetic Beam Emission - The user can fire beams of water.
- Hydrokinetic Ball Projection - The user is able to project a sphere of Water that they are able to hold in the air.
- Hydrokinetic Breath - The user can expel water from their mouth.
- Water Cutting - The user can project water in a way that allows them to cut through objects.
- Water Bolt Projection - The user can create and project bolts of water and control the intensity/power of their projectiles.
- Water Wave Emission - Users can release waves, spirals, rings, pulse, blasts, balls, and bursts of water and use them to damage, push, bind and/or paralyze people.
- Hydrokinetic Blasts - The user can release Water over a specific target area, causing great damage and/or delivering great shock waves of pure force.
- Hydrokinetic Flight - The user is able to fly or propel themselves up using Water.[2]
- Water Form Manipulation - With enough training, the user can likely manipulate water in every form possible.
- Hydro-Cryokinesis - Users are able to control a little bit of Ice, and still have Water. However, this requires a great amount of focus, has a lot of limits, and must be in the right condition zone.
- Hydrokinetic Surfing - The user can possibly surf on water for transportation.
- Pressurized Water Generation - Some users can generate pressurized water.
- Hydro-Electrokinesis - The user can generate and manipulate water that carries an electric current at all times or both water and electricity simultaneously.
- Water/Moisture Absorption - The user can possibly absorb water and moisture.
- Hydrokinetic Constructs - The user is able to turn Water into tools, objects, weapons, and other items (blades, whips, cushions, etc).
- Water Platform Creation - Users can create platforms, stairs, etc. of varying permanence from water that levitate or fly unassisted. Nya used this to move forward when there is no solid ground to stand on.[3]
- Exorcism - A ghost's main weakness is water, and presumably any other liquid, which will send ghosts back to the Cursed Realm if distributed in a large enough quantity. However, due to the Cursed Realm's destruction, all ghosts would be sent to the Departed Realm.
- Aquatic Life Manipulation - With enough concentration, the user can control marine life. Nya used this to summon whales to take her and the rest of her friends back to Ninjago.
- Aquatic Telepathy - The user can possibly communicate with aquatic animals mentally, such as whales, and persuade them to do their bidding.
- Hydrokinetic Entrapment - The user can use Water to trap ghosts in it since it's the only thing known to stop ghosts, as explained by Master Wu during Nya's water training in "Stiix and Stones."
- Dragon Creation - The user can create a Water Dragon.
Via the users' True Potential[]
- Tidal Wave Generation - Allows the user to create a tidal wave by pushing or pulling a great amount of water.
- Water Aura - The user is able to be surrounded by Water for offense or defense.
- Waterspout Generation - The user can generate spirals/vortices composed of water. The vortex can be projected as a long ranged attack or as a tornado of water for both offensive and/or defensive purposes.
- Whirlpool Creation - The user can generate a whirlpool, swirling bodies of Water that can be used to attack or trap enemies.
Higher-level powers[]
- Merging with the Endless Sea - As a last resort, the user can use their Water elemental powers to become one with the Endless Sea. For the user to fuse with the ocean, they must enter the Endless Sea, surrounding themselves in a whirlpool and opening themselves to the full power of the Endless Sea before having water enter their body to finally merge with it. It was originally thought that once the user is merged with the sea, they can't revert back to their original form,[4] but it was discovered by Nya that they can turn back to normal by having their Elemental Powers drained. The process of draining the user's powers is difficult as they are extremely powerful due to their connection with the Endless Sea.
- Thalassokinesis - Once achieved, the user has complete control over the ocean, as shown when Nya drained all the water out of Ninjago City after the conflict with Wojira.
- Hydrophysiology - Once merged with the ocean, the user's body would transform into water.
- Avatar Creation - In addition, once merged, the user can create avatars made of Water to embody their consciousness at will. The avatars can still be destroyed, such as electrocution, however, the user can simply create a new avatar from water, as they are the ocean itself. The user can still make avatars even if they are in the Endless Sea, but for an indefinite period of time because they are surrounded by water. For example, when Nya was merged with the ocean, she took the shape of a dragon and sometimes an appearance similar to her human form when she became aware of who she was.
- Reformation - The user can reform their avatar with water whenever it gets destroyed.
- Self-Liquefaction - It is possible for the user to freely liquify their water avatar.
- Hydrokinetic Shapeshifting - The user can transform/reshape their water form into a different form or appearance. Nya used this to shapeshift into a massive water dragon to combat Wojira. She did this again at some point before she saved a sailor from drowning and stayed in this shape until she remembered who she is.
- Megethoskinesis - The user can change the size of their avatar. In flashbacks, Nyad was able to increase the size of her water avatar to pry Wojira's amulets off of her forehead.
- Incorporeality - The user's water form lacks a physical body, causing anything to pass right through them.
- Elasticity - When the user is turned to water, they appear to be able to slightly stretch and deform their body, as seen while Nya was battling Kalmaar on Wojira. It can also possibly allow them to stretch their limbs (i.e. arms and neck).
- Underwater Breathing/Water Adaptation - As the embodiment of the ocean, the user can possibly breathe underwater and adapt to aquatic environments.
- Speed/Enhanced Swimming - The user has the ability to swim in great speed and distances in a short period of time.
- Hydroportation - The user can teleport from the ocean to another place through water if there is enough of it.
- Flight - The user can fly from place to place. Nya used this to dodge Kalmaar's attacks with ease and go to the lighthouse.
- Immortality - After merging, the user becomes immortal and they can't age or be killed. Nyad still exists after thousands of years, describing this as becoming "eternal and endless".
- Bioluminescence - The user is able to produce a bright blue glow, specifically underwater.
