Joe Wells was a 23rd century Human man. He served in Starfleet as a crewman in the sciences division aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the 2260s under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.

History[]

In 2265, a temporal disruption brought the Enterprise near the planet Zeltok in the year 1465. Joe Wells joined a survey expedition aboard the Galileo along with James T. Kirk, Spock and crewman Sankey.

While exploring the ruins of an ancient Zeltok city a gigantic Zeltok ants appeared and grabbed Wells with one of its claws. Kirk stunned the ant unconscious, and it dropped Wells, but he was only shaken.

The shuttle later landed inside a fortress made by Zeltok gorillas and met Karn, a humanoid Zeltok. When a horde of the ants began a final assault on the fortress to slaughter everyone within, Kirk begged Karn to leave aboard the shuttle, but the Zeltok preferred to die with his gorilla friends. Karn grabbed Wells' phaser and forced the landing party to depart.

A second temporal disruption returned the Enterprise to 2265 and erased the crew's memories of having visited Zeltok. However, Wells reported to Spock that his phaser has inexplicably gone missing, and a thorough search of the ship revealed no trace of it, leaving the crew with a minor mystery.
