H. Osterman was a 23rd century Human individual who was an officer cadet in Starfleet Academy during the 23rd century. He was among the top students of his class.

Around 2245, he was killed and replaced by Klingon agents who were hoping to steal the prototype Federation starship NX-0002, for a short shakedown cruise under the command of Admiral Charles Rasmussen. A Klingon who had been altered to resemble him left Earth aboard the vessel and murdered many of the ship's crew of trainees and cadets. (TOS - Crew comic: "Shakedown")

All of the cadets of "Shakedown" wore standard duty uniforms with officer's rank insignia and no corresponding assignment patch.
