Synopsis
Datation[]
The post-Hyborian cataclysm occurred in 8,000 BC.[1][3][4]
Aftermaths[]
The cataclysm leveled much of Earth's society and further reshaped its land masses:[1]
- Great portions of the western coast including Vanaheim and Pictland sank, while the mountains of western Cimmeria became what would later be called the British Isles.
- The Stygian Continent broke from the rest of the world-continent of Hyboria, flooding Argos, western Koth, and western Shem while forming the Mediterranean Sea.[2]
- It virtually erased evidence of the existence of society developed from Atlantean refugees from the Great Cataclysm, who scattered to surviving islands: Antillia, Avalon, Mayapan, Opar, Ptahuacan, Ruta, and Zothique.[3]
The territory around the Inland Sea, which later became known as the Caspian Sea, remained largely unaffected.[2]
Afterward, champions and menaces emerged throughout the world.[1]Notes
- Though mentions of the Cataclysm occuring 10,000 years ago could fit the Post-Hyborian Cataclysm, they are likely to be an error of datation.
- Such cases include the story "The Kingdom Beneath the Sea" (Namora #1) , which depicts the sinking of the island of Mu as occurring ten thousand years ago. This can be ruled as an error, given the Great Cataclysm's profile in Blockbusters of the Marvel Universe #1 lists the sinking of Mu in Namora #1 as the earliest key chronicle referenced listed in its infobox.[5]