- Fury of the Storm - When the user associates Water with Wind or Lightning and Quake, they can use both the Endless Sea and violent storms to create a destructive storm surge. According to Glutinous, it's also known as the full power of Wave and Storm.[5] In "The Calm Before the Storm," Wojira used the water from the Endless Sea to flood the streets of Ninjago City to destroy it. She can also bring forth large amounts of water from the ocean to flood the entire streets of Ninjago, pushing with strong currents in "Assault on Ninjago City".
- Wave - Consisting of the Elemental Powers of Wind, Quake, and Water, the user of Wave can control the waves from the Endless Sea and also manipulate the very water from that ocean. This ranges from generating small tidal waves to tsunamis that can flood many islands by raising the sea levels or causing powerful floods. The user can also generate strong winds on a large scale with varying intensities.
Weaknesses[]
- Evaporation and reliance on humidity - Conjuring Water in a hot environment, such as near lava, causes it to evaporate. The user also requires humidity in the air in order to use their power.[6]
- Freezing - Cold enough temperatures turn Water into Ice, making it nearly impossible for Masters of Water to control. Nya was able to overcome this by learning how to control Ice by a limited amount with the help of Sorla.
- Limited supply (formerly) - As Nya puts it, the user needs water in order to use their powers. They can't use their powers if there isn't any or if the water is frozen. However, in Dragons Rising, Nya is seen summoning water out of her bare hands at any time and without any limits, implying that this weakness is no longer an issue.
- Destabilizing Water Avatars - After merging with the Endless Sea, the user can't maintain their water avatars while on land for very long. They will have a hard time to maintain their shape and their avatars will start to ripple and fall apart into a puddle if they stay out of the Endless Sea for an extended period of time.
- Memory Loss - After a certain period of time merged with the Endless Sea, the user will begin identifying as the ocean instead of themselves, causing them to become lost to the Endless Sea forever. However, they can regain their memories of who they are.
Symbol[]
Seen on the torso of Nya's ninja suit, the symbol for water appears to be the head and wings of a phoenix, with the wings resembling waves of water.
The symbol of Water shown in the Tournament of the Sources represents a wave.

Trivia[]
- Chen was able to complete his spell without the use of water because it's not an element listed in the book. This is also the same for Wind and Time.[7]
- It is worth noting that in "A Big Splash," Water and Wind were revealed to be pre-existing powers belonging to Wojira.
- Kai and Zane can create water by combining their elemental powers.[2][8]
- It is the one of the only elements that can potentially harm/destroy ghosts. The other three are Fire, Lightning, and Energy.[2][9]
- Water is the elemental power whose user has been shown to control the most physical matter at once, that being the tidal wave controlled by Nya in "Curseworld, Part II."
- The symbol of Water, at least for Nya, is a phoenix. Ironically, phoenixes are generally associated with fire, which is often considered to be the opposite of water.
- This is the case because Nya had this symbol before she learned of her powers and became the Water Ninja.
- Tommy Andreasen clarified that an Elemental Master of Water cannot breathe underwater.[10] This was confirmed in "The Storm Amulet."
- An Elemental Master of Water cannot manipulate any other type of liquid.[11] However, the user can still control "impure" water.[12]
- Out-of-universe, this is because "Ninjago is not scientifically accurate" and because the ability to control blood would make Nya's powers extremely deadly.[13][14]
- Despite Andreasen's statement implying that Nya couldn't control the water in people's bodies, Nya was able to remove the seawater Jay inhaled in Seabound.
- However, this may be because she had merged with the sea, giving her higher-level powers.
- In the activity book, The Tournament of Elements, there is an Elemental Master of Water called Lar who participated in the Tournament of Elements. The character was confirmed to be non-canon,[15] and Way of the Departed later revealed that the events of The Tournament of Elements are just a fake story created by Lar.
- Early concepts for Masters of Water include "Rayne", a scrapped Tournament of Elements character,[16] and possibly "Edward", the ninja seen on the first spinner pack layout (possibly an earlier version of Jay), who had a wave symbol on his card.[17]
- Explaining why Nya sometimes generates water and sometimes draws if from her surroundings, Tommy Andreasen gave an analogy, saying, "I can run, but I don’t always run to get to a place because it takes more effort and I am not always in a hurry."[18]
- As for why Nya's powers work this way compared to the other ninja, Tommy Andreasen stated, "We do stuff to make each ninja unique."[19]
- Water has the potential to be one of the most powerful secondary elements, as it grants the user the ability to merge with the Endless Sea at will, gaining complete control over it. However, this form is considered a sacrifice, as the user will permanently lose themselves to the Endless Sea.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, Nya cannot produce hot water on her own.[20]
- This is shown in "Wasted True Potential", where Nya asks Kai to use his Fire to increase the water temperature.
- In Seabound, Maya and Nya discuss the "Water stance", which appears to be one of four confirmed forms of Waterbending from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
- In a promotional GIF (as seen on the right), Maya teaches Nya another of the four.[21]
- When asked if the Master of Water can control amphibious creatures, other than whales, Tommy Andreasen replied, 'If only there was a tv-series which could potentially answer that…'[22]
- Actually Nya proved it in "Riddle of the Sphinx" when she attracted the attention of fishes before Whales and later in "Distress Calls" when she made a connection with other fishes and was able to give them a message to take to the King Benthomaar.
- Water is one of two elements to be shown having two masters at the same time, the other being Time. In this case, it's because Nyad merged with the Endless Sea while others had inherited the ability to control Water during this.
- "The Call of Home" reveals that two beings can simultaneously be one with the Endless Sea while also retaining individuality.
- According to Tommy Andreasen, the water which the Elemental Master of Water shoots from their hands is probably cold and not saline.[23]
- Water (and possibly Wind) is the Element that has had the most Elemental Masters, as the first Master of Water, Nyad had existed before the creation of Ninjago.
