Thelic

Thelic,^[1][2] or Thallic was a language seemingly originated in Ancient Atlantean, then used by the Hyborian Age's Cimmerians (descendants of the Atlanteans) and by peoples of the Savage Land's Pangea, an outpost of the Atlantean empire that survived annihilation during the Great Cataclysm.

History and users

Pre-Cataclysmic Age

Given its similarity, Thallic was seemingly originated from Ancient Atlantean,^[3] the language used by pre-Cataclysmic Atlantis.

The pirate Captain Lahtentz used Thelic for his log.^[1][2]

Given Thelic was known among the Cimmerians and the Pangeans, the Ancient Atlantean/Thelic separation presumably occurred before the Great Cataclysm (and before Pangea's colonization). In this case, it is unclear if the Cimmerian Thelic and the Pangean Thelic is alike. It is also possible that there are independant strain of "Thelic", and Conan could also have mistaken Ancient Atlantean for Thelic.

Hyborian Age

During the Hyborian Age, Conan of Cimmeria knew Thelic,^[2] as maybe did his grandmother (see notes).

Modern Age

In the Modern Age, Savage Land's Pangea's uppers classes,^[3] such as Queen Leanne of Zarhan who lived in the city of Lemura,^[1] by the Aerians, as well as by some inhabitants of the Savage Land proper, including both Shanna the She-Devil^[3] and Ka-Zar spoke Thallic/Thelic.^[1][3]

Thelic/Thallic wasn't listed among the major languages of the Savage Land.^[4]

Notes

• Thelic was created by Bruce Jones in "A New Dawn... a New World!", in Ka-Zar the Savage Vol 1 1 (April, 1981). The next month, he also mentioned it in the story "The Children of Rhan", in Savage Sword of Conan #64 (May, 1981).
  • Reading a log, Conan states "It is Thelic, by grandmother's tongue!". It might be a typo, turning the statement that Conan's grandmother had Thelic for native language into a random invocation involving her.
• It was named "Thallic" in the "Through the Grapevine" fans' letters page's answer to Daniel Tobias in Ka-Zar the Savage #13 (April, 1982).
